Reigning flyweight world champion Alexandre Pantoja doesn’t particularly care who he fights as long as he has the opportunity to defend his title at UFC 301 when the promotion returns to Rio de Janeiro.

With wins over Manel Kape, Brandon Royval, and Brandon Moreno over the last few years, it appears to be slim pickings at the top of the 125-pound division. However, this Saturday’s return to The APEX in Las Vegas could produce a viable title challenge for Pantoja.

Undefeated division standout Muhammad Mokaev will face another fallen foe from Pantoja’s past, Alex Silva. If ‘The Punisher’ can put together a dominant performance, it may be enough to move him up the ladder and into his first UFC title opportunity.

“There’s enough time, even though [Mokaev] cuts a lot of weight,” Pantoja said on MMA Fighting’s Trocação Franca podcast. “I know that because he trained here at American Top Team before and he’s really big for the division. I think it makes total sense if he wins. Moreno had the ball on his court [and lost], and now Mokaev has it. Let’s see what happens.”

The biggest obstacle, as referenced by Pantoja, would be the relatively short turnaround. UFC 301 is scheduled to take place on May 4, 2024, giving Mokaev eight weeks to recover, train, and cut weight. Doable, yes, but it would certainly put him in an unfavorable position for such a big moment.

Thus far, Muhammad Mokaev is 10-0 in his pro MMA career with his last five victories coming under the UFC banner. He has stayed fairly active, earning back-to-back third-round submission victories over Jafel Filho and Tim Elliott in 2023.

“He’s a very talented kid,” Pantoja said of Mokaev. “He’s very talented and likes to learn, but he follows a different line of thought that I do. He was raised in London, so he’s not a legitimate Russian, but he has that culture behind him.”

Muhammad Mokaev lands third round arm-triangle win over Tim Elliott at UFC 294 Highlights

Remaining undefeated during his Octagon tenure, number eleven ranked flyweight contender, Muhammad Mokaev moves to 5-0 under the banner of the promotion, landing a third round arm-triangle choke submission win over former title challenger, Tim Elliott in the featured preliminary card clash of UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Mokaev, who entered tonight’s clash with Elliott off the back of four prior consecutive victories inside the Octagon, recently landed a third round neck crank submission success against Jafel Fialho back in March in London at UFC 285.

And showing of his stunning wrestling and grappling ability against former one-time title challenger, Elliott in tonight’s clash for a spot within the flyweight top-10 rankings, Mokaev had to fight off two taut submission attempts in the form of a guillotine choke and a triangle choke attempt.

Managing to land an incredible sweep and subsequent takedown in the third round, Mokaev, who now holds an impressive 11-0-0(1) professional record, stopped Elliott with a third round arm-triangle choke submission win.

It’s safe to say there is no love lost between undefeated prospect Muhammad Mokaev and fast-rising UK star Paddy Pimblett.

On October 21, Mokaev is scheduled to step back inside the Octagon for a clash with veteran standout Tim Elliott. Ahead of his return, Mokaev appeared on the Believe You Me podcast with Michael Bisping to discuss his upcoming contest and what may come next should he collect his 11th straight victory at UFC 294.

Needless to say, it didn’t take long for Mokaev to come up with a name when asked who he would like to fight if given the chance.

“I want to f*ck [Paddy Pimblett] up bad! I just don’t like this guy,” Mokaev said. “I beat a couple of guys from his gym he’s still upset about that,” (h/t MMA News).

Muhammad Mokaev Hopes to See Tony Ferguson Retire After UFC 296

Pimblett will make his first appearance of 2023 come December 16 when the Liverpudlian makes his long-awaited return for a showdown with former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson. Asked for his thoughts on the matchup between Pimblet and Ferguson, Mokaev said:

“Tony is good. Like, Tony is not like people put a cross around him but I mean he was doing good against Chandler, he was doing good. I think he can beat Paddy. Paddy is not like great fighter. Like, his chin is up. He shoots like I don’t know. He lost last fight too.”

Fight fans have been heavily critical of the matchmaking with many suggesting that the bout is putting Paddy Pimblett in a lose-lose situation while others believe Ferguson would be best served by hanging up his gloves for good after dropping six straight inside the Octagon.

“I think he should retire after this fight,” Mokaev said. “He earned a lot of money. What else he need?”

If Tony Ferguson comes up short against Pimblett at UFC 296, ‘El Cucuy‘ will tie B.J. Penn’s record for the longest losing streak in UFC history.

Muhammad Mokaev reveals injury following kneebar UFC 286

UFC flyweight Muhammad Mokaev is set to be sidelined for the next while, after suffering an injury in his recent fight.

On the undercard of UFC 286, Mokaev would score an impressive victory over promotional newcomer, Jafel Filho, via a third round submission. However, after comfortably controlling the grappling exchange, the 22-year-old ran into serious trouble, getting caught in a kneebar attempt by Filho.

Mokaev refused to tap, even with the leg being seriously hyperextended, causing the leg to curve and after hearing ‘six or seven’ cracks in his leg.

‘I felt his groin guard on my knee. I heard all the ripping and I was just waiting until it fully rips. I will never tap,’ he continued. ‘I know it’s a crazy thing to say. I will go sleep. If they don’t stop, I will never tap. Even if I end my career this way. I just have this principle.’

Muhammad Mokaev gives return timetable

With such a gruesome-looking submission attempt, one would expect a pretty severe injury that would result in a fighter being forced out for a fairly lengthy period. However, Mokaev seems to have made a lucky escape (sort of) and will only be out of action for a couple months with a grade 2 partial MCL tear and will not even need surgery.

Alhadmulillah! 6-8 weeks I will be back training. Thank you for all your messages, I received crazy amount of the support about my knee! It’s a strap season for me and my people! I will be champion one day InshaAllah.

Mokaev, 22,  is currently ranked No.12 in the UFC’s 125lb ranking and will have his eyes set on progressing upon his return.

Should Muhammad Mokaev have tapped?

Muhammad Mokaev submission win over Jafel Fialho UFC 286

Undefeated UFC flyweight challenger, Muhammad Mokaev was forced to grit through a late, third round kneebar attempt from Dana White’s Contender Series alum, Jafel Fialho — submitting the Brazilian himself in the dying embers of their UFC 286 preliminary card matchup with a rear-naked choke effort.

Mokaev, who had landed a trio of victories in the Octagon since his transition to the promotion back in March of last year, debuting with a submission win over Cody Durden — before besting Charles Johnson, and then Malcolm Gordon in further decision and submission wins, respectively.

Wrestling his way toward a likely decision win over Fialho, Mokaev’s undefeated record was in great jeopardy midway through the final round, with the Brazilian threatening and almost finding is way through with a taut kneebar.

Fully extended in the submission attempt, Mokaev managed to survive and grit through — despite suffering some visible damage, before wrapping up his own rear-naked choke win with less than half a minute remaining in the preliminary card pairing.
