Former Overeem Teammate Coenen: Calls Steroid Accusations True, More Dirt Coming

Marloes Coenen believes it could take more than the truth to set Alistair Overeem free.

In an appearance on Just Scrap Radio, the former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion sounded off on her former teammate Overeem, who was recently removed from the UFC 146 main event after failing his pre-fight drug test.

“If you do stuff like that and get caught, just like Alistair now, just suck it up and don’t complain about it. I think the truth will always come out. We know a lot of things about Alistair, a lot of negative things, but we never talked about it and knew that the truth would come out. More dirt will come up.”

Overeem, whose testosterone was more than double the regulatory limit, recently addressed the Nevada State Athletic Commission in a hearing held on Tuesday.

He blamed the positive testing on an anti-inflammatory medication prescribed to him by a doctor. According to Overeem, he aggravated an old rib injury training for his UFC title bout against Junior Dos Santos.

His manager Glenn Robinson revealed that Overeem decided to withdraw from the bout on Friday and “asked for a continuance to hear the case so he can prove he is a clean fighter.”

Coenen, who trained alongside Overeem during her stint at Golden Glory, doesn’t appear convinced by the statement released by the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion.

The most interesting part about Coenen’s interview is the fact that she alluded to more dirt possibly being unveiled in the Overeem investigation.

Could there be more facts surrounding the case that we have yet to be made aware of?

“Alistair will receive his punishment for what he has done, and we don’t have to deliver that to him because karma will come and get him.”

UFC Rising Star Roland Delorme: "This Fight Will Be Bloody and Greasy"

Some individuals grow up wanting to fight while others grow up fighting.

UFC bantamweight Roland Delorme falls in the latter category.

“Fighting was just something I did growing up,” Delorme told Bleacher Report. “It got me in a lot of trouble too.”

“Finally my parents had enough and they started taking me to classes so that my fighting was structured. I got my black belt and started training in jiu-jitsu, boxing, and wrestling. At that time, the first UFC was coming out and I knew it was something I wanted to do,” said Delorme. “I wanted to fight in a cage.”

After coming out on top in six of his first seven fights, Delorme was on his way to the Ultimate Fighter house to take part in Season 14.

After being selected by Team Miller, Delorme was eliminated from competition after falling to TJ Dillashaw via second-round submission.

However, the knowledge and insight gained was more than enough for Delorme to be content with despite not reaching the finals.

“Just being in the house was an unreal experience. The best part was never having an easy day. You were always going up against someone new and they were bringing their best that day,” said Delorme. “I learned so many new things and the experience was more than worth it.”

Delorme did enough to catch the eye of UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, as he was slated to meet Josh Ferguson at the Season 14 finale.

After a hard-fought bout, Delorme was able to capture his first true win inside the Octagon, as he submitted Ferguson via rear-naked choke.

The best part of it all—Delorme finally was the one to be interviewed by UFC color commentator Joe Rogan after watching hundreds of post-fight interviews over the years.

“The craziest part was standing beside Joe Rogan after my win. It was pretty surreal. You’re so used to seeing other guys be interviewed and then all of a sudden you’re the one being interviewed. It was a pretty amazing experience,” said Delorme.

Delorme has hopes of meeting Rogan yet again, as he’ll be squaring off with fellow bantamweight, Nick Denis, at UFC on FOX 3.

Denis is also coming off his first win inside the Octagon after knocking out Joseph Sandoval in a matter of 22 seconds at UFC on FX just a little over three months ago.

“Nick has definitely got some power. He brings it every time and he’s got some good wrestling as well. Overall, I think I’m probably the better wrestler but not by much. This is going to be a battle. We’re both finishers and we don’t see the judges very often,” said Delorme. “I don’t expect to see them in this fight either.”

While Delorme is unsure of exactly how his bout will play out, he promises one thing.

Blood.

“I’m going to be in his face and make it hurt. This bout is going to be bloody. Everybody wants to see blood so I’m going to give it to them,” said Delorme.

“This is going to be a bloody and greasy fight.”

Sonnen Blasts Silva: ‘I Insulted Your Family and You Didn’t Do a Damn Thing’

It’s easy to see the ongoing feud between Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva is becoming a little too personal for comfort.

At the press conference for UFC 148, Sonnen didn’t back down from any of the previous remarks he’s made about Silva.

In front of the Brazilian media, the self-proclaimed “People’s Champ” blasted the reigning middleweight champion in one of the most tense press conference moments in UFC history.

“I don’t know man. This guy says the craziest things. He is surrounded by such “yes” men and it’s unbelievable that he actually thinks like that. He talks about his legacy. He is so close to the trees that he can’t see the forest.

Come to America and ask people what they think of him. I mean, this guy is the real deal, wow, he became the number one contender when he beat up the great Chris Leben. He then defended his belt against the great Patrick Cote and the amazing Thales Leites. What a star this guy is.

What about the fact that I called him out for six years. ‘He disrespected my family.’ Yes, I did, and what did you do about it? You didn’t do a damn thing, and you’re not going to do anything on July 7th.

Get your excuses ready now, Anderson. I told everybody the first time I fought him that our skills are not even close. I will destroy him, and I’m going to tell you again now, our skills are not even close. So go to your Ed Soares school of excuse making and get them handy because you are going to need them on July 7th.”

The rematch between Silva and Sonnen was originally slated to take place at UFC 147 in Brazil, but due to scheduling conflicts, it was moved back as the UFC 148 headliner in Las Vegas.

Throughout MMA history, we have all witnessed some pretty significant rivalries, but none have reached the personal depth of Silva and Sonnen.

There has always been an invisible line that fighters tend to never cross, but when it comes to Silva, Sonnen has consistently stomped all over the line.

As this bout inches closer, emotions will surely be running at an all-time high.

The emotions run a little deeper when a person’s family is involved, but this could all be a tactic by Sonnen in hopes of throwing Silva off his game.

Has Sonnen gone too far, or is he right in calling out the often dormant Silva?

The Weird Public Hearing That Bought UFC Star Alistair Overeem Three Months

There were plenty of strange things going on at Alistair Overeem‘s hearing yesterday before the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Overeem was in front of the commission after a surprise drug test at a March 27 press conference showed a testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio of 14:1, more than twice Nevada’s legal limits.

Overeem had some ‘splaining to do, and the media sat rapt at the dog and pony show that unfolded.

We learned some startling things about the former K-1 champion who, eventually, had his application for a fight license denied, forcing the Dutch dynamo to sit out nine months and think about what he’s done.

We learned that Overeem sprinted away from a press conference promoting UFC 146, ostensibly to avoid a surprise drug test, jumping into a car that I can only hope was a Mini Cooper for comedic purposes. He was eventually located and escorted back by UFC officials.

We learned that he allowed a doctor to prescribe him a mystery cocktail of drugs that he injected without question, apparently not concerned at all about what he put into his Ferrari of a body.

We learned that, despite the endless jokes, he’s unafraid to make equine references like “I will get back on the horse” for the public record.

But one thing that many pundits have pointed out as odd, the fact that Overeem’s physician, Dr. Hector Molina, has been sued during the course of pursuing his vocation, is not strange at all. According to the American Medical Association, 61 percent of doctors will be sued before their careers end. Molina, as a surgeon and business owner, falls into a particularly high risk group:

The August report found that 42.2% of physicians were sued, with 22.4% sued twice or more. Rates varied by specialty, but general surgeons and obstetrician-gynecologists were most likely to be sued (69.2%). Family physicians and general internists had similar rates (38.9% and 34%). Pediatricians and psychiatrists were sued the least.

Physicians who had an ownership interest in a practice were at greater risk, with 47.5% reporting being sued, compared with 33.4% for those with no ownership interest.

What’s odd about Molina isn’t that he’s been sued. That’s a part of doing business in the medical world. What’s truly odd is his decision to inject Overeem, who he knew was a professional athlete, with a homebrew drug cocktail he testified was “a combination of Vitamin B-12, Dexamethosone, Toradol and an aqueous form of testosterone.”

When I go to the doctor and require prescription drugs, she writes the prescription, often prints out the instructions for usage, and sends me to a pharmacy to pick them up. She doesn’t whip out an unlabeled vial of her own special mix, inject me on the spot and leave the vial and two needles with me to use “as needed.”

In the end, the “I didn’t know defense” can only take you so far. It’s your responsibility to know. Period. The excuse, however, bought Overeem three months off of the typical punishment of one calendar year.

He will be back, some think conveniently, just in time to potentially headline the UFC’s next late December extravaganza—which just happens to be held in Nevada every year. Well played NSAC, well played.

Dan Henderson Questions Whether Jon Jones Is Being Fake or ‘Genuine’

Dan Henderson sees right through Jon “Bones” Jones.

Since ascending to the top of the light heavyweight division, Jones has been vilified by many MMA fans.

Henderson believes Jones’ personality is the main issue. He isn’t being “genuine” about who he really is, and the fans are smart enough to see right through it.

The MMA legend sat down with Ariel Helwani in an episode of The MMA Hour on Monday to give his take on why Jones struggles to connect with fans.

“I think it has to do with being genuine and the fans sense that: when you are and when you’re not. I’m pretty much who I am all the time, and I don’t know if they get that impression from him.”

What impression does Henderson get from Jones? Does he think the young champ is putting up a façade to mask his true identity?

“Not really. I think he was a little better after his fight with Rashad than he had been in the past, but I haven’t got that impression from him, no. I don’t know him personally, so I can’t really say if he’s genuine or not. It’s just the impression that I think fans get.”

Whether or not Jones’ personality is a façade, there is nothing fake about the otherworldly talent he possesses in the Octagon. At UFC 145, he dominated another former champion in “Sugar” Rashad Evans.

The amount of talent Jones has gone through in such a short period of time is astonishing. Fans are already debating whether or not Jones is the greatest of all time, despite him only having three title defenses under his belt.

Can he be stopped?

At 41 years of age, Henderson believes he has the ability to succeed where others have failed.

“Everybody has holes in their game. I just think he matches up style wise well with me. He’s gonna stand and bang a little bit. He gets in there and starts to throw some punches and then gets on the inside a little bit, too, and likes to get into the clinch. Those are places where I’m sure that our fight will go that I’m very comfortable with.”

It could take a perfect game plan to dethrone Jones, but Henderson is fully confident that he is capable of pulling off the upset. He could get his shot as early as July 21 at UFC 149.

“A lot of it is pressuring him, cutting him off. A lot of times it’s tough to do, tough to implement sometimes – to keep a guy always on the defense, keep pressuring him – but against some like Jon, that should be the game plan.”

Chuck Liddell Would Come out of Retirement for a Title Fight with Jon Jones

Jon Jones might be the greatest light heavyweight of all time. In fact, if you’re asking me what I think, I’d say that considering who he’s beaten over the past 12 months and how he’s beaten them, there can be no question that Jones is the best the division has ever seen. I don’t need fancy-pants math to tell me what I already know in my gut.

Until Jones came along, Chuck Liddell was considered the best UFC light heavyweight champion of all time, knocking fools out left and right and striking fear deep into the hearts of every other fighter in the division. He was viewed like a Mike Tyson in his prime, the kind of fighter you expected to finish his opponent in violent fashion, and he delivered.

These days, Jones is the fighter to fear and the guy ruling the division with an iron fist. So it makes sense, then, that Liddell wouldn’t want to come out his UFC-mandated retirement unless it was for a title fight with the champ.

“The only thing that would make me even think about coming back is if they gave me a shot at the title,” Liddell told UFC Tonight. “I don’t want come back as a sideshow, you know? It’s just one of those things. It’s not something I want to do.”

I guess that officially puts the kibosh on any potential rumors of Liddell looking to return to the Octagon, because there’s no way he’d be anywhere close to a title fight if he decided to step back in the cage. Not that Dana White would allow his good friend to further risk his health by fighting again, anyway.

But you can help but wonder how a prime Liddell would fare against Jones, can you? Perhaps Jones would run through Liddell like he has so many other former champions. But maybe not. Maybe Liddell would wade through that gargantuan reach, get in the pocket and blast Jones on the chin.

Stranger things have happened.
