Former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin (12-2) is reporting that he will undergo back surgery once again and is hoping to be back early next summer.

Carwin posted the notice on his homepage at Shane-Carwin.com on Saturday, saying his “body locked up during training” and that his doctor gave him the option of retiring, or having surgery if he wished to continue with his mixed martial arts career.

As I ramped up my training for UFC 141 my body locked up during training. It wasn’t like the Lesnar fight but my back just tightened up and I froze. I scheduled an MRI and the results showed that my disc in my lower back is into the nerves . My doctor gave me two options; retire and I could probably go on for a few years without surgery or I could undergo surgery and continue my career.

The decision was easy. I have unfinished business. The UFC had me lined up to face one of the best in the world and I am confident I have everything I need to be a Champion. I am scheduling surgery and I hope to return to the Octagon by spring or summer 2012.

Carwin was last in the Octagon in June, having lost a No. 1 contender bout against Junior dos Santos in the headliner for UFC 131.

The heavyweight went under the knife last November to relieve pain in his back and neck.

Henderson Coach Planning To “Suprise” ‘Shogun’ Rua At UFC 139

Former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion Dan ‘Hendo’ Henderson (28-8) is set to make his return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship next month when he meets former UFC champ Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua in the main event of UFC 139.

Henderson re-signed with the UFC after finishing mma icon Fedor Emelianenko in July by first round knockout, and will meet Rua in a UFC light heavyweight title eliminator match.

One of those helping Henderson prepare for that fight is coach Gustavo Pugliese, who feels that despite the ability of both fighters to finish the fight with their hands, knows that preparing his fighter for five rounds is the ultimate goal. Still though, he knows that Henderson will always go for the knockout and both are working on a “surprise” for ‘Shogun’ when the two meet.

What are your expectations for this fight?
I’m hoping it’s an explosive fight. Both have the ability to finish it via knockout, but it’s a five rounds bout, so we don’t have to rush into it. We don’t wanna get into a situation where Dan is tired for not having got his coups right. So, we’ll take our time during this fight.

Henderson comes from great knockout. Is his game plan to go for the knockout against Shogun?
Of course the goal is always the knockout. It’s what Dan is up to, he’s always going for the knockout, but we need to know when to attack and when to counterattack.

What is your work with Dan for this fight?
We won’t change Hendo’s style, but we’re working in some details that might surprise Shogun. It ain’t no secret the way Henderson finishes his fights, so my job, along with (Daniel) Woirin, will be to prepare him correctly to use his strongest weapon, his right hand. It becomes dangerous when we use the kicks and his left hands at a time, doing different combinations. So we’ll make him confuse so he forgets about his right hand completely. Obviously, Dan will use his Wrestling when on the clinch, it’ll be important to use different weapons to get Shogun tired.

Cris ‘Cyborg’ Excited To Fight Under Zuffa Banner, Says Women’s MMA Here To Stay Even If It’s Under A Different Company

There had been some issues between Strikeforce and Women’s Featherweight champ Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos (10-1) over renewing her contract. After sitting a year, and a change in ownership, the new Zuffa owned Strikeforce promotion was able to come to terms with the Brazilian champ, and have her returning in December.

‘Cyborg’ is scheduled to meet Japanese fighter Hiroko Yamanaka on December 17 at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California as part of the Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal event.

In a recent interview with Tatame.com, Santos discussed her return to the cage under Zuffa as well as her thoughts on what the future of women’s mma looks like.

It’ll be your first fight since UFC purchased Strikeforce. What do you think will be different?
I guess that, if there’s something, it’s a better thing. UFC is the biggest MMA event of all, so I’m happy about this fight I’ll be doing in December. It’s a great chance for me, I’ll show my work and put on a good show, open the doors to women. The name’s changed, but it doesn’t matter because I already used to take it seriously, I used to pour my heart out to win. Now the boss has changed, but I’ll keep doing what I used to do before.

People talk about Strikeforce closes next year, especially now UFC is taking the good athletes from it. What do you think they’ll do about the female divisions?
I guess female MMA won’t be extinct. I don’t know if we’ll fight in UFC or not. Everybody’s dream is that it keeps opened, but I guess MMA won’t end if UFC doesn’t want us. Girls will keep on fighting it, training and then will come up an event that will want to give us that chance. It’s on the hands of God and the producers to keep on believing in female MMA, my role is to do what I always do: put on a good show, representing women and fight better and better each time. But I believe that women are getting better and putting on good shows.

Jose Aldo Willing To Face Frankie Edgar…..At Featherweight

With the dominance of certain fighters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship promotion such as Anderson Silva, Georges St-Pierre, Jon Jones and featherweight champ Jose Aldo (20-1), “Super Fights” are always on the minds of fight fans everywhere.

One in particular that has come up, especially after last weekends UFC 136 title defenses by Aldo and lightweight champ Frankie Edgar, is getting them both into the Octagon against one another. It’s something UFC President Dana White would like to see whether it be Aldo moving up to 155 lbs, or Edgar moving down to 145 lbs.

For the featherweight champ, Aldo feels that moving up in weight isn’t an option as he has plenty to do at featherweight, but would be more than willing to fight Edgar IF he dropped down to 145 lbs.

Speaking to Tatame.com, this is what Aldo had to say about a possible “Super Fight” with Edgar:

On the press conference after the fight, Dana White said he wants to see Frankie Edgar, lightweight champion, dropping to the featherweight and fighting you. How would it be Aldo vs. Edgar?
Man, I think it’s great. Frankie is the lightweight champion, so, if he moves down, no problem. Just like Kenny did and others are doing… To me it’s ok. I’ll always fight the guys they point out for me to fight.

Do you consider going the other way around, moving up, or this thing about you having difficulties to cut weight is bullshit?
Move up is bullshit. If someone’s deciding it someday, it’s Pederneiras.

Bellator Season Five Welterweight Finalist Douglas Lima Won’t Fear Opponent Ben Saunders

Having put in a solid performance last Saturday night (October 8, 2011) by earning a second round knockout victory over Chris Lozano, Bellator Season Five Welterweight Tournament finalist Douglas ‘The Phenom’ Lima (20-4) faces an even tougher test when he meets Ben ‘Killa B’ Saunders in the finals.

Both fighters earned spectacular victories at Bellator 53 in Oklahoma last weekend, with Lima earning the KO and Saunders earning an impressive submission win over over an Luis Santos, a fighter with 50 career wins to his name.

Now that both fighters are on a collision course to meet for a shot at $100,000 and the Bellator title, it’s time for both men to begin their preparations.

Having watched Saunders dominate Santos after his win, Lima told Tatame.com that he won’t “fear” anything Saunders will bring into the cage with him when they finally meet.

“I know Ben is a tough athlete. He’s slim and know how to use his knees on the clinch and also has a guard that is hard to break into, but nothing to be afraid of.”

“Not only striking, but also the ground game. We’ve prepared ourselves to anything, I’m pretty confident to fight him standing up or on the ground. Nowadays we gotta be ready for everything. I really want to do a good fight. Jucão (Roan Carneiro) and my training partners are studying his game. I’ll be a lot prepared. I’ll bring this GP title home for sure”.

Bellator Fighting Championships bantamweight champion Zach ‘Fun Size’ Makovsky (13-2) is watching the Season Five Bantamweight Tournament with great interest, trying to determine which of the four remaining fighters will face him for his title.

This seasons semi-finalists include Alexis Vila, Eduardo Dantas, Marcos Galvao, and Ed West who all won their respective bouts last month at Bellator 51.

Despite his thoughts on who his future opponent may be, Makovsky has his fight to worry about, meeting Ryan Roberts this weekend in Atlantic City, New Jersey in a “Super Fight” at Bellator 54.

Speaking to MMAMania.com, ‘Fun Size’ was asked about the season five tournament semi-finalists, noting his surprise at who moved on after the first round.

What did you think of these four bantamweight winners that came out of the quarterfinals at Bellator 51?
Zach Makovsky: I think there were a couple things that surprised me and a couple things I expected. I was surprised by the way the Dantas – Wilson Reis fight went. I really felt Wilson had the style to beat Dantas. I mean, I admittedly haven’t seen too much of Dantas but I thought Wilson would have the ability to take him down. I didn’t think he’d be able to submit him or anything like that but I thought that he would definitely be able to control the action on the ground. Wilson went for a takedown but didn’t really repeatedly try to take him down. It looked like he wanted to strike a little more which I really don’t think is his strength especially against a taller, solid striker like Dantas. It didn’t work out for him. Dantas looked good. Very long, crisp, clean strikes. He was very composed for his first fight in Bellator and for only being 22 years old so I was impressed with him.

I was obviously impressed with Vila’s power. It’s hard to judge a guy on a one minute fight but he came at Warren and connected, hurt him earlier and then caught him with that big hook while Warren was kinda reaching out, trying to grab ahold of him. Vila’s clearly got some power. He’s clearly a guy you do not want to let hit you cleanly but I think it’s hard to judge him because we haven’t seen too much of him. I think Warren’s the first really credentialed fighter that he’s fought so I’d really like to see more of Vila but he did look very good.

I thought Ed West looked good too. He definitely played his style of game. I think him and Dantas should be really interesting. Vila should have a good chance to beat Galvao because I think Galvao will have trouble getting it to ground and Vila hits harder in the stand-up. I think whoever wins out of Dantas or West could both give Vila problems in the finals.
