In a long awaited change in policy, the UFC have deemed that athletes who test positive for carboxy-THC will no longer face suspensions or fines (H/T MMA Junkie). Carboxy-THC is the ingredient in marijuana that has led to huge amounts of controversy within MMA. Nick Diaz was notoriously handed a 5 year suspension in 2015, for testing postive following his fight against Anderson Silva.

More recently UFC fighters such as Jamahal Hill have had their wins overturned, whilst Tim Elliot and Luis Pena have been fined percentages of their fight purses. Hill was quick to react to the news, with the undefeated prospect looking to get his win back.

However the change in policy has not had a positive impact on all fighters. Niko Price has revealed that there has been no change to his suspension, following his draw with Donald Cerrone.

Angela Hill stated that she believes the new policy should serve as an example to the state athletic commissions as well.

Other fighters such as Lauren Murphy, Louis Smolka and Randy Costa have also voiced their approval of move away from the archaic doping policy.

What are your thoughts on this change in policy?

Niko Price

UFC welterweight Niko Price faces six months on the sidelines due to a positive test for marijuana in the aftermath of his fight with Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in September.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission handed down the punishment on Tuesday. Price has also been fined $8500 and his draw with Cerrone has been overturned – it has now been declared a no-contest.

Price took to social media to react to the news and thank fans for their support, he wrote.

“Thank you all for the kind words. I’ll be back and ready to throw down right away after this suspension in march/April @ufc @seanshelby #ufc”

In June a report found that almost half of UFC fighters use marijuana which is now legal in many American states including Nevada. UFC president Dana White claimed he was trying to “loosen” rules on weed after several fighters including Price received suspensions for testing positive for the drug.

“I didn’t even know (about Price being suspended). We’ve been working on (changing the marijuana rules) for a long time,” White said. “I’m surprised that actually happened. They must have been way over the threshold then. I didn’t even know,” White said.

“I don’t think you can’t test,” White added. “When you’re in-competition you have to test these guys. You can’t let somebody go into the ring high. It just can’t happen, you know? So yeah. I don’t know what to do with that. But we’re trying to, you know, what’s the word I’m looking for, we’re trying to loosen it up. But at the same time, you can’t have guys showing up high.”

Unfortunately for Price those changes haven’t come about fast enough. He will now have to give up a significant piece of his fight purse, sit out for some of 2021 and see one of the biggest results of his career overturned.

Forcing a point deduction in the opening-frame – Niko ‘The Hybrid’ Price landed two inadvertent eye pokes to each of Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone’s eyes, in a hugely-entertaining three-round co-headliner.

Unloading the tank early, the often unorthodox Price threw flurry after flurry, landing elbows aplenty at the fence opposite a resilient, Cerrone. Mixing up his strikes well – BMF Ranch owner Cerrone seemed to improve the longer the fight played out, as is the usual norm for the veteran. Receiving a dubious 29-27 judging in his favour, future Hall of Famer Cerrone managed to claw a majority draw, with two judges marking a 28-28 as a result of the indavertent eye pokes from Florida native, Price.

Below, check out the highlights from the entertaining clash between Cerrone and Price.
