Scrap any talk of Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya’s UFC middleweight unification title fight taking place in the United States.

UFC President Dana White spoke to media recently and doubled down that he’s going to book the fight down under, and it will “blow the f*cking doors” off the country:

“I’m gonna put on a fight this fall in Australia that’s gonna blow the f*cking doors off that country, okay,” White said. “And, it’s gonna be a massive event over there. And, what’s crazy is, this massive event that’s gonna happen in Australia, people in the U.K. are gonna watch it, people in Europe are gonna watch it, people in the United States, Canada, Brazil – the world will watch this fight.

“I’m talking about Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker. The world will watch that fight, from Australia, which will be a massive event there. We’re not a U.S. promoter, we’re a global promoter.”

Whittaker captured the UFC middleweight title when he defeated Yoel Romero for the interim 185-pound strap back in July of 2017. He was promoted to undisputed champion soon after, following Georges St-Pierre vacating the middleweight throne. Whittaker was scheduled for his first title defense in a rematch with Romero last year, but after the Cuban missed weight, it was changed to a five round non-title fight.

Injuries have plagued “Bobby Knuckles’” career over the past several months. Hopefully, he’s healthy enough to make it into the Octagon against Adesanya. “Stylebender” won the interim UFC middleweight title when he defeated Kelvin Gastelum in the co-main event of UFC 236 this past April. He has established himself as one of the most dynamic strikers in the promotion and remains undefeated at 17-0.

The much-awaited title unification clash between Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya looks like it will no longer take place in Australia.

Whittaker and Adesanya are slated to unify the middleweight titles in what has been deemed the biggest Australasian fight in history. It was reported in April that the clash was set for UFC 243 which would take place October 5 at the Bankwest Stadium in Sydney.

The Daily Telegraph, however, reports, that it will now be moved to Las Vegas. The reason being the event would clash with NRL grand final that takes place in Sydney as well. Whittaker’s agent Titus Day also confirmed to The Daily Telegraph that the move to Las Vegas was “extremely likely.”

Newshub, however, adds that the UFC is not concerned with the clash. Instead, they want to appease its North American pay-per-view audience.

It comes as a big blow for mixed martial arts fans in Australasia. Whittaker, of course, is a New Zealand-born Aussie while Adesanya moved to New Zealand as a teenager. An event headlined by the duo would have undoubtedly been a huge success and a monumental moment for the sport in that region. For now, at least, nothing is confirmed.

Kelvin Gastelum believes Israel Adesanya will emerge triumphant in his middleweight title unification clash with Robert Whittaker.

Adesanya defeated Gastelum in a back-and-forth war at UFC 236 in April to become the interim middleweight champion. “The Last Stylebender” is now slated to take on Whittaker in an Australasian clash later this year. According to reports, it could happen at UFC 243 which is set to take place in Sydney, Australia, later this year.

Before their interim title fight, Gastelum was originally scheduled to face Whittaker, until the latter had to pull out through injury. But having gone five rounds with Adesanya, he believes the New Zealander will emerge victorious, which will set up a future rematch between them.

“It’s a hard one but Israel has my respect!” Gastelum wrote on Twitter in response to a fan question. “He really stepped up when I couldn’t! (A mistake I will never let happen again.) and showed a lot of heart and so I think he will pull it off and it will set up a rematch between him and I when I win my fight as well.”

Despite his setback against Adesanya, a win or two could see Gastelum get right back into the title picture. His current No. 4 ranking also helps as the likes of Jack Hermansson and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza have called for a fight with him next.

Who do you want to see Gastelum face next? And do you agree with his prediction?
