Rener Gracie reveals loose fight kit helped Arman Tsarukyan avoid guillotine by Charles Oliviera at UFC 300

Rener Gracie, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt gave a video breakdown of how Arman Tsarukyan did not tap to either of Charles Oliveira’s submission attempts at UFC 300.

In the first round, Oliveira had a guillotine attempt in tight but Tsarukyan was able to somehow escape. Then, at the end of the third round, Charles Oliveira had Arman Tsarukyan in another choke attempt, but the bell rang as Tsarukyan had good defense to not tap.

Following UFC 300, Gracie took to social media to break down how Tsarukyan didn’t tap to either attempt.

It was interesting from Gracie to hear how Tsarukyan was able to defend the attempts, as he says the loose shorts of Tsarukyan helped him get out of the guillotine.

“Number one is you can go full body triangle. If you body triangle, and you extend the hips, you’re not gonna slide past their hip bones, and you don’t have to worry about loose shorts or tight shorts. You’re good to go.”

By not tapping, Tsarukyan edged out a split decision win over Charles Oliveira to become the No. 1 title contender at lightweight.

Arman Tsarukyan vows to KO Islam Makhachev in a rematch

By defeating Charles Oliveira at UFC 300, Arman Tsarukyan became the No. 1 contender at lightweight and should face the winner of Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier.

Tsarukyan’s UFC debut was against Makhachev, which he lost by decision. However, he has confidence he has improved greatly from then and plans to KO the champ.

“My skills, I am getting better every day, I feel it. Every camp I get better. So I feel this camp was better than the last one, and the previous one and I’m going up. I don’t know what I’m going to be in three or four years, going to be like unstoppable fighter… With Islam, a rematch, I’m going to win,” Tsarukyan said after UFC 300 (via MMAJunkie). “Doesn’t matter how. I just need to win that fight because I want to be a champion. The best-case scenario is knock him out.”

Rener Gracie Tests Positive For COVID-19, Won’t Corner Brian Ortega

Gracie Ortega

Brian Ortega will have to face The Korean Zombie without the guidance of head coach Rener Gracie.

Ortega meets Korean Zombie in the UFC Fight Island 6 headliner this Saturday in what is a highly-anticipated featherweight affair.

For Ortega, it will be his first outing since suffering a brutal fourth-round TKO defeat to Max Holloway in their featherweight title fight back in December 2018. And his task has become even harder following Gracie’s positive COVID-19 test.

Gracie had actually tested positive for COVID-19 a month ago along with his wife. They later tested negative only for Gracie to test positive again during the UFC’s recent testing procedure in Las Vegas before flying out to Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

Gracie was hoping he would still be able to go due to his previous negative tests but was told that the residual effects of COVID-19 would remain in his body for three months in addition to the fact that there could be complications in Abu Dhabi.

Gracie posted about the news on social media late last week.

“They said ‘Rener, if you get to Abu Dhabi, and you test positive there, you’re gonna quarantine for 14 days in Abu Dhabi before they even let you come home,” Gracie said. “And you’re not gonna be able to go to the fight. You won’t be participating in anything.’ There’s zero tolerance. … Even though you’re not contagious, you can’t go with a positive COVID test. You guys, I was so bummed.

“Of course, I let Brian know. … He’s super bummed but I assured him. I said, ‘Brian, luckily, this skillset that I bring to the table and that I’ve coached you for over 15 years in, is the most ingrained in you. Of all your skillsets in fighting. And it’s the one that you least need coaching on. So if anyone has to stay behind, it should be me.’”

What do you think of Gracie not being able to corner Ortega?

A pair of members of the legendary jiu-jitsu Gracie family have weighed in on the controversy surrounding the finish to Ben Askren vs. Robbie Lawler at UFC 235. In a recent video on their “Gracie Breakdown” channel, Rener asked his brother, “Was it an early stoppage?” “Yes,” Ryron responded. “Did that affect the outcome?” Rener followed up. “No,” […]

Rener Gracie Feels Brian Ortega Has ‘Already Won Title’ Prior To UFC 231

Rener Gracie feels that Brian Ortega is already a champion as he has already won the title before taking the Octagon at UFC 231.

Rener Gracie feels that title contender Brian Ortega is already a champion heading into the UFC 231 pay-per-view. He’s slated to challenge Max Holloway for the UFC featherweight title in the headliner of this show.

The reason for this mindset is due to Ortega pulling himself out of a bad situation. For those who may not know, he grew up in the projects of a rough area of Los Angeles. Now, he’s at the top of his game and on the cusp of becoming a UFC champion.

Ortega earned this title shot after he beat former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at the UFC 222 pay-per-view. Gracie, who is Ortega’s longtime coach, made one thing known while speaking with Luke Thomas on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. That is the fact that the hard part of this journey is over and now he can look forward to his chance.

Brian Ortega Is Already A Champion

“Anyone who knows Brian from that era knows that Brian already won the title,” Gracie said. “To have made it out of the challenges he faced. The difficult circumstances for him and his family that he faced early on and really the life that he lived. Which was not by any means a positive one by conventional standards. For Brian to have made it out of what he was involved with. To now be competing as a professional athlete on the level that he’s competing at. He already won. So for me, I look at this and I’m like, this is all extra.”

Once Ortega was 13 years old, he decided to train Brazilian jiu-jitsu with Gracie and his brother Ryron. Obviously, there’s a lot of history between Ortega and the family. With that said, he believes that with Ortega being in the spot is already a victory in itself.

“For me, we’re already celebrating,” Gracie said. “Being here is already a victory in itself. And yes, winning the UFC featherweight championship would be phenomenal. Really for Brian. I’m just so excited for him, knowing what he came from that this would be something. So meaningful for him and his family.”

[VIDEO] NFL Star Tamba Hali Cross-Trains With the Gracies

(Video via The Gracie Academy’s YouTube page)

It seems like more and more professional ball players of every stripe are taking up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA training in their off-seasons. Rarely, however, have we gotten much more than general interview references to the training they are doing.

Jiu Jitsu and salesmen extraordinaires (seriously, Rener could probably sell you your own urineRener and Ryron Gracie, sons of UFC founder Rorian Gracie, bring us a pretty great inside look at the fight training that at least one NFL star has been doing this past off-season. On the latest episode of their YouTube series, The Gracie Way, Rener and Ryron train with their student and Kansas City Chief All-Pro outside linebacker, Tamba Hali.

It looks like Hali has really bought in to “The Gracie Way.” The 270 pound giant is focused not on getting bigger and stronger, but on getting leaner and more wholistic in his approach to health, it seems as he reveals that he has lost fifteen pounds so far training with the Gracies.

First, Hali does some hill runs, alternately pulling and pushing Ryron, who is on a skate board, up-hill. We also see Hali eat some of Rener’s sandwiches and acai bowls as well as training in a gi at their Gracie Academy.

Hali not only rolls with the Gracies and other students in the video, but also with former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Check all that out, plus Halis reflections on his training and life style over haul and his blue belt ceremony.

Then, get out there and do some training yourself on this Sunday afternoon. Only, you know, leave your computer on CagePotato and come back real quick to check out more later because we’re needy and start missing you quickly.

Ed O’Neill to Provide Color Commentary at Metamoris II Jiu Jitsu Invitational

(Good work, Ed. Position before submission.)

Al Bundy may have exaggerated his exploits at Polk High, but the actor who portrayed him on Married With Children, Ed O’Neill, actually has real athletic chops to speak of. O’Neill played linebacker in college at Ohio State and Youngstown State University, and was briefly signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers where, according to O’Neill, “I stayed for about a minute.”

While acting in Hollywood, O’Neill discovered the gentle art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He began training under Rorian Gracie and never stopped, earning a black belt in 2007.

“I began studying Gracie Jiu Jitsu over 20 years ago,” said O’Neill in a Metamoris press release distributed Tuesday. “I was actually very hesitant to start, but a 10-minute session with Rorion Gracie was enough to get me hooked. For me, studying Jiu Jitsu has been an amazing experience. In a way it’s given me a second family.”

O’Neill will provide color commentary for the highly-anticipated submission-only pro invitational Metamoris II, which takes place in Los Angeles on June 9th and will be broadcast live on their website, metamoris.com. O’Neill will join his long-time teacher’s son, Rener Gracie, in providing the commentary for the Metamoris II stream.

From what we’ve seen, O’Neill is capable of providing insightful analysis and we all know he can kick ass. We’re not usually big on celebrity gimmick appearances but O’Neill doing fight commentary makes perfect sense to us. Feel free to react to this news accordingly.
