The UFC welterweight title will be on the line Saturday in Atlanta when the champion Ruthless Robbie Lawler defends his belt against The Chosen One Tyron Woodley.

Both men represent American Top Team, though Lawler trains in the epicenter of the gym in Coconut Creek, Florida, while Woodley moves around more during training.

Because of the different locations for training, Lawler has stated he doesn’t consider Woodley a teammate. The Chosen One’s view is a little different, per Sherdog’s Tristen Critchfield:

His thoughts on what a teammate is, it’s what he said: A lot of training side by side and getting guys ready.

But my idea of a person who’s affiliated with the American Top Team, I feel like I encompass all those things. I started out as an amateur with American Top Team. I was a coach for four of the top five or so of the American Top Teams.

His concept is that you should be there, down there, live there, train there and he’s allowed his own opinion of it, and no, I did not take it personal.

However you look at it, they won’t be teammates on Saturday. This short highlight promo tweeted by UFC President Dana White shows off both men’s power:

Here’s a look at the odds and ticket info for the event.

Other Notable Bouts

The card is not as stacked as most of the UFC’s pay-per-view events. It was originally supposed to feature UFC flyweight champion and pound-for-pound kingpin Demetrious Johnson against Wilson Reis.

An injury to Johnson forced him out and weakened the card. Reis is set to face newcomer Hector Sandoval, but that bout is now a part of the prelims rather than the co-main event.

The new co-main event will see 115-pound contender Rose Namajunas face Karolina Kowalkiewicz

The winner could be next in line for UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Namajunas has established a following with her distinct look, toughness and excellent ground game.

Kowalkiewicz will present an interesting challenge with her muay thai background, though.

If you’re looking for a sleeper bout, keep an eye out for Jorge Masvidal vs. Ross Pearson. These two guys are among the toughest outs in the UFC’s lightweight division.

They are both tough and skilled, but rarely come out on the winning side against other elite opponents. Against each other, it looks almost like a toss-up affair.

This could be Fight of the Night.

Woodley Will Upset Lawler

With good reason, Lawler is favored to successfully defend his welterweight title, but recent UFC action has been packed with upsets, and the next main event will be no different.

Lawler is as rugged and determined as they come, but Woodley is a bad matchup for him.

The Chosen One will be the first opponent Lawler has faced who is faster and more explosive. Woodley also has a high fight IQ.

He knows Lawler has an excellent chin and stand-up skills. He’s also aware the champion is tough to take down.

Look for Woodley to use his movement to outstrike Lawler. In the end, he’ll win a decision based on more effective striking and a few key takedowns.

UFC 201 Betting Preview: Lawler Odds-On Favorite to Defend Welterweight Title

Robbie Lawler (20-10) and Tyron Woodley (15-3) are two former Strikeforce fighters who have hit it big in the UFC.

On Saturday night at UFC 201 in Atlanta, the reigning champion Lawler will attempt to successfully defend his welterweight championship belt for the third time as a solid -210 favorite (bet $210 to win $100) against Woodley at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark.

Woodley is listed as a +170 underdog (bet $100 to win $170) on the UFC 201 betting lines and has had a long layoff despite not suffering any injuries since his last fight in January 2015. He was originally scheduled to face former welterweight champ Johny Hendricks at UFC 192 last October 3, but his opponent experienced serious issues with weight-cutting and had to pull out of the bout.

Woodley has won two in a row and four of five, with the lone loss happening two years ago at UFC 174 vs. Rory MacDonald via unanimous decision.

Lawler later fought MacDonald at UFC 189 last July 11 and scored a fifth-round TKO against him for his first title defense. He followed that up with a controversial split-decision win over Carlos Condit on January 2. Three of his past four wins have come by decision, with two of them seeing the judges split on the result.

Lawler’s last loss came via unanimous decision in favor of Hendricks for the vacant welterweight title belt at UFC 171 on March 15, 2014. Four of his previous six bouts have won Fight of the Night bonuses.

Flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson was supposed to face Wilson Reis in the co-main event but had to withdraw due to an undisclosed injury. Reis has remained on the UFC 201 card, though, and will be taking on Hector Sandoval as a heavy -300 favorite on the UFC odds, per Odds Shark.

The new co-main event is a women’s strawweight matchup between third-ranked Rose Namajunas (5-2) and fifth-ranked Karolina Kowalkiewicz (9-0). Despite having four fewer wins, Namajunas has more experience inside the Octagon as a former competitor on The Ultimate Fighter 20. She is a big -260 favorite, per Odds Shark, riding a three-bout winning streak, with Kowalkiewicz a +200 underdog.

Meanwhile, Kowalkiewicz is 2-0 in the UFC, and six of her previous seven fights took place in her home country of Poland.

UFC 201 takes place in Atlanta on Saturday, and part of the main card action is a thrilling welterweight matchup.

Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown step inside the Octagon in an attempt to get back in the win column and begin chasing down relevancy in the division. Both men have struggled as of late, but their career paths also feel like they are headed in opposite directions.

Ellenberger has suffered six losses since 2012, and four of those have come by KO/TKO or submission. His stock has dropped considerably over recent years. His long win since 2014 came at UFC 184 against Josh Koscheck. A loss to Brown could signal the end of the road.

As for Brown, he too has struggled but for different reasons. He has fought the elite of the elite in recent fights and come up just short against Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler. The only man to finish him in recent times is Demian Maia. Even after going 1-3 in his last four, Brown is still considered one of the best in the world.

The clash is pivotal for both men and will have divisional fallout.

Who can get it done on Saturday? Let’s break it down from head-to-toe and find out which welterweight gets their hand raised at UFC 201.

Robbie Lawler will defend his welterweight title against No. 1 contender Tyron Woodley as the main event of UFC 201 on Saturday.

The bout marks the third time Lawler will defend his strap since capturing the title from Johny Hendricks back in December 2014. Since that time, Lawler has bested Rory MacDonald in an instant classic and edged out a hotly contested decision over Carlos Condit.

Lawler’s continued success puts him on course to meet Woodley, who has hovered on the periphery of the welterweight title picture since he joined the UFC in 2013. The challenger’s opportunity comes after winning four of five contests. Most recently, Woodley eked out a decision over fellow contender Kelvin Gastelum.

So how will the title fight play out?

We’ll break down the matchup, see who has the edge where and examine how the contest might ultimately pan out.
