UFC 238 took place this past weekend (Sat. June 8, 2019) from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Prior to the pay-per-view (PPV) portion, several bouts took place on the preliminary card, which aired on ESPN. MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer reports that the broadcast did the Las Vegas-based promotion’s best numbers in three months with 964,000 viewers. The show peaked at 1.2 million viewers during the featured preliminary bout, featuring strawweights Tatiana Suarez and Nina Ansaroff.

The preliminary card was also the highest-rated sports show in the 18-34 male demographic. It beat out MLB baseball on FOX, the Belmont Stakes on NBC, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup. However, all three of those broadcasts drew bigger overall ratings. MLB pulled in 2,560,000 viewers, the Belmont did 4,909,000, and the World Cup hauled in 1,209,000.

Coming in at third overall Saturday night in the 18-49 demographic, as well as third in the male 18-49, and tied for first in the male 12-34 demographic was the UFC 238 prelims. 75 percent of the program’s viewers were male. UFC 238 was also the number one searched item on Google that day, with more than one million searches. The show saw a 47 percent increase in viewers for last June’s PPV prelims, which was the UFC 225 PPV headlined by Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero.

As for the strongest major markets, the UFC pulled in a 0.8 rating in Dallas and an 0.7 in Philadelphia. The weakest major markets were Houston with an 0.2 and Chicago with an 0.3. The prelims also beat out Top Rank boxing, which aired on ESPN shortly after. The show was headlined by a WBO featherweight title bout between Oscar Valdez and Jason Sanchez, which did 799,000 viewers.

The last time the UFC did better numbers was for the UFC 235 PPV prelims in March. Jon Jones vs. Anthony Smith in a light heavyweight title fight headlined the show. The preliminary card for that event did 1.48 million viewers.

UFC strawweight Tatiana Suarez does not think Nina Ansaroff will have any clear advantages training with Amanda Nunes.

Suarez and Ansaroff will meet at UFC 238 this Saturday in Chicago, with the winner of the bout likely to be the next challenger for Jessica Andrade’s title.

Suarez is unbeaten and has won all four of her UFC bouts. Ansaroff, meanwhile, has won her last four as well, including a notable win over Claudia Gadelha.

The 33-year-old also has the benefit of training with her partner Nunes, who happens to be the women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion. But it doesn’t really mean much for Suarez.

“I remember talking about this not too long ago, and they were saying, ‘Do you think she has an advantage training with the champion?’” Suarez said at a recent media lunch (via MMA Junkie). “And was like, ‘Ya know what? I think when you’re around success, you learn the tools for success.

“But I’ve been around successful people and champions my entire life. I’ve developed these tools over time. I don’t need a current champion to know what a champion needs to do to be a champion.”

Suarez More Skillful

What will win this fight is skills, and Suarez believes she’s certainly the more skillful of the two. She is yet to truly be tested in the Octagon and her dominant wrestling has even given her a reputation of being the female Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“My skill really speaks for itself,” Suarez added. “It’s not really the power or anything like that. I wouldn’t say I have more strength than whoever – it’s just my skill level. I’ve been wrestling since I was 3 years old, so I hope I can pull something out that’s really great. I do think I’m strong.

“But I definitely feel like it’s a lot of skill, years of doing it, years of wrestling with different bodies and working with different bodies. I think I just have more experience in that field.”

After the UFC announced it’s upcoming return to Chicago, Illinois, a few women’s bouts have been added to the card.

One that stands out immediately is the return of top 115-pound prospect Tatina Suarez. The cancer survivor and former Olympic-hopeful is undefeated in her mixed martial arts (MMA) career thus far. In her last outing, she dominated former UFC women’s strawweight champion Carla Esparza with a third round TKO victory.

Now, according to a report from The Chicago Tribune, she’ll face Nina Ansaroff at the UFC 238 pay-per-view (PPV) from “The Windy City”. Ansaroff is surging at the moment with a four-fight win streak. She defeated former title challenger Claudia Gadelha via unanimous decision in her last contest at UFC 231 in December.

The winner of this bout could very well be next in line to challenge for the strap. Also, the report includes that a flyweight bout between Katlyn Chookagian and Joanne Calderwood will take place on the card. Chookagian had a three-fight win streak snapped by Jessica Eye in December. However, Calderwood is going strong off back-to-back victories.

Her latest being a unanimous decision win over Ariane Lipski at UFC on ESPN+ 1 this past January. In a very young and thin women’s flyweight division, every victory is crucial in hopes of securing a title opportunity. UFC 238 goes down live from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday, June 8, 2019.
