The push to make UFC Fight Pass an important all-digital service continues, as the promotion announced on Friday that Rafael dos Anjos will defend his lightweight title against Eddie Alvarez this July.

Dos Anjos vs. Alvarez will air on Fight Pass July 7 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The event will likely be titled UFC Fight Night 90.

The 31-year-old dos Anjos (25-7) earned his fifth consecutive victory this past December when he finished Donald Cerrone in just 66 seconds. It marked his first title defense, as he was expected to do the same vs. Conor McGregor earlier this year before a foot injury scrapped the contest.

Dos Anjos won the belt in 2015 vs. Anthony Pettis and has defeated the likes of Nate Diaz, Benson Henderson and Jason High since a 2014 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Alvarez (27-4) is a former Bellator champion who has picked up a pair of split decisions over Pettis and Gilbert Melendez since losing to Cerrone in his UFC debut two years ago. Overall, he is 5-1 over his last six fights, having also defeated Michael Chandler, Patricky “Pitbull” Freire and Shinya Aoki inside the Bellator cage.

The promotion will hold three events in three days during “International Fight Week,” as The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale and UFC 200 are scheduled for Friday and Saturday of that week.

Undefeated UFC lightweight prospect Khabib Nurmagomedov has long been pegged for great things in the world’s largest proving ground for martial artists. It looked briefly as though his hopes were wavering during his unfortunate spree of injuries, but thankfully the Sambo specialist had guys like Dominick Cruz to inspire him during that dark patch. Having been out of action for two years since his dominant win over current lightweight boss Rafael dos Anjos in 2014, ‘The Eagle’ was set to finally face his rival Tony Ferguson this weekend.

Then in a sad twist of fate, ‘El Cucuy’ pulled out injured and Nurmagomedov was instead slated to face Darrell Horcher at UFC on FOX 19. Since that time Ferguson had asked ‘The Eagle’ to wait and fight him in May, which didn’t appeal to Nrumagomedov, as he told MMAFighting.com yesterday:

“He’s running, that’s why my face isn’t on the poster any more. I’m here, he called me out, and now he pulled out. He asked me to wait, I can’t wait two more months, I trained to fight here. My plan is to fight in April and September, I can’t let Ferguson make my plans, Tony can’t talk about me, when you pull out you have to stay quiet. I didn’t ask Tony to wait when the UFC put him against Edson Barboza, this is stupid.”

“He’s injured, he pulled out, I’m here, where is Tony? I have to focus on Horcher, please forget about Tony. I like this atmosphere, I’ve finally come back.”

In terms of competition elsewhere in the UFC lightweight division, Nurmagomedov is interested in facing dos Anjos again although he says he proved his point the last time they fought, then the conversation turns to Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz…

See who could be fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov on April 16…

News broke late last night that once again Khabib Nurmagomedov’s return had been hindered by injury, but this time it was not his own. Tony Ferguson, originally scheduled to face ‘The Eagle’ on April 16’s UFC on FOX 19 card, withdrew from the bout with just 11 days notice. Nurmagomedov has been out of action for two years now, his last performance a dominant win over current lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos, and now the 22-0 Sambo master is looking for a replacement for ‘El Cucuy.’

We saw that Donald Cerrone threw his name in the mix, but with his own fight against Patrick Cote also at risk, it’s possible the UFC might look elsewhere. Luckily for the matchmakers, there’s been a number of fighters making themselves available for Nurmagomedov, but not all of them for April 16.

UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos claims he has unfinished business with ‘The Eagle,’ but his old foe wasn’t too co-operative when the Brazilian came knocking:

That’s gonna sting.

So who else is in the mix for the top lightweight contender to face this month?

Dos Anjos Calls McGregor A “Coward” For Not Defending His Title At UFC 200

When Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz II was announced as the main event for UFC 200 in an immediate welterweight rematch of their UFC 196 fight, the MMA community was split in terms of their reaction to the news. Current UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos, however, has made his opinion very clear.

Dos Anjos, who was originally scheduled to defend his 155-pound title against 145-pound champion Conor McGregor at UFC 196, took to social media shortly after the announcement was made regarding the McGregor-Diaz II fight headlining the landmark UFC 200 event.

According to Dos Anjos, “The Notorious” one is a “coward” for taking the Diaz rematch instead of defending his title against any of the challengers available in the 145-pound division.

As noted, UFC also announced Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo in an interim featherweight title fight as one of the co-main events for their big UFC 200 show on July 9th.

“[I] feel bad for Aldo and Edgar,” wrote Dos Anjos. “After UFC 200, Conor [will] find another fight in a different division so he can keep his belt for [a little] longer.” Dos Anjos closed with a hashtag directed at McGregor that simply read, “#coward.”

UFC 200: Diaz vs. McGregor II takes place on Saturday, July 9, 2016 from the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Make sure to join MMANews.com on 7/9 for the best UFC 200 live results coverage on the web!
