McGregor Poirier

Contrary to popular belief, striking coach Owen Roddy believes the UFC 257 headliner going into the latter rounds benefits Conor McGregor over Dustin Poirier.

McGregor faces Poirier in a lightweight rematch this Saturday at UFC 257 in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Having knocked out Poirier in their first meeting back in 2014, the general consensus seems to be that McGregor will get the knockout win again.

However, many observers feel if Poirier can drag the fight beyond the first two rounds, he has a much greater chance of winning. The belief, of course, is that McGregor tends to gas out as the fight goes on — evidenced by his first UFC defeat which came at the hands of Nate Diaz in 2016.

However, McGregor’s coach in Roddy believes the fight playing out that way actually plays into the hands of his pupil rather than Poirier.

“I doubt it’s going to go that far, but you’ll see,” Roddy told Submission Radio (via Middle Easy). “If it does go to (rounds) three, four, and five… I can’t see it going that far, but I think it will be a lot worse for Poirier if I’m being honest, because you don’t want Conor hitting you for 25 minutes, and he can set a pace, Conor.

“He is in phenomenal shape. He is in the best shape I’ve ever seen him in my life, physically and mentally. So I think it would be dangerous. I think Poirier would be taking a lot of dangerous blows if he managed to stay in there, but I still don’t see him staying in there.”

Of course, the goal for McGregor is to get the early knockout which is exactly what he has predicted. But it would certainly be interesting to see how he holds up in the late rounds — especially at 155 pounds.

Conor McGregor could be fighting on July 11, according to his long-time striking coach Owen Roddy.

The Irishman has previously said he wants 2020 to be a season with a minimum of three fights. However, he hasn’t fought or been booked to fight since his empathic comeback win in January in which he stopped Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone with a flurry of strikes inside one minute at UFC 246.

While nothing is official, Roddy believes the plan is for McGregor to fight on July 11 on a card to be determined. Although he is now worried that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic could potentially derail the plan. Speaking to Ariel Helwani on Instagram Live, he explained.

“Yeah, most definitely. That’s the plan, hopefully. Bring the UFC back to life as well, with all these shows being cancelled and stuff like that. I think a fight on July 11 would bring the UFC back to life and get everybody back on track. My fingers are crossed, and I’m sure the rest of the world fingers are crossed for that fight.”

If Conor McGregor does fight on July 11, Roddy believes Justin Gaethje is the front runner for the fight, although he insists, they’ll be happy to and are ready to face anyone.

“Anyone to be honest, but you know, maybe Gaethje. There is a lot of talks about Gaethje. I mean, he is an exciting fighter. I would like to see it, I’m sure you’d like to see it and the rest of the world would like to see it. Yeah, potentially that, but to be honest, anyone. I know Conor is ready to go, and everyone will be ready to go by the time July comes around.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Conor McGregor’s striking coach Owen Roddy doesn’t have a preference as to who his pupil faces next.

McGregor enjoyed a successful return to the Octagon when he outclassed Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds en route to a first-round TKO victory at UFC 246.

As for who he could face next, there are plenty of options. McGregor has already spoken of potentially stepping in should either Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson pull out of their lightweight title fight at UFC 249 in April.

There’s also Justin Gaethje as well as welterweight fights with Jorge Masvidal or Kamaru Usman. But for Roddy, it doesn’t really matter as he feels the new and motivated McGregor can beat anyone right now:

“I don’t really mind who it is,” Roddy said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “I think Conor going in motivated, enjoying the training, the way he is, can beat any of them. I really believe that.”

Roddy added that he wouldn’t mind if McGregor continued to compete at welterweight as he answered many questions against Cerrone.

However, the final choice is ultimately up to McGregor.

“People were questioning can he carry that weight and that power up into that 170 weight class,” Roddy added. “But I’ve never seen him so ferocious in there. The shots he was throwing when Cerrone hit the ground were ferocious. You know what, not many people on this Earth can take those shots.

“I think he’s got lots of options. It’s always Conor’s choice. Whoever motivates Conor the most is the fight he will take place.”

Who do you think McGregor will face next?

Donald Cerrone doesn’t have what it takes to defeat Conor McGregor. At least, according to the latter’s striking coach Owen Roddy.

Cerrone welcomes McGregor back to the Octagon when they meet in a welterweight bout in the UFC 246 main event on January 18 in Las Vegas. The recurring statement from the McGregor team is that the Irishman is enjoying his best camp yet and will be back better than ever.

And although Cerrone is still a tough opponent, Roddy doesn’t expect him to get past McGregor next week:

“He [Cerrone] is tricky, crafty, and well-versed everywhere, you know? He poses problems in every range,” Roddy told TheMacLife. “But everyone has holes in the game and it’s about finding those holes which we have and then capitalize on them.

“But Cerrone is phenomenal. He is a fan favorite for a reason because he brings it every time. And he is gonna bring it on fight night. But I just don’t think he has what it takes to beat Conor.”

Of course, it’s not really groundbreaking news when a coach believes his fighter will win an upcoming fight. But given that this is McGregor’s first in bout 15 months, there seems to be a real optimism surrounding his return this time.

Roddy claims McGregor is focused and up for it and because of that, he is expecting another knockout win for the former two-weight champion:

“The same as every other fight,” Roddy added of his prediction. “When Conor lands on people, it’s just a matter of time. It’s just a matter of how long they can weather the storm. It’s never that long so I see Conor landing clean and once he lands clean, it’s lights out.”
