Off the back of his lacklustre unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) victory over former undisputed featherweight champion, Jose Aldo at UFC 278 on Saturday, Georgian grappling ace, Merab Dvalishvili has claimed the Brazilian confirmed to him that he would be retiring from professional mixed martial arts.

Dvalishvili, who turned in his seventh successive victory with his forgettable unanimous judging win over Manaus favorite, Aldo, entered the weekend’s main card matchup with the Brazilian as the #6 ranked contender at bantamweight.

Failing to secure any sort of takedowns against Aldo from over 12 attempts despite predicting at least three successful shots, Dvalishvili forced a rather gunshy Aldo to fight off the fence for the majority of their 15 minute matchup, en route to a unanimous decision win.

The loss snapped an impressive run of three consecutive wins for the #3 rated challenger, Aldo since December 2019 – after he defeated the trio of Marlon Vera, Pedro Munhoz, and at the end of last year, turned in an impressive unanimous decision win over Rob Font.

Merab Dvalishvili reveals Jose Aldo informed him would be retiring after UFC 278

Noting his intentions to defeat Dvalishvili and then challenge either Aljamain Sterling or T.J. Dillashaw for bantamweight gold in his native Brazil at UFC 283 in January before retiring – Jose Aldo, according to Dvalishvili, appears to have already decided to hang up his gloves following their Salt Lake City matchup last weekend.

“He (Jose Aldo) told me actually, when he was down (on the canvas after the fight), and then I go to shake his hand and thank him so much for the fight,” Merab Dvalishvili told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “And I go to respect him and he was down. And I try to help him, and he told me, he says, ‘This means this is my last fight – it was my last run to title.’ And then he says, ‘I guess I’m done.’”

Yet to address a potential retirement, Aldo a former undisputed UFC and WEC featherweight champion, released a statement following his disappointing loss to Dvalishvili on his official Instagram account.

“We are the story we write,” Jose Aldo posted. “Take care of very detail of your path, every step, every step or curve. Every difficulty and every achievement. He’s a better planner than you. You may even doubt him, but he will always believe in you. He put you in this world to shine. To be better every day. To smile and make people around you smile. What matters is what makes your heartbeat. Don’t accept a less amazing life than you deserve. Thank you for all the affection I receive along my walk, this is priceless. Who will be in the trenches by your side? – Does it matter? – More than the war itself.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov, Kamaru Usman

Khabib Nurmagomedov is doubtful that Kamaru Usman can recover from the vicious knockout he suffered at UFC 278.

This past Saturday, former UFC welterweight champion Usman took on Leon Edwards in the main event of the night. Usman had been a dominant champion going into the bout undefeated in the promotion and on the verge of equalizing MMA legend Anderson Silva‘s record for the longest win streak.

Edwards got off to a solid start in the opening round but could not carry the same momentum in any of the following rounds of the bout. Although Usman was on his way to another record-breaking win on the judges’ scorecards, a kick to the head from Edwards with just 56 seconds left on the clock would dethrone him.

Khabib Nurmagomedov wonders if Kamaru Usman can recover from the KO loss at UFC 278

UFC president Dana White indicated a trilogy outing between the pair would be next. Usman was inches away from etching his name into the history books and a title rematch with Edwards would give him the chance to avenge his greatest defeat.

Having been knocked out for the first time in his pro career, and that too with a vicious head kick that had him out cold on the canvas, there is a lot Usman would need to overcome both mentally and physically.

Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov believes that such a hard loss can change the trajectory of any fighter’s career. Following the UFC 278 headliner, Khabib shared his thoughts on one of the biggest upsets in the sport:

“(In) a second, it all went wrong, put his hand in the wrong place; your lights could go out if the proper defense is not in place,” Khabib said. “You can wake up in the locker room and it’s over.”

While Khabib does see Usman beating Edwards, he wants to see how “The Nigerian Nightmare” would handle the low moment.

“I’m aware that the trilogy is already in the works. I believe he can beat Leon Edwards. But after such a knockout, a lot of people don’t recover,” Khabib noted. “It will be interesting to see. But I would love to see the trilogy. They are 1-1.” (h/t Mr. MMA Shorts).

Joe Rogan labels Leon Edwards’ high kick KO of Kamaru Usman as the greatest in MMA history

UFC coior commentator, Joe Rogan has christened UFC 278 headliner, Leon Edwards’ breathtaking fifth round rallying high kick KO of welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman as the greatest in the sport’s history – as the former clinches Octagon gold from the jaws of defeat.

Edwards, who headlined UFC 278 last weekend in an undisputed welterweight title rematch with Auchi champion, Usman, avenged a December 2015 unanimous decision loss to the latter – stopping Usman’s dominant title reign with a thunderous left high kick in the final minute of their Salt Lake City rematch.

The Birmingham native was conceivably en route to another unanimous decision loss to Usman come the conclusion of their Vivint Arena main event, with the champion building up a considerable lead in the second, third, and fourth rounds.

However, with just over a minute remaining in the fifth and final round, disguising a left high kick behind a jab-straight combination, Leon Edwards caught a slipping Usman with a massive left kick, dropping the champion to the canvas immediately, unconscious.

With the victory, Edwards is now expected to attempt his first defense of welterweight gold in a championship trilogy rubber match with Usman next year – potentially on home soil in the U.K. – with UFC president, Dana White remaining coy on a potential Wembley debut for the organization.

Joe Rogan heaps praise on Leon Edwards following UFC 278 title win

Receiving major plaudits for his spectacular rallying victory, Edwards has, according to UFC color commentator, Rogan – turned in the greatest high kick knockout in the history of the sport – given the significance of his fight with ONX Labs trainee, Usman.

“That was one of the most spectacular head kick knockouts in the history of the sport – considering the stakes, considering the consequences,” Joe Rogan said post-UFC 278. “I mean, it’s flawless – flawless technique. … The way he (Leon Edwards) set it up with that left (hand), Kamaru (Usman) leaned to the right – perfect head kick, out cold.”

“Nothing compares, it’s the greatest head kick knockout in the history of the sport – with the most consequences, the most at stake, the most doubt, the most people counting him out, including us,” Joe Rogan explained. (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

After recently going viral for his admission of contracting a case of herpes before a fight, Fury FC standout, Joel Bauman has once more grabbed several headlines after he launched a verbal attack on talkshow host, Jimmy Kimmel, and Hollywood elites, calling them “pedophiles” – and urging them to release “the flight logs”.

Joel Bauman previously admitted to fighting following a week of herpes simplex virus outbreaks

Bauman, who grabbed headlines earlier this summer, shockingly admitted following a victory at Fury FC 61, that he had contracted herpes before his fight.

“Last night I was tired, I was exhausted,” Joel Bauman said during his post-fight interview. “I’m about to launch this NFT that’s going to change the fight game. And I put in 30 all-nighters before that fight. I had herpes before that fight, two outbreaks in the span of a week. I’m here, I’m healthy, let’s go, whatever. It doesn’t matter.”

And following a TKO victory over Anthony Ivy, Bauman embarked on a post-fight interview tirade, where he once more touted his NFT, as well as taking aim at the Hollywood elite and the aforenoted, Kimmel, urging him to release “the flight logs”, as well as labelling the Californian elite as “pedophiles”.

“So all those doubting my NFT, you’re looking at the guy that’s the reason, why college athletes and high-school athletes are getting paid today, – Mr. influence to influencers,” Joel Bauman said, now sporting a studded collar and leather harness. “Secondly, Jimmy Kimmel – viral this, I fight to eradicate childhood malnutrition from the planet. And until they release the flight logs, you, the mainstream media, and Hollywood are all pedophiles to me. Eat d*ck. Am I cancelled yet .com?”

The original clip of Bauman’s post-fight interview, which was initially shared on the official UFC Fight Pass Twitter account, has since been deleted at the time of publication.

Bauman has previously competed under the LFA, Bellator, and Gamebred Fighting Championships banner to boot.

Cardi B disses UFC star for alarming Andrew Tate comparison

Cardi B Jake Shields Andrew Tate

While not a usual topic of discussion in the MMA world, Cardi B is making waves due to her response to insults by former Strikeforce champion Jake Shields on Twitter.

Shields, a veteran of major MMA promotions like the UFC, PFL, and Strikeforce, is known for being outspoken. His Twitter tirade turned to that of misogynist Andrew Tate getting banned from social media, and he didn’t hold back when sharing his opinion.

“People are freaking out about young boys looking up to Andrew Tate but totally fine with young girls looking up to Cardi B and the Kardashians,” Jake Shields began. “Tate’s main message is stop being lazy and making excuses and go work hard and get in shape and make money.”

“Cardi’s is go do drugs,” Shields continued. “F*** random men and go through life as a brain-dead moron.”

Harsh words, and it’s worth noting that Jake Shields came under heavy fire for supporting Andrew Tate. A man who is a self-confessed “misogynist” with some sickening views on women. However, for some reason, Shields defends the man. Going so far as to top off his tirade with a final attempt at defense on Tate’s behalf. “Dozens of rapers have songs glorifying murder,” He said. “But Andrew Tate’s the biggest problem.”

Cardi B claps back at Jake Shields

In a now-deleted tweet, the New York City native would share her thoughts on the situation, and respond to the former Strikeforce champion. “I’m married,” the rapper said. “I don’t smoke weed, I don’t pop pills, I don’t do coke, I’m a mom of 2 and I do a lot of charity work.”

“…But hey,” she continued. “Let me put Cardi into it to defend a man who defends misogyny and rape.”

As far as Andrew Tate goes, he’s been quoted to have said women are property, and similar to dogs. “If I have responsibility over her, then I must have a degree of authority,” Tate said in a Youtube video, according to BBC News. “You can’t be responsible for a dog if it doesn’t obey you,” he concluded.

Unsurprisingly, with poor views such as those, Tate has come under fire seemingly worldwide, a prime factor that lead to his social media accounts being banned.

The misogynistic views of Tate are definitely not shared by anyone here at LowKick MMA, and we encourage everybody to treat people fairly regardless of race or gender.

What’s your take on the situation?

Conor McGregor has come to the defence of Anthony Joshua after the Brit bizarrely took to the microphone following his disappointing split decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk.

A disappointing night turned worse for Joshua after he fell short in his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk. The 32-year-old took to the opportunity to share his thoughts with those in attendance and the mass watching online after his match-up. Joshua referenced the ongoing conflict in Ukraine amongst other issues relating to his fight after originally throwing two belts to the ground and leaving the ring.

Spectators were left with a sour taste in their mouths following Joshua’s actions however former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor has defended his actions following his disappointing outing. McGregor even went on to credit Joshua for the ‘great speech’ he delivered post-fight.

“You are all going on ridiculous over this. That is a great speech right there. Fair play to him he made it yet he is still in there keeping that cog going. If they wanted the mic they could’ve tried get it back. Then he gives me a shout out. Great fight, thank you! #champchamp”

Usyk along with those in attendance were caught off-guard by Joshua’s comments having initially embraced following the pair’s 12-round battle.

Anthony Joshua reflects on the disappointing defeat to Oleksandr Usyk

Following on from this having had time to collect his thoughts and process what would have been a difficult night for him Anthony Joshua took to his social media to update his following on his status.

“I wish @usykaa continued success in your quest for greatness. You are a class act champ.

Yesterday I had to mentally take myself into a dark place to compete for the championship belts! I had two fights, one with Usyk and one with my emotions and both got the better of me.”

In a follow-up post, Anthony Joshua would reflect upon his post-fight statements.

“I’ll be the first to admit, I let myself down. I acted out of pure passion and emotion and when not controlled it ain’t great.

I love this sport so so much and I’ll be better from this point on.

Respect”

Joshua is expected to take some time away from the sport to recover but is expected to return in the future after some speculated this may be time to call a curtain on the former champion’s career.

Similar to Joshua, McGregor is expected to make his return to the octagon next year having not stepped inside the cage since his loss to Dustin Poirier in their trilogy match at UFC 264.
