Nick Diaz has done it again.

The UFC held a media conference call for UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET.

The media call was set to consist of BJ Penn, Nick Diaz, Cheick Kongo and Matt Mitrione.

When the media call went underway, Diaz was not present.

When asked if Diaz would be present at some point throughout the conference, UFC correspondents responded:

“We’re not sure, we are in the process of locating Diaz now.”

Surprise, surprise, surprise.

About 45 minutes after the media call began, Diaz showed up and was immediately asked why he was late.

Diaz responded, stating:

“I had no idea about a call. No one called me this week or told me anything.”

While no one knows the real reason why Diaz was late for the media call, UFC fans won’t find this news surprising at all.

Will this be the last straw for Nick Diaz?

His opponent, BJ Penn did say “he does always show up to the fight… so, I guess we don’t have to worry about that stuff.” Hmmm… Maybe Carlos Condit should be placed on standby, just in case.

Let the record reflect that, when it comes to Cesar Gracie’s request for a five-round fight between Nick Diaz and B.J. Penn at UFC 137, Penn isn’t scared, homie.

On Wednesday’s pre-fight media call Penn responded to questions about Gracie’s comments to MMA Fighting by saying he was “happy to do a five-round fight” with Diaz on October 29, as long as his paycheck increases along with the bout duration.

As for who might be responsible for coming up with the extra cash, Penn’s open to suggestions there.

Initially, Penn said that while he’d gladly up the bout from three rounds to five to reflect its main event status, “this is a job and I want to be compensated accordingly.”

If UFC president Dana White wants to alter the bout agreement, Penn said, “he can give me a call and he can compensate me right now.”

On the other hand, since it was Gracie, Diaz’s manager, who first asked for a five-rounder when talking with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on Tuesday, Penn suggested that maybe he should be the one to come up with the extra cash to make it worth his while.

“Cesar’s a strange guy. I don’t know why he did that in the first place,” said Penn. “I think Cesar should have to be the guy to compensate me to take it, not Dana. But at the end of day, no, I don’t mind. I’d love to do a five-round fight. If I’m compensated, this is a job…there’s nothing wrong with a main event being five rounds.”

Though White has made no public remarks about the possibility of upping the bout to five rounds, Gracie insisted on Tuesday that the UFC boss was “good with it.” As for Diaz, he seemed unconcerned about the bout length, regardless of what his own manager would like to see happen.

“It’s whatever, you know,” Diaz said. “It’s really not up to me. Either way I guess is fine. It’s going to be okay for me.”

BJ Penn versus Nick Diaz in a five round non-title fight at UFC 137?

UFC President Dana White has already stated that the main event bout will be a three-rounder, but that isn’t stopping Diaz’s camping from pushing for the boss to add a couple of rounds to the anticipated bout.

“Don’t be scared, homie. Let’s make it five rounds,” Diaz’s manager and trainer Cesar Gracie said towards Penn in an interview with MMAFighting.com on Tuesday. “These guys have to prove they are ready. These guys are fighters. BJ always said he’s a warrior. The old school days of MMA, back when it was NHB, they fought forever.”

According to Gracie, White is okay with making the bout five rounds, if Penn’s camp agrees, but there has yet to be any official word from Penn or his camp.

One thing is sure, Diaz wasted little time jumping on the bandwagon for a five round fight.

“Dana is good with it. We’ve agreed to it. If BJ agrees to it, we’ll make it happen,” said Gracie. “If they can’t fight five rounds against each other, how are they going to fight five rounds against GSP?”

The Penn and Diaz bout was initially set to be the co-main event to the welterweight championship bout between Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit.

The bout was bumped to UFC 137 headliner on Tuesday after St-Pierre suffered an injury while training and withdrew from his bout with Condit.

While White is fine with both sides agreeing on a five round fight, he won’t push either to accept a fight they weren’t prepared for.

“They didn’t train for five rounds,” White told MMAFighting.com in a text.
