Boxing is often credited with having given many a troubled youth an alternate path away from a life of crime, as well as an opportunity to make something of themselves – and the sport of mixed martial arts is no different.

Researching this article, there were many tales to be had of the rough childhoods, thuggish behavior, and poor choices that had led to 10 current UFC stars having been sent to jail at some point in their lives.

However, one recurring theme that cropped up more often than not was of these individuals then discovered MMA upon their release, and they were then able to use that as a springboard to move beyond their criminal past, channel their energy and attention in a more positive direction, and it ultimately lead to them competing in the Octagon.

It’s a positive take on what is otherwise a dark collection of stories that demonstrate just how close some of these stars came to throwing away any chance they had of making something of their lives. Let’s take a look back at how 10 current UFC athletes turned it around after going to jail.

Mark Hunt

Some of heavy-handed heavyweight Mark Hunt’s many fans may be surprised to discover that in his younger days before he discovered MMA, he had a reputation for violence and criminal behavior in his home city of Auckland, New Zealand.

Hunt and his siblings suffered horrific physical abuse at the hands of their father growing up, and the anger felt as a result of that led to him regularly getting into trouble himself for fighting on the streets.

Hunt also became involved in petty crimes and admits to having stolen dozens of cars in his early teens, before finally being sentenced to nine months in jail at just 16-years-old after mugging a man for his Dr Martens shoes.

Hunt didn’t learn his lesson though and was later put behind bars again for assault.

It was only when a bouncer convinced him to try martial arts after witnessing him knock out several people outside a nightclub that Hunt finally started to get his life on track, and in the two decades since he’s gone from living a pitiful existence to earning $750,000 every time he fights in the Octagon.

145 lbs: Arnold Allen vs. Makwan Amirkhan

Londoners are in for a great night at UFC Fight Night 107 with a pretty nice line up in most categories. The 145 pound bout features Arnold Allen (11-1) vs. Makwan Amirkhan (13-2). The young pair is likely to fight a close match since both of them are talented and are expected to knock off many of their opponents in the coming years.

Allen’s debut in debut in 2015 was notable. After submitting Alan Omer he took on Yaotzin Meza six months later and won a cracker of a fight. Allen has managed to evolve into a well rounded fighter with tenacity although he may seem to drift at times. Amirkhan on the other hand is an aggressive opponent with the unique ability to go for broke no matter what his position. This game-plan could work and we may seem Amirkhan getting the better of Allen by submission.

155 lbs.: Joe Duffy vs. Reza Madadi

Joe Duffy (15-2) faces off Reza Madadi in the 155lbs category at UFC Fight Night 107 in London. As we recall, Duffy started his UFC career with two amazing wins that did not last 5 minutes in total against Jake Lindsey and Ivan Jorge. His next bout was well fought as well where he dropped a decision to Dustin Poirier. He then dropped and submitted Mitch Clarke six months later. With 10 submission and 4 knockouts in the early round it won’t seem likely that many will bet against Duffy.

Reza Madadi returned to the cage after 18 months following brushes with the law. He dropped a decision to Norman Parke and then scored a knock out against Yan Cabral in their Rotterdam fight. He has submitted eight opponents and has a top game that is seemingly effecting. His wrestling prowess is better than most in the lightweight category. However, lack of speed and striking attack could be Madadi’s downfall. It would make sense to put a few bucks on Duffy who should get through with a unanimous decision.

Three Bouts Including Jimi Manuwa vs. Corey Anderson Added to UFC London

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will be making its return to London on March 18. The UFC previously announced six bouts for the card including Brad Pickett’s retirement fight against Henry Briones. This morning, they announced three more bouts.

First, the official Twitter page of UFC Europe announced a lightweight tilt between Joseph Duffy and Reza Madadi. Then the account revealed light heavyweights Jimi Manuwa and Corey Anderson will also be on the card. The third new bout is a women’s bantamweight contest between Lina Lansberg and Veronica Macedo.

Manuwa will be returning to the place he calls home after his second round knockout over Ovince Saint Preux back in October. The win got him back on track after suffering the second loss of his career to Anthony Johnson. Anderson also got back in the win column in his last fight. After losing a controversial split decision to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Anderson dominated Sean O’Connell in a second round TKO finish.

Duffy’s first loss since Oct. 2011 came at the hands of Dustin Poirier at UFC 195. “Irish Joe” returned to the Octagon six months later to take on Mitch Clarke. Duffy submitted Clarke in 25 seconds. Madadi’s last bout was eight months ago. He TKO’d Yan Cabral and sent him packing from the UFC.

Lansberg had a rough go in her UFC debut. She was welcomed to the world leader in mixed martial arts (MMA) by Cris Cyborg. “Elbow Princess” was demolished. She’ll look to earn her first UFC win against Macedo. This will be Macedo’s second UFC bout as well. She was TKO’d by Ashlee Evans-Smith in her debut.

This UFC Fight Night event will take place inside the O2 Arena. UFC Fight Club members will get access to pre-sale tickets on Jan. 25. Those who are signed up with the UFC’s newsletter will gain access to tickets the following day. The general public will be able to purchase tickets on Jan. 27.
