Former Bellator middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi is hungry to regain his title.

The former UFC star lost his middleweight strap after getting outpointed by Rafael Lovato Jr. back in June. He has since rebounded with a split decision win over Lyoto Machida.

And with the news that Lovato is dealing with a brain condition that will keep him on the sidelines indefinitely, Mousasi could find himself challenging for the title again.

Although Lovato has not vacated his title or been stripped, it could very well be a possibility if he is unable to fight in the near future. And Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima recently expressed his interest in challenging Mousasi for a vacant title.

That sounds fine by Mousasi, who is also open to facing John Salter for a potential vacant belt.

“Bellator, send me the next victim. I’m hungry,” Mousasi tweeted. “@JohnSalter_mma or @PhenomLima, I am down for either. @BellatorMMA@MikeKoganMMA@ScottCoker.”

A Mousasi vs. Lima fight would be a very intriguing contest and certainly one of the biggest fights Bellator would be able to put out.

We’ll just have to see if that’s something Bellator president Scott Coker is also interested in, especially after seeing Mousasi dominate then welterweight champion Rory MacDonald back in 2018.

What do you think of a Mousasi vs. Lima matchup?

Bellator middleweight champion Rafael Lovato Jr is fighting a rare brain condition that could bring on his premature retirement from the sport. The Brazilian hasn’t fought since picking up the title against Gegard Mousasi in June 2019. Speaking to Joe Rogan he explained why he has been out of the cage for so long and why he is unlikely to fight again anytime soon, he said.

“I could sense something was going on. The radiologist, with really no candor or an easy or soft way of saying it, was like, ‘Dude, have you seen your brain before? There’s some stuff in here you need to see.’ He pulls me into the room and shows me on the screen, pointing out what looked like little balls. It looked like something was wrong – not a normal scan. But I don’t know – like shades of discoloration. You could see that it wasn’t normal. He didn’t even know what it was at the time.

“I go back
and he tells me that he did some research and he believes I have a disease
called cavernoma. He hits me with that. I had no idea what cavernoma was. He
said, ‘Look, I’m not signing this paper. You need to go see a specialist and
get looked at. But as far as I know, you should not fight. You should not be
fighting.’”

Whilst doctors in Europe have ruled Lovato Jr out of fighting, others in Brazil see no problem with it. The 36-year-old relayed his conversation with medical staff in his homeland, he said.

“There is no studies that say getting hit in your head is going to make your cavernoma worse or cause you to bleed and something is going to happen, You could bleed, you could be oozing blood at any point in time, little by little. It could become an issue at some point in time. But there is no treatment. We’re not going to do surgery. There’s nothing that’s going to happen until you have symptoms, until you show signs. Because I can’t find any studies that say getting hit in the head is going to make it worse, and because you a normal, healthy, functioning person at this point, I think it’s fine for you to fight. You should continuing doing what you do until it becomes a problem. And if it does become a problem, we’ll go in there and take it out.”

After beating Lyoto Machida at Bellator 228, Gegard Mousasi is looking to run things back with Rafael Lovato Jr.

The two fought back at Bellator 223 in London where it was Lovato Jr. who edged out a decision win to become the new middleweight champion. It was a disappointing loss for Mousasi, especially because he knows he can beat Lovato Jr.

Now, after beating Machida he called for the rematch and made a very interesting claim. If he can not beat and finish Lovato Jr., he will retire from the sport.

“Next fight I’m going to kill him. I swear to God that if I don’t knock him out, I don’t count it as a victory,” Mousasi said at the Bellator 228 post-fight news conference (h/t MMA Junkie).

“Because I know what I can do, and he will die, literally. We’ll see. I will knock him out 100 percent. And if I don’t, I will retire. I promise you, I am not kidding, because I’m not trying to sell a fight. I don’t know what I can do. Next time will be extra special, and I will be extra special boy.”

Not only does he plan to knock him out, Mousasi believes Lovato Jr. is still using steroids – alleging his former opponent is using “monkey steroids.”

That guy looked like a horse,” Mousasi said. “You guys are reporters, but you don’t even report on that. You can see a picture of him. He looks like a muscular [at] 35. Take a picture, put it next to each other, it’s day and night difference. It’s not even a little bit steroids; it’s like monkey steroids. You guys can check it out.”

Mousasi didn’t stop there either.

“He looked twice as big at the weigh-ins. His nipples were hard like a woman,” Mousasi said. “I’m not kidding. You guys watch it. I’m not trying to be funny, his nipples were twice as … he could have given milk to babies. I’m in a good mood. Maybe I shouldn’t talk that much, yeah.”

It now seems the feud is there for Bellator to run the fight back later this year or early 2020.

What do you make of Mousasi’s comments about Lovato allegedly using steroids?
