Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champ, Rashad Evans recently talked about his worst weight-cutting mistake.

Weight cutting is a big part of Mixed Martial Arts. As the sport has progressed, weight cutting has become more and more of a science. But it wasn’t always like that, especially back in the day when Rashad Evans was competing. Back then, it was more of a trial-and-error type of thing where you slowly honed in on what worked for you and what didn’t. It sounds like Rashad’s coach, Greg Jackson, had already seen or made the same mistake prior as he tried to warn Rashad Evans beforehand.

Take a listen to Rashad Evan’s worst weight-cutting mistake.

“He [Greg Jackson] said okay cool, just don’t jump in the pool. I was like why, he said don’t jump in the pool you’ll gain the weight back. “I’m like nah, no way. So, lo and behold, I didn’t believe him, I jumped in the pool, and I gained a pound and a half, bro. Your body just sucks it up. It was hard, I was crying. I was in the room crying, Greg was like see, I told you!”

Rashad Evans was in tears from his weight-cutting blunder

We can only imagine how brutal that feeling must be as fighters often say that the last pound and a half is the hardest to lose. Evans not only lost it once but had to do it again. No wonder he was on the verge of tears.

However, one thing that must have helped Evans was that he was a natural Light Heavyweight. He started his UFC career winning the Ultimate Fighter Heavyweight edition, before dropping down a weight class. So, that cut to 205 must not have been too bad. Also, it seems as if Evans was a weight-cutting pro by the end of his UFC run as he competed as low as 185 pounds.

Former light-heavyweight champion, Rashad Evans praises teammate turned opponent, Jon Jones for changing up his training situation, practicing alongside the likes of Henry Cejudo.

Rashad Evans and Jon Jones shared an intense feud when contemporaries during one of the most competitive eras in the light-heavyweight division. They once shared the mats at JacksonWink but things turned soured forcing Evans to move camps, but the once bitter rivalry has seemed to simmer since Evans’s initial retirement.

When discussing Jones’ comeback, Evans had high praise for the former champion, crediting him for training out with his normal coaching setup.

“I do like him training with ‘Triple C,’ Evans began. “I like it because he’s in a new environment and he’s being challenged with new training activities. Jiri Prochazka’s out there and a couple different training partners. He even trained with some high level Olympic wrestlers which is really going to bring his wrestling to another level.

“And it’s also going to add another element to the heavyweight game that he’s going to have to implement, being able to grapple. So I like him training there and getting out of the box in Albuquerque is not a bad thing at all. Sometimes you can be a big fish in a small pond and you gotta go out there and expand your horizons.”

Although Evans is confident of Jones’ future at heavyweight, he did warn ‘Bones’ that should he meet a younger and fresher fighter such as Tom Aspinall, he may be found wanting.

“Stipe [Miocic] would be a great fight for [Jones] to come into,” Evans said. “I think that he can’t go in there with somebody, well, he can… But I would rather see him go in there against somebody who has been not as active as he is because If you go in there with a guy like Romanov and Tom Aspinall or one of those guys who has been active, it may be a problem for Jon Jones.

“Being in the Octagon after you haven’t been there for a long time, it does feel a little weird. So take some time to get used to it,” Evans said. “Going against somebody like Stipe who’s a little bit slower, who had those wars in there and [Jones] can capitalize off the damage he’s already has, I think that’ll be a good fight.” (H/T MMA Mania)

Rashad Evans believes a boxing fight between Francis Ngannou and Tyson Fury featuring MMA gloves gives “The Predator” the advantage.

Recently, the UFC Hall Of Famer was interviewed on “The Hannibal TV” podcast and asked for his thoughts on the potential matchup. Evans started off by saying he believes the fight will eventually come to fruition, as there’s too much money to be made for all parties for it not to.

In regards to the fight itself, if the men are using MMA gloves, Evans explained why he believes this gives Ngannou the competitive edge.

“I think he’s going to do the Tyson Fury thing,” Evans said. “There’s probably way too much money on the table for them. Yeah, I just don’t see that you would be able to pass that up.

“And do I think he has a chance with MMA gloves on? Yes, 100 percent. And that’s what makes the fight appealing. If it was with boxing gloves you’d be like, ‘Oh man, Tyson is going to destroy him,’ But with MMA gloves it kind of changes things up a little bit.

“It kind of gives Francis the advantage more than anything. I mean, listen, “The Gypsy King” he’s a gypsy, right?

“Bare knuckle boxing champion, so, they have a legacy that bare-knuckle boxing, and I’m sure they have all kinds of bare-knuckle boxing gypsy secrets, which is kind of, you know, small gloves secrets.

“But, Francis is something else. He’s not, he’s not normal. He’s just not normal.”

Both Ngannou and Fury have expressed interest in fighting each other for some time now. However, UFC President Dana White has seemed reluctant to permit his fighters to participate in crossover boxing bouts since the Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather crossover in 2017.

Ngannou currently reigns as the UFC heavyweight champion, while Fury recently retired from boxing undefeated and as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.

Now, Fury is interested in booking big money exhibition fights, with a bout against the UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou at the top of that list.

What do you make of Rashad Evans suggesting MMA gloves giving Ngannou the advantage over Fury in a potential boxing fight? Let us know in the comments!

Rashad Evans could be calling it a career again.

The 42-year-old former UFC champion Rashad Evans might be heading into another retirement. Evans made a quick comeback to MMA recently when he fought on the main card of the Eagle FC 44 card.

Evans faced Gabriel Checco and walked away with the victory. It was the first win for Evans in quite a while. And now that he has gotten that win he was looking for, he may be ready to enjoy his retirement.

Evans had a great run in the UFC during his time there. He came to the UFC back in 2005 when he won The Ultimate Fighter Season Two. He later went on to win the light heavyweight title. Towards the end of his career, Evans ran into some trouble. He finished his UFC career with five straight losses. He spoke recently in an interview with BJPenn.com about why he chose to return to fighting.

“It was a few different things, ending my career the way I did, it didn’t sit well with me,” Evans said. “Just doing a lot of soul-searching over the past few years brought back that competitive edge and also some of the things, the pandemic put things into perspective. It made me want to compete. It felt like we were running out of time to do the things we truly love to do.”

Evans made the decision to return from a three-year retirement and join Khabib Nurmagomedov’s promotion for one last shot at going out on a win. Now that Evans has gotten the win he was looking for, he doesn’t feel the need to do it again.

“I don’t know, I keep asking myself if I’m going to compete again or leave it as it is. It feels good to be on this high note, a big part of me just says stay here,” Evans said. “At this point in my life, I feel as if I don’t have much to fight for. Fighting for me has always been about the personal journey and I feel like I have passed the test I needed to pass. I’m still in the gym, training and working, I’m sure maybe somewhere down the road something will pop up for me where I’m just like, let me get one more. I’m going to take my time with it. I’m 42-years-old, we’ll see. That is a big part of it, that is a huge part of it on if I will do it again. I got the win I have been so desperate to get. Now that I got the win, I don’t want to trade places and get a loss.”

Evans was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2019. He also can be seen behind the desk for various ESPN commentary media duties.

Do you think Evans is done fighting for real this time following the win?
