2016 ended on a stretch of endlessly fascinating and exciting happenings.

Conor McGregor became the first dual champion in UFC history, Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson had an amazing fight and Amanda Nunes tore through Ronda Rousey like she was a six-year-old ripping through Christmas packages.

But because those fights were compressed at the end of the year, 2017 will get off to a bit of a slow start. Yair Rodriguez’s performance shined at UFC Fight Night 103, but the mood still ended up more somber because of how B.J. Penn looked in defeat.

Enter Bellator’s 170th edition.

The main event between Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen may not produce fireworks in the cage once the bell sounds, but the lead-up to it certainly has. Luckily for fans, the undercard to this event will bring it.

Bleacher Report’s Scott Harris and Nathan McCarter take a look at two of the hottest bouts early in this new year.

Nathan: Scott, there may not be a more enticing fight for the casual fan than Brennan Ward vs. Paul Daley.

Sure, their focus is largely on the UFC, but Ward-Daley is exactly the kind of fight they crave. It features aggressive, heavy-handed warriors who want nothing more than to see their opponents unconscious on the canvas.

Ward has won five of his last six and is coming off an 86-second KO of Saad Awad. Daley is known as “Semtex” for a reason. This is the type of fight that gets crowds off their feet and splashing beer on nearby fans from all the gesticulation.

Daley vs. Ward is the ultimate popcorn-movie summer blockbuster by Michael Bay. There’s not going to be huge implications from the bout, and it’ll lack technical proficiency at times, but it will surely be explosive.

I know you have your eye on yet another fight on the undercard that’s set to deliver. What do you have, Scott?

Scott: Forget Chael-Tito and the battle of the geriatrics. When Hisaki Kato vs. Ralek Gracie is the most interesting and potentially exciting bout on this card.

All Kato does is knock people out. In a 7-2 record, all seven wins came by TKO or KO. A natural southpaw, Kato and his Kudo karate background are difficult to prepare for, as are the extremely hard and hyper-aggressive strikes he tends to throw.

On Saturday the French-Japanese middleweight goes for a 3-1 record under the Bellator banner. His only loss? That would be to Melvin Manhoef, one of the most powerful striking berserkers this sport has ever known.

Kato won’t face that problem against Gracie. Yes, this is indeed the perfect striker-grappler matchup. No one who cares about sports would see the Gracie surname and think anything other than “jiu-jitsu.” Understandably so. If Gracie can take Kato down, it’s the Brazilian’s world.

The thing is, the 31-year-old Gracie hasn’t competed in pro MMA since 2010. He better hope Dorothy brought the oil can if he’s going to stand a chance against a striker as bloodthirsty as Kato.

Ultimately, this could be no-lose for fans. No matter where the fight goes, it’s hard not to see it playing out in a stoppage.

Nathan: These two fights alone are worth the price of admission or a flick of the remote over to Spike for the action. Also on the main card, Georgi Karakhanyan takes on Emmanuel Sanchez and Derek Campos battles Derek Anderson, both of which could supply some early fun, as well.

And we didn’t touch on some preliminary contests that will stream on the interwebs. Cody Bollinger always swings leather, but chiefly we missed Rebecca Ruth taking on Colleen Schneider.

Ortiz-Sonnen may grab the headline and the attention, but that’s what a main event is supposed to do. And if you’ve watched MMA over the years, you know that it isn’t likely to produce huge fireworks, but the undercard offers some of the best early action in all of MMA. It’d be a shame if you overlooked and missed what’s happening on Saturday.

Brennan Ward Feels he & Paul Daley Are ‘One of The Last Old-School Guys’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnjqLSASXPI

The co-main event of this Saturday night’s (Jan. 21) Bellator 170 card has the potential to be one of the most thrilling fights of the year. Welterweight heavy hitters Brennan Ward and Paul Daley will throw down inside The Forum in Inglewood, California.

“The Irish Bad Boy” gave “Semtex” praise during his appearance on MMAJunkie Radio. Ward appears to be anticipating this bout as much as the fans are.

“I’m super excited to fight Paul. We’re always boys when we’re at the fights. He’s one of the last old-school guys like me. We’re not out here, posting all our (expletive) workouts on Instagram and Facebook and (expletive). We handle our business, we get in the cage, and we throw it down. That’s why we’re the co-main event on the biggest fight (card) of the year.”

There are many words to describe the Ward vs. Daley match-up. Perhaps the last word you’d expect to hear is “boring.” Ward is expecting a barn burner.

“Fans know they’re going to tune in. Paul and I are incapable of putting on a boring fight, win or lose.”

After falling short to Alexander Shlemenko for the middleweight title and getting knocked out by Tamdan McCrory, Ward moved down to welterweight. “The Irish Bad Boy” had gone 4-0 since the move and finished all of his opponents in that stretch.

Ward suffered an upset submission loss at the hands of the now retired Evangelista Santos. The fight only lasted 30 seconds. He made a nice recovery by knocking out Saad Awad in the first round of his last outing.

Bellator 170’s headliner will feature former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz taking on Chael Sonnen. This will be Sonnen’s Bellator debut.

Also featured on the main card will be Ralek Gracie vs. Hisaki Kato, Georgi Karakhanyan vs. Emmanuel Sanchez, and Derek Campos vs. Derek Anderson.

Bellator 170’s Brennan Ward Plans on Taking Advantage of Spotlight

Brennan Ward knows his name might not generate the same kind of interest as Chael Sonnen, Tito Ortiz or even his Bellator 170 opponent, Paul Daley.

But Ward fully understands that the promotion has given him a chance to make a statement January 21 when he meets Daley in the co-main event.

“They don’t just line two guys up like Paul and I for no reason – on a card like this, that is probably the biggest card of the year and one of the biggest Bellator cards of all-time,” Ward said. “They’re putting our match up on there for a reason. They know fireworks are going to go off and they know this fight isn’t going the distance. Paul and I end fights, it’s what we do.”

Ward (14-4) has won five of his last six, including a November first round knockout of Saad Awad. He’s also finished Ken Hasegawa, Dennis Olson, Roger Carroll and Curtis Millender over the past year-plus.

Coker fielded post-card questions after Bellator 169 in Dublin, Ireland. When asked about the potential meeting of Rory MacDonald and welterweight king Douglas Lima, Coker espoused there is no competition (via Obviously Fight Talk):

“If you look at our 170 lbs weight class, they’re all killers in there. We’ve got a bunch of killers. We’ve got Koreshkov, Lima, you’ve got Rory MacDonald, you’ve got Paul Daley, you’ve got MVP.

“I’m telling you, we have got the best 170 pound division on the planet as far as I’m concerned.”

While Lima and MacDonald have agreed to fight each other,  it is worth noting that a bout will not be feasible for the next few months. The two fighters are still injured, and no official statement has yet to be released as to when the popular, ex-UFC fighter [MacDonald] will make his promotional debut.

A welterweight contest between Paul Daley and Brennan Ward has been added to Bellator 170, according to a report by ESPN.

Daley, who turns 34 early next year, had his five-fight win streak snapped by Douglas Lima in July. Lima went on to reclaim the Bellator welterweight title.

Ward has gone 5-1 over his last six, suffering only a submission loss to Evangelista Santos in April.

Bellator 170 takes place January 21 from The Forum and airs on Spike. In the main event, Tito Ortiz welcomes Chael Sonnen to the promotion in a light heavyweight contest.
