Robert Whittaker will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon next month. “The Reaper” headlines UFC 243 in Australia opposite Israel Adesanya.

Whittaker defends his UFC middleweight title against the interim champ in Adesanya. All the action goes down from the Marvel Arena in Melbourne, Australia on October 6. Whittaker hasn’t competed since June of 2018. Over a year has passed for Whittaker since he has fought, dealing with some serious health issues along the way. Now, he’ll step back into action against one of the hottest strikers in the sport at the moment.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, however, Whittaker says she’s unconcerned with ring rust heading into the fight, as he has been keeping himself active.

“I do believe in ring rust if you’re not doing certain things to prepare yourself for competition,” Whittaker said. “If you’re not competing at all, if you haven’t competed at all and you’re not used to the adrenaline dump, not used to the pressure that comes with competing, then certainly the pressure is going to get to you and you might falter.

“I’ve been competing in jiu-jitsu, I’ve been competing in wrestling, I’ve been sparring in ways to increase the pressure and feel that. There’s ways to combat that. I also think once you reach a certain level – I know what to do. I’ve been there before, I’ve felt the pressure before, and I know that come October I’m going to walk in there and do my best.”

Whittaker takes on an undefeated Adesanya with a record of 17-0. “Stylebender” is a proven finisher who has picked up big victories over Derek Brunson, Anderson Silva, and Kelvin Gastelum. When the two finally clash in Melbourne, it will be the biggest fight in Australian history.

Do you think Whittaker will show signs of ring rust at UFC 243?

UFC 243 is right around the corner, and many are suggesting it could be the biggest event in the promotion’s history.

In the main event of the night, UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker takes on interim champion Israel Adesanya to unify their titles. This is a battle of two of the best strikers at 185 pounds, who are proven finishers and tough five-round warriors. All the action goes down from the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia on October 5, 2019.

Whittaker hasn’t fought since June of 2018 when he defeated Yoel Romero at UFC 225. The fight was initially set to be a championship bout, however, with Romero missing weight, it was changed to a five-round non-title fight. This will officially be the first title defense of Whittaker’s career.

He takes on Adesanya, an undefeated striker with a record of 17-0. In his last outing, “Stylebender” outclassed Kelvin Gastelum to capture the interim middleweight title and secure himself the next shot at Whittaker. Ahead of the fight, the UFC has released an epic promo video for the Whittaker vs. Adesanya matchup.

Israel Adesanya plans on becoming the undisputed middleweight champion. And he expects to come away with the win fairly comfortably.

Adesanya will meet Robert Whittaker in a middleweight title unification clash in the main event of UFC 243 which takes place October 5 in Melbourne, Australia. “The Last Stylebender” is undefeated and is coming off an impressive performance against Kelvin Gastelum where he won the interim belt.

However, Whittaker has not tasted defeat since 2014 and holds notable victories over Yoel Romero (twice) and Ronaldo Souza. Despite that, Adesanya feels he will pick “The Reaper” out pretty easily:

“He’s a guy I can pick apart easily,” Adesanya told reporters on Wednesday’s UFC 243 conference call (via MMA Junkie). “A challenge I haven’t faced before? I don’t think so. He just does what he does very well. There’s only a certain amount of awkwardness that he has that I haven’t seen before, but he can try to prove me wrong. From what I see, though, I’ll pick him apart quite easily.

“I have these attributes that I use very well, and I think what his camp might look at the last fight and think when Kelvin was able to get close. That was just an error at our part and a good game plan on their part. But we’ve taken care of those errors. I’m going to be able to use my height and reach like I always have.”

Despite being promoted to middleweight champion in 2017, Whittaker hasn’t had an official title defense yet. Part of that is because of Romero missing weight in their second fight last year. The other reason is because of injuries causing Whittaker to pull out of two title bouts.

Adesanya, on the other hand, plans on becoming an active champion after defeating Whittaker:

“As a champion, I’ll be a lot more active as a champion than he’s been, and I’ll be a lot more active,” Adesanya added. “Maybe not at the beginning because of timing and everything else, but I’ll be an active champion.”

What do you think of Adesanya’s comments? Do you think he can beat Whittaker with ease?
