With a number of fighters testing positive for performance enhancing drugs and some calls for stricter drug testing within the sport of mixed martial arts, UFC president Dana White feels that under the current rules most of his fighters will end up under suspension but not for PED use.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, White told reporters that he thinks many fighters would test positive for marijuana use and therefore under most commission rules would be out for a year due to suspension.

“Forget about PEDs,” White said. “If we get into this system that we’re talking about where we would randomly test these guys, do you know how many guys would probably test positive for marijuana? It would be probably off the charts. “If you randomly test them and then [the results] came out, you’d get the exact same suspension [for using marijuana] as you do for using PEDs.”

“But [giving fighters similar suspensions for using both PEDs and marijuana] is just crazy,” White said after acknowledging the danger of PEDs in MMA. “It’s so easy to sit there and say, ‘Here’s what you should do. Here’s how you fix it,’ but there are so many flaws in the system, it’s just not that easy. It’s not just, ‘Hey, let’s sign up this company [to do testing].’ There’s a whole [expletive] of things that would come about.”

“Everybody thinks that if you did this random testing you’d catch so many guys on PEDs,” White said. “No. You’d catch more of the guys on marijuana. That’s where you’d really bust a lot of guys. … We have 475 guys under contract and probably 400 of them would be out with marijuana.”

Current UFC welterweight contender Nick Diaz is currently sitting out a year’s suspension for a positive test for marijuana metabolites following a decision loss to Carlos Condit last February at UFC 143. Also under suspensions is heavyweight Dave Herman who was handed a six month suspension following a submission loss to Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira last October at UFC 153.

Heavyweight Todd Duffee (7-2) will make his long awaited return to the Octagon this coming weekend after a two-and-a-half year absence.

Duffee was called on as a late replacement for Matt Mitrione who had been scheduled to face Phil De Fries at the upcoming UFC 155: Dos Santos vs. Velasquez II show.

The call back to the Octagon was a big surprise for the heavyweight who admits that he has yet to live up to his “own potential.”

“I thought I had another year and a half to go (to get a call from the UFC,” said Duffee. “I had a lot of problems getting fights, and it’s not from lack of trying and not from lack of trying to get things done. It was a real big surprise.”

“… I have not lived up to my own potential, there’s no question. And everybody that’s trained with me, everybody that’s seen me, they know that. I have a lot of potential and I owe it to my coaches and I owe it to my family and friends to see it through. I’ve had to make some crazy sacrifices from friends, family, all that stuff, but if I go out there and I perform, it’s gonna be worth it. I’ve gotten life experience that most small town kids from Raleigh, Illinois don’t get. That alone is pretty special to me. To get where I’m at now from where I was, a town of 351 people, it’s a pretty big deal, and I’m proud of that.”

Duffee offers more thoughts on his return in an interview with UFC.com.

The heavyweight is 1-2 in his last three bouts, with a 34-second TKO finish of former Bellator fighter Neil Grove this pas April with the Super Fight League. The losses came via knockout, a 19-second defeat at the hands of Alistair Overeem on Dec. 31, 2010 and a loss to Mike Russow at UFC 144 in May 2010.

UFC 155: Dos Santos vs. Velasquez II is scheduled for December 29, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Duffee vs. De Fries bout is scheduled to appear on the live Facebook prelim stream.

A scheduled Bellator Season Seven Tournament lightweight final between Marcin Held (15-2) and Dave ‘The Fugitive’ Jansen (18-2) was pulled from last nights Bellator 84 event due to an age restriction with the host venue.

The Venue at the Horseshoe Hammond Casino in Hammond is regulated by the state’s gaming commission which says that anyone entering the casino must be the age of 21 or older, Held is only 20-years old.

Bellator CEO Bjron Rebney noted during the post fight press conference that he had thought all the arrangements had been made allowing Held to compete at The Venue, but was only told a few hours before the match that he would not be allowed in.

“We thought we had done everything necessary to ensure that in this facility, specifically, which has a 21-and-under rule relative to casino guests on the floor, that we’d covered all the bases and made a series of disclosures relative to his age being 20,” Rebney said. “(We) literally just found ourselves in a position where there was a higher authority here from a gaming-commission perspective that was disallowing what had previously been allowed.”

“We’ll dig down and figure out what the situation is, and I guess in the future make sure we don’t schedule any fights for a facility that has an under-21 policy even if we’re following the process and think we’re doing everything right,” he said.

The two Season Seven finalists will meet, both fighters will be scheduled to meet at an upcoming Season Eight event and will see their match air in front of a bigger audience with the impending move from MTV2 to Spike TV in the New Year.

Bellator Season Seven Featherweight Final Between Martinez vs. Shamhalaev Moved To Season Eight

Rad Martinez

After food poisoning fell Bellator Season Seven Featherweight finalist Shahbulat Shamhalaev (11-1-1), the promotion had hoped to rebook his bout with fellow finalist Rad Martinez (14-2) for this Friday’s Bellator 84 show but now it appears that both fighters will meet next year at a Season Eight event.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney explained the reasoning behind the rescheduling during a conference call.

Martinez is the primary care provider for his severely brain damaged father, who was injured following a car accident, and because of this has family obligations that prevent him from competing this Friday.

“I spoke too soon at the show last Friday,” Rebney said. “Rad is saddled with responsibilities that are admirable. None of us can probably understand the depth and the level of what he’s got to deal with. Post-fight, I talked to Rad and got he and his brother on the phone. We just sat down and talked for a while. Literally, Rad is not in a position to be able to fight – not because he’s not ready, not because he’s not in incredible shape, not because he didn’t prepare but simply because he’s got to take care of his dad.

“Between his brother Levi and Rad, that is an epic requirement, an epic responsibility. Their tending to him is an admirable on a level that’s hard to talk about, and Levi was going to be out of town, and there literally is nobody else that can care for his father the way his dad needs to be taken care of, so he’s not going to be able to make it this Friday.”

Bellator’s Season Eight kicks off on January 17 for twelve weeks with it’s new broadcast partner Spike TV. Rebney did not offer a date for the featherweight final.

Rory MacDonald Wants To Avenge Loss To Carlos Condit, Has No Interest In Ever Facing Teammate GSP

Rory MacDonald

Anytime a fighter pulls off a win the media are quick to ask “who’s next?” Last night it was no different following Rory MacDonald’s (14-1) one sided victory over BJ Penn at UFC on FOX 5.

In the past MacDonald has been reserved when it came to answering questions like that but this time the young Canadian welterweight was quick to call out the only fighter to beat him inside the cage, Carlos Condit.

The two squared off over two-years ago at UFC 115 in Vancouver, BC and saw MacDonald control the first two rounds. Condit would make an aggressive effort in the third catching his opponent in the final seconds finishing things with seven seconds on the clock via TKO.

“I was just laying there getting beaten on, my face looked like I was the guy from “The Goonies” after. I was embarrassed, I was embarrassed about my performance and how I held myself.”

“It did a lot of damage and I don’t think I’ve been the same person since, so I want to get that back.”

MacDonald also noted that he would like to face Condit in the spring, likely at the next Canadian event.

Condit is coming off a title unification loss to Georges St-Pierre having lost by decision just a few weeks ago in Montreal at UFC 154.

The media were quick to ask MacDonald if he would ever fight his Tri-Star teammate GSP for the title.

“I don’t know I’m not there yet, so I’ll cross that bridge when I get there, but I don’t feel that I need to fight Georges. I don’t think it’s going to happen. It won’t happen. Me and him are friends.

“He’s done a lot for me, and I’m very grateful for it. I’m not going to stab him in the back, and I don’t want to wreck my opportunity training at Tri-star. They’ve done a lot of things for me. So I don’t know, we’ll see what happens. There are a lot of fights for me right now.”
