Prior to their highly anticipated rematch at August 20, 2016’s UFC 202, bitter rivals Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz got into a heated exchange at a pre-fight press conference. Each man infamously fired water bottles and cans at each other and the consequences for the situation are still being felt.

Luckily for McGregor, however, his punishment was reduced by the Nevada State Athletic Commission today (March 22, 2017). Originally set to receive a $150,000 fine, the Irishman will now receive a $25,000 fine, while also having to complete 25 hours of community service.

Something similar could also be headed Diaz’s way, as commission chairman Anthony Marnell suggested that reducing Diaz’s punishment is only fair:

“We’re going to reach out to Nate and let him know what’s fair is fair and he has an opportunity to come back before us, if he’d like to,” Marnell told the media (Via Fox Sports). “And we’ll make that as painless and as cheap as possible. I think what you heard Attorney General Bateman talk about today was not a percentage of the purse but a fine that’s equivalent to the action taken. So, if we were to do that, you could speculate right now the commission would probably have some sort of reduction, some sort of refund coming back to Nate. My No. 1 goal is fairness.”

The Stockon native had originally been fined $50,000 and given 50 hours of community service to complete.

Do you agree with Marnell’s idea?

The UFC Needs To Book McGregor vs. Diaz III

In a recent interview, UFC President Dana White seemed to be against the idea of booking a trilogy bout between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, saying that Diaz is the much larger man and that two fighters can only endure so many wars throughout a career.

Despite White’s reasoning, however, there are also multiple reasons why the UFC should indeed look to book the rubber match between McGregor and Diaz.

First off, it seems as if there has come a time where the UFC is lacking legitimate stars. In recent memory, the promotion has been seen creating new divisions and various interim titles simply to create main events for cards in need, which is why it’s strange to see White not in favor of a money-making bout between two of the sport’s biggest stars. To be frank, there is simply no bigger fight in mixed martial arts at the moment other than a third bout between the “Notorious” one and the Stockton bad boy.

Secondly, with McGregor now holding the 155-pound belt, the two could do battle with a title on the line, which would make the fight as well as the rivalry all the more intriguing. No matter what White says, Diaz has spent the majority of his career competing as a lightweight and he’s currently ranked No. 6 in the division.

Obviously top contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson are more deserving of the next shot at McGregor’s newly acquired title, but we have learned that rankings mean very little in this day and age. Also, the No. 1-ranked Nurmagomedov and the No. 2-ranked Ferguson have been rumored to be fighting each other, which could open to door for Diaz to slide up depending on how much time McGregor is taking off.

Finally, McGregor and Diaz simply need to settle the score. The two have split wins and losses in two welterweight bouts with Diaz submitting the Irishman at UFC 196 and McGregor winning a majority decision in the rematch at UFC 202. After the rematch, both men showed interest in a third bout with McGregor saying that it would have to be at 155-pounds.

With these points in mind, there is no better time than now to make the fight happen. The weight is set and the stars have aligned for McGregor to finally defend a title against a rival in a bout that is simply too monumental to pass up.

What’s your opinion of the potentially historic trilogy bout?

Eddie Alvarez: Conor McGregor Has Fought ‘Subpar’ Opposition

Reigning UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has won eight of his nine UFC bouts to date with seven of those wins coming by way of stoppage, but Eddie Alvarez, who McGregor will challenge for the lightweight title at Nov. 12’s UFC 205 from New York, isn’t impressed with the Irishman’s resume.

Speaking on a recent conference call to promote UFC 205, the 155-pound champion said that McGregor has faced ‘subpar’ competition:

“The guys he’s picked to fight, these are subpar guys. Even Nate (Diaz) is a .500 lightweight,” Alvarez said.

“Everybody in the lightweight division has beat Nate and he couldn’t He had trouble doing it. The guys he’s faced are nothing of the caliber of the fighter I am. He will see the night of the fight that, ‘shit, I have been going up against shitty opponents that have been good style matchups and this one is not and I’m fucked.”

Alvarez is referencing McGregor’s UFC 196 bout with Diaz in which the Stockton native submitted the “Notorious” one in the second round after accepting the bout on extremely short notice. McGregor went on to avenge that loss at August’s UFC 202, scoring a majority decision victory. Other than his victory over Diaz, McGregor’s notable UFC accomplishments include wins over Chad Mendes and former longtime featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

How do you expect the main event at UFC 205 to play out?

Conor McGregor was recently fined $75,000 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for his role in the bottle throwing incident at the UFC 202 pre-fight press conference prior to his rematch with Nate Diaz, which he ultimately won via unanimous decision. The “Notorious” one essentially launched two Monster energy cans as well as a few water bottles at Diaz and his team, while the Stockton native returned fire.

While McGregor undoubtedly won’t have a problem paying the fine, it looks as if he may use the cans he threw to get the job done. The reigning 145-pound king took to his official Instagram account to announce that he was selling the two cans at $75,000 a piece:

McGregor is next scheduled to challenge lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at Nov. 12’s UFC 205 from the famed Madison Square Garden in hopes of becoming the first man in promotional history to hold two titles at one time.

Last week, reigning UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor appeared before the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) via telephone regarding the bottle-throwing incident at the UFC 202 press conference prior to his highly-anticipated rematch with Nate Diaz, a bout he won via majority decision.

Ultimately, the Irishman was given a hefty $150,000 fine along with 50 hours of community service. Despite McGregor’s actions, the punishment seemed to be a bit much, and the champ even wished the commission ‘good luck trying to get it (the fine)’.

It now, however, looks as if McGregor may not have actually been fined $150,000. According to NSAC executive Bob Bennet, who recently spoke with MMAFighting, the $150,000 fine includes a $75,000 fine as well as the value of a public service announcement that McGregor must do for the commission, something he and his team agreed to.

“It appears the media and others got it wrong,” Bennett said.

Diaz has yet to meet with the commission regarding his punishment for the incident.

In the meantime, McGregor is gearing up to challenge lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in the main event of November 12’s UFC 205 from New York in hopes of becoming the first man in promotional history to hold two titles at one time.

ESPN’s Brett Okamota detailed the hearing via his official Twitter account:

After Diaz got up and left the press conference with his team, the two sides exchanged words before bottles and cans began to fly across the room. The Stockton native has yet to receive a punishment from the commission.

An interesting thing to note is that McGregor was present at the hearing via phone after a rumor surfaced earlier today that he had been ‘knocked out cold’ during a sparring session leading up to his November 12, 2016 lightweight title fight with Eddie Alvarez.
