If Nick Diaz Earns A Decisive Victory At UFC 137, Coach Cesar Gracie Will Ask For George St-Pierre Next

With all of the strange goings on over the past month, with former Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz being pulled from his title fight with UFC title holder Georges St-Pierre, then the promotion of Diaz versus BJ Penn to the main event of UFC 137, it’s been an emotional roller coaster ride for everyone involved.

Once St-Pierre has recovered from injury, he’ll meet Carlos Condit, Penn’s original opponent, sometime next year.

Not if coach and trainer Cesar Gracie has his way.

On Monday, as a guest on The MMA Hour (@MMAFighting.com) Gracie told host Ariel Helwani that if Diaz earns a decisive victory over Penn he’ll petition UFC President Dana White for the next title shot over Condit.

“This is the UFC so there’s always that chance. There’s no question about it that I will ask for that if Nick has a tremendous performance and he can finish BJ, I would ask for that. But the biggest thing is if the fans want it. If the fans all ask for that, Dana [White] is a smart guy. He knows the sport is about the fans. So who knows?”

It is certainly an intriguing idea and one that fans could get behind should Diaz earn a solid win over Penn this coming Saturday night.

The big issues being one, not only does Diaz have to beat Penn but he’s got to do it in a big way, and two, Condit is sure to raise a sh**storm should he have his title shot taken away.

UFC 137 is scheduled to take place on Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada with the Diaz vs. Penn bout taking place on the live pay-per-view card this Saturday night.

‘Big Country’ Nelson Jokes About Training In A Cemetary To Ready For ‘Cro Cop’

Fans of PRIDE champ Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovi? are familiar with his quote “Right leg, hospital; left leg, cemetery” from his run at the PRIDE 2006 Open-Weight Grand Prix, in which he won by stopping Wanderlei Silva and Josh Barnett on the same night.

Filipovi? and season ten “TUF” winner Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson (15-6) are both set to meet at the end of this month (October 29) on the main card of UFC 129 in Las Vegas.

Nelson is preparing to meet the fighter who won the PRIDE tournament, and not the man fighting on the last bout of his contract, as well as a two fight losing skid. Joking with MMAFighting.com, ‘Big Country’ referenced the ‘Cro Cop’ quote to grab a laugh talking about training in a cemetery for this fight.

“I’ve just been working out in the cemetery a lot. I’ve got to get ready for the left kick. I want to see what it’s like…”

“It’s so cliche, you know. You have to beat a legend to be a legend. But I think just to fight Cro Cop, period, is something that, as a fighter, you just want to do,” Nelson said. “You want to be able to say, hey, I competed with some of the best of the world.”

Nelson himself is also on a two-fight losing streak, having lost to Frank Mir at UFC 130 and to Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 in a No. 1 contender match.

Kenny Florian Headed Back To 155 Lbs After Loss For UFC Bantamweight Title

After taking a shot at the UFC featherweight title, Kenny Florian (14-6) is headed back to lightweight after just two matches at 145 lbs.

Florian dropped to bantamweight after losing a No. 1 contenders bout at lightweight to Gray Maynard at UFC 118 in August of 2010. It would be a full nine-months before Florian would debut at 145 lbs, facing Diego Nunes at UFC 131 last June. Florian would earn a decisive unanimous decision victory earning him a shot at the UFC bantamweight title.

Florian was given his shot earlier this month at UFC 136 against champ Jose Aldo. Despite his best efforts, UFC gold was again out of ‘Ken-Flo’s’ reach, losing a unanimous decision to Aldo in the end.

With that loss, the Massachusetts fighter took some time to figure out his next move, telling The Boston Herald that he was moving back to 155 lbs.

“I still love this sport tremendously and still want to be a part of it. I know myself, and it’s not even just being competitive, but it’s just being there, learning and competing. There’s still very much a fire burning there so I’m going to do it…”

“I didn’t get in this to be second-best, of course. But at the same time, not everybody can be a champion,” Florian said. “I’m just going to go back to 155, work my way up, take it one fight at a time and see where it puts me.

“I think there’s exciting fights out there for me, there’s still challenges out there for me, there’s still things I’d like to try to improve on and that’s the main thing. I don’t necessarily have the title in my eyes, but I do have my own personal goals as far as the technical level that I want to get to.”

Ross Pearson Looking For Bigger Opportunities In The UFC’s 145-Pound Division

Former “The Ultimate Fighter” season 9 winner Ross ‘The Real Deal’ Pearson (12-5) is looking to drop ten-pounds for his next fight by moving down to the featherweight division.

Fighting as a lightweight in the UFC, Pearson is a respectable 4-2 in the 155 lbs division but is just 1-2 in his last three matches.

In a recent interview, Pearson talked about making the move to featherweight feeling that he’d be able to break into the top 10 easily, and earn himself a shot at the belt with a few solid victories.

“You hear Dana saying all the time that these athletes in the sport have got a small window of opportunity, and I just feel like I fit in well in the 145-pound division,” explained Pearson when we spoke last week after the former winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” finished his afternoon training session at Alliance MMA in San Diego.

“I see myself shooting straight into the top 10 — if not the top five — of the division, and pushing for a title shot right away. I feel like I’m 27 years old now, and I’m wanting big fights, big opportunities. I’m not in this sport because I just want to fight this guy, fight that guy; I want to be the best…”

“I’ve let the UFC know that I would like to fight New Year’s Eve in Vegas at 145, but as of right now, I haven’t heard anything back in terms of an opponent,” he said. “That’s when I’d be prepared and ready to go, and I’d have a full, solid camp behind me.”

“I’m not dropping down to 145 because I don’t think I can make a run at 155; I’m dropping down to ’45 because of the window of opportunity, and I think I will be faster making a run for the title at ’45.”

Bellator Fighting Championships 115 lb women’s champion Zoila ‘Warrior Princess’ Gurgel (11-1) has suffered a torn ACL forcing her out of her non-title fight with Carina Damm at the upcoming Bellator 57 event.

The ‘Warrior Princess’ took to Twitter (@ZoilaGurgel) to talk about the injury.

“To every1 wondering what the hell I’m talking about, I just took an MRI of my knee yesterday & results came back, I completely tore my ACL. If it was up to me, I still was planning on fighting. I am able to still move forward & box & I am very confident in that & my cardio but Doctor & coaches say “No way in hell!” So it’s off to surgery hopefully soon & back to the training asap. Like I said, it’s God’s will. So until i go under the knife, I’ll be at the school @JG_MMA doing cardio & everything I possible can til I can’t feel my legs or body so by the time it’s time for surgery I’ll want to be resting a bit. I know this will be difficult, never been off my legs for more thn a few days, but I’m sure w/good people & God by my side, I’ll get thru it & shine once again in what I love to do under those big lights. Thank you everyone for all your love and support! 🙂 your all so amazing!”

Gurgel has won six straight bouts, which includes winning the Bellator Season 3 Women’s 115 lb Tournament to become the promotions first champion in that weight class. She has yet to defend the title, but earned a unanimous decision over Karina Hallinan at Bellator 35 in a non-title bout at 125 lbs. That is the same weight class that she had been scheduled to face Carina Damm at on November 12.

Former UFC middleweight champ Rich ‘Ace’ Franklin (28-6, 1NC) is on the sidelines recovering from surgery to repair some damage to his shoulder.

Having gone under the knife just one week ago, ‘Ace’ is already fired up and “hungry” to return to training for his next fight. The former champ told MMAjunkie.com that he’s hoping to make his return next summer.

“Now that I’m injured and can’t do things, it’s fired me up. When you’re stopped from doing something, that’s when you’re most hungry for it.”

“I’m looking at three to four months before fight training, but at that point, it’ll still be light training,” he said. “Optimistically, I’m looking at a fight in May or June. So let’s say sometime in the summer of next year.”

Franklin was last in action this past February, losing a unanimous decision to Forrest Griffin at UFC 126. The former 185 lb title holder has traded wins for losses over his six fights beginning with a win over Matt Hamill at UFC 88 and ending with the loss to Griffin. In that time frame he’s fought as a light heavyweight three times and taken two 195 lb catchweight bouts.
