Rich Franklin had a decorated career with the UFC. A career highlighted with wins over the likes of Wanderlei Silva, Chuck Liddell, and Ken Shamrock.

His career hit its peak when he was crowned as the fourth man in UFC history to be named as the middleweight champion of the world. However, Franklin’s reign as the champion ended abruptly when he met Anderson Silva in the Octagon for the first time. Silva defeated Franklin via TKO in the first round.

As a result, the victory led to the longest title reign of all time. After 2,457 days of being the UFC champion, Silva’s meteoric rise came to a halt at UFC 162 when he lost the belt to Chris Weidman. Since that loss, Silva has had a record of 1-6.

The beloved 44-year-old legend has remained in the game. His extended tenure in the UFC has garnered the attention of former opponent Franklin. Speaking to theScoreMMA, Franklin shared his thoughts on possibly rematching the Brazilian. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“I would love to dance with Anderson again. And I believe I could beat him, but that’s the kind of mentality you have to have an athlete, right? It’s amazing somebody that at our age is still competing and trust me, on a realistic note, I think about it from time to time.

“It’s what you love to do. That’s why Anderson is still competing. Because it’s what he loves to do. I love competition, I love martial arts, I love training. So don’t think I don’t occasionally maybe get that bug”.

Franklin found a smooth transition from his UFC career. He has remained in the fight business and is now the Vice President of ONE Championship. It has been seven years since the ONE VP has fought. Whether Franklin is simply voicing his imagination, or is serious about making a comeback is to be determined.

Would you have any interest in watching the two UFC legends, Rich Franklin and Anderson Silva, run it back for the third time?

The Ben Askren-Demetrious Johnson was still worth the investment for both sides according to ONE Championship vice president Rich Franklin.

The pair were traded in MMA’s first-ever trade last year with Askren going to the UFC while Johnson went to ONE Championship. “Mighty Mouse” has so far registered three wins and recently became the ONE flyweight grand prix champion.

Askren, on the other hand, is 1-2 with the promotion and most recently was submitted by Demian Maia at UFC Singapore last month. It led many to question why the UFC even trade a pound-for-pound great in Johnson for Askren.

UFC president Dana White, however, would later defend the trade and Franklin is the latest to do so:

“It was a pretty straight forward trade from the business side,” Franklin told MMA Junkie. “Just kind of flip-flopped from one organization to the next, and so nothing tricky about it. And I’ll say this: Askren goes to the UFC, he’s competing against some of the top level guys obviously with Masvidal and what not, and then DJ comes over to ONE Championship and is competing against some of the top guys.

“People will make a comment like that based on athlete’s performance, but the reality, what you have to ask yourself: What kind of return on investment did the organization get on the trade?”

Of course, Johnson never resonated with the American audience and struggled to sell pay-per-views. Askren, meanwhile, has been a very popular fighter since his arrival due to his trash talking which has stirred up interests in his fight.

Those factors lead Franklin to believe both promotions got their worth:

“DJ, for us, who maybe didn’t get the respect that he deserved in another organization, is going to do really well over here in ONE Championship,” Franklin explained. “There are many fans on this side of the planet that gravitate towards the smaller athletes, and he puts on exciting matches. There’s no doubt about that, so for us, regardless if he’s winning or losing, that’s not as important as he’s a big draw.

“And likewise for Ben Askren moving to the UFC. Regardless of whether he’s winning or losing, he’s a big draw because people are going to be curious. Even though he lost his last match to Demian Maia, when they find him for another match, people are still going to be interested in seeing how he performs. To see if, ‘Oh, maybe he had a rough start out of the gates or whatever,’ so they’re still getting a return on investment in that respect, and I think it was probably smart for both organizations because the UFC wasn’t getting a return on investment in Demetrious.”

Do you agree with Franklin?

You have to be tough to fight in the UFC, but there are some limits that even these warriors are not expected to push beyond.

Nevertheless, no matter how dire the circumstances, some UFC stars appear to have an ingrained ‘never say die’ attitude that enables to push on through the pain barrier when even some of their most battle-hardened contemporaries would have called it quits.

In this article we’ll pay tribute to this rare breed as we recall 10 instances in which fighters suffered gruesome, agonizing injuries in the Octagon, yet still battled on regardless.

Rich Franklin

When former middleweight champion Rich Franklin stepped in to replace Tito Ortiz against hall of famer Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 in 2010 he knew that he was facing a wounded lion, with ‘The Iceman’ having been given an ultimatum by Dana White that if he didn’t win he would have to hang up his gloves.

With his career on the line, Liddell came out strong and started throwing powerful kicks instead of just relying on loading up with his often battle-tested right hand.

That proved to be bad news for Franklin, as just a minute into the fight had to block a thundering head kick attempt, which caused a clean break to the ulna bone in his left forearm.

This was a nightmare scenario for Franklin, but he did well to disguise his discomfort and kept fighting, even daring to continue to punch with his broken left arm at times while also posting on the damaged limb to get back to his feet after being taken down.

In the final minute of the round, Liddell thought he had Franklin in trouble and began upping the intensity, driving forward looking for a highlight-reel finish.

However, just then the wounded ‘Ace’ stood his ground, bit down on his mouthpiece and unleashed a short right hand that connected flush and knocked Liddell out cold for a classic against-all-odds victory.
