The highly anticipated ONE Championship debut of kickboxing sensation Takeru Segawa has been officially announced.

Per a report from Marc Raimondi of ESPN, the former three-division K-1 world champion will debut at ONE 165 in Tokyo against none other than Muay Thai superstar Rodtang Jitmuangnon.

The two combat sports icons will compete in a flyweight kickboxing super-fight according to ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong who made the announcement during a press conference in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Rodtang has competed inside the ONE Championship Circle 16 times since making his debut for the promotion in 2018. During that time, he has bested some of the biggest names in the art of eight limbs, including current ONE world champions Jonathan Haggerty and Joseph Lasiri.

Most recently, ‘The Iron Man’ lost a razor-close decision to ‘The Kicking Machine’ Superlek in September. It was his first Muay Thai loss since signing with ONE, though many fans believe Rodtang should be been dubbed the victor following the three-round instant classic.

Takeru, who has been regarded as the best pound-for-pound kickboxer on the planet, will enter ONE Championship as the hottest free agent signing in recent years. The ‘Natural Born Crusher’ boasts a stunning 42-3 professional record with 25 of his victories coming by way of knockout. Takeru also holds the distinction of being the first and only fighter in K-1 history to claim three titles in three different weight classes; super featherweight, featherweight, and super bantamweight.

In addition to Rodtang vs. Takeru, fans in Tokyo will see the return of Japanese MMA icon and former ONE lightweight world champion Shinya Aoki. ‘Tobikan Judan’ will step inside the Circle for a long-awaited showdown with Texas native and former UFC standout ‘Super’ Sage Northcutt.

Superlek defeats Rodtang in all out war at ONE Championship superfight decision win

Thai striking sensation, Superlek has landed one of the biggest victories of his professional combat sports career to date, dropping ONE Championship flyweight Muay Thai champion and face of the sport, Rodtang Jitmuangnon in a unanimous decision effort atop a ONE Friday Fights 34 card from the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

Superlek, the current ONE flyweight kickboxing world champion, entered tonight’s monstrous showdown with compatriot, Rodtang off the back of a stunning nine-fight winning run, fought back from some real adversity in the first frame, dealing with a series of cuts and lacerations on his hairline — turning his bleach blonde hair an unsightly red.

However, midway through the second frame, rallying against Jitmuangon Gym staple, Rodtang, the Thai striker recorded a knockdown on the latter, sending him to the canvas with a counter step-in elbow at the ropes, drawing an official count from the ring official.

And managing to counter well and fight from the ropes throughout the third frame, Superlek would emerge with a unanimous decision win over Rodtang on all three judge’s scorecards, in a memorable superfight for the ages.

Reigning ONE flyweight Muay Thai world champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon is training harder than he has in years for his highly anticipated clash with Superlek Kiatmoo9.

On September 22, the two Thai superstars will step inside the ring at the legendary Lumpinee Boxing Stadium for a fight that fans have been dreaming about for years. The pair were scheduled to scrap in March, but Rodtang withdrew from the contest, citing an injury sustained while training. However, ‘The Iron Man’ would go on to defend his title against Edgar Tabares at ONE Fight Night 10 on May 5, leading many to believe that ‘The Iron Man’ pulled out of the fight for fear of losing.

“Before the fight was made, everyone around the world said Rodtang was scared and the fights would never happen but I know these guys behind the scenes,” ONE CEO and founder Chatri Sityodtong said in an interview with the South China Morning Post. “I talk to these guys all the time. Rodtang is not scared of anybody. This guy is on a tear and a high in his career. He hasn’t been beaten in many years. When you have that confidence you’re unbreakable.”

Both men enter the bout undefeated in the art of eight limbs under the ONE banner, but they got there through very different means. While Superlek is known for his incredible discipline and work ethic, already fighting four times in 2023, ‘The Iron Man’ has a penchant for taking things relatively easy during training camp.

“Talk to experts around the world and in Thailand. People think Superlek is going to win, but I don’t know. The more I think … Rodtang has been training very hard. He was not training at all before, I think he trained two days for the Edgar Tabares fight, literally a two-day camp, and his wife outed him on that one. I had no idea he trained two days, but that’s the level of talent he has,” Sityodtong said.

Despite the lack of training, Rodtang has scored 12 straight Muay Thai victories in ONE Championship, beating some of the biggest names in the sport including current ONE world champions Joseph Lasiri and Jonathan Haggerty on two separate occasions.

Sityodtong believes Rodtang’s casual approach to training could ultimately cost him, but acknowledged that ‘The Iron Man’ is taking his fight with Superlek seriously and is training harder than he has in years for the long-awaited showdown.

“That’s the downfall of every great fighter. When you saw [Mike] Tyson in his heyday when he was coming up he was disciplined, training like a madman. But towards the end of his career when he lost to Buster Douglas, he started having problems at home and then he didn’t train. Eventually got knocked out, it happens to the best of them,” Sityodtong said.

“But Rodtang is very motivated, and he’s been training very hard every day. From my understanding from both camps, they are both in unbelievable shape.”

Rodtang is the Highest Paid Fighter in the History of Muay Thai

Today, Rodtang ranks as the highest-paid Muay Thai fighter in the history of the sport, earning 10 million baht, or roughly $285,000 per fight. That success has allowed ‘The Iron Man’ to buy a home for his parents, a dream car for himself, and amass a very respectable collection of shoes. But as we’ve seen with fighters like Irish megastar Conor McGregor, money changes everything. Rodtang is still competing and dominating at the highest level, but if he doesn’t focus on the task at hand, he could find himself on the losing end for the first time in years.

“It’s human nature,” Sityodtong added. “When you have nothing you are willing to train all day, all night. When you have everything, it really takes a special extraordinary athlete to say I want to train even harder and be the very best in history. I think that it’s widely known Rodtang doesn’t train very hard. Ever since he won the world title in ONE, he hasn’t been razor-sharp and trained every day.

“When you have a two-day training camp, that’s pretty insane to me, actually that was shocking to me. Whereas Superlek is known to be very disciplined. He trains day in, day out, whether he has a fight or not. To each his own at the end of the day. Rodtang is fighting for his family, Superlek too, and for the right to be the pound-for-pound best in the world.

“By now, both are so experienced, each has fought 300 fights. I think Rodtang is up to 400. These are killers who have been fighting all their lives. They know their bodies and how to peak, they also know how to relax and stay calm and level-headed. A lot of times in camp, when you’re training hard and being singular-minded, you can almost mentally mess with yourself before you even step in the ring, so I think [the water park visit] is Rodtang’s way of letting the steam off.”

The long-awaited Muay Thai superfight between ‘The Iron Man’ Rodtang Jitmuangnon and Superlek Kiatmoo9 will go down on September 22.

One week before the promotion’s highly anticipated ONE Fight Night 14 card, which features the return of another Thai fan favorite, Stamp Fairtex, ONE Championship is delivering a fight that fans have been clamoring for. Rodtang, the reigning ONE flyweight Muay Thai world champion will put his title on the line against Superlek. ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong made the announcement on Sunday via Facebook.

“BREAKING NEWS: Get ready for RODTANG vs SUPERLEK on 9/22 at Lumpinee Stadium for the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Championship! LET’S GOOOOO!!!”

The bout will be Superlek’s fifth fight in 2023. Recently, ‘The Kicking Machine’ competed twice in the span of three weeks, dispatching newcomer Nabile Anane and Russian knockout artist Tagir Khalilov. Superlek has also competed in kickboxing bouts, capturing the ONE flyweight kickboxing world title in January.

Rodtang and Superlek Were Previously Scheduled to Scrap Earlier This Year

Rodtang and Superlek were originally scheduled to scrap in March, but ‘The Iron Man’ withdrew from the bout due to an injury sustained whilst training. He would go on to defend his flyweight title a month later against Edgar Tabares at ONE Fight Night 10.

After the cancellation, both fighters seemingly suggested that a fight between the two was no longer a priority. “Right now in my heart, as a Thai person, I want to see every Thai be a champion,” Rodtang told the SCMP via a translator, ahead of his second-round TKO win over Tabares. Superlek also commented that he was “in no hurry” for a clash with Rodtang following his win at ONE Fight Night 12 last month.

“I don’t really have an exact answer, but I don’t think it will be happening any time soon,” Superlek told the SCMP in Bangkok. “I still want to face other opponents for now, and I still want to be the first one in this ranking. I believe Rodtang just wants to conquer his ranking as well. I’m not really in a hurry. I also just want to stay in my lane, just keep doing my thing.”

Rodtang and Superlek are both undefeated in Muay Thai competition under the ONE Championship banner with ‘The Iron Man’ dispatching 12-straight opponents since making his promotional debut in 2018. Superlek is 8-0 in the art of eight limbs.

Muay Thai sensation Rodtang Jitmuangnon put his ONE flyweight Muay Thai world championship on the line at ONE Fight Night 10 against Mexican-born ONE Championship debutant Edgar Tabares. As the first-ever WBC Muay Thai International champion, Tabares had upset on his mind, but that would be much easier said that done as he squared off with one of the most feared strikers in all of combat sports.

The opening round saw the two technical strikers downloading information on one another. After a rather tame opening three minutes, ‘The Iron Man’ picked up the pace in the second, walking down Edgar Tabares. With his back against the fence, Tabares fired off a body kick that was caught by Rodtang. Tabares attempted to throw a spinning elbow, but Rodtang saw it coming from a mile away. ‘The Iron Man’ avoided Tabares’ spinning attack and delivered his own brutal elbow strike to Tabares’ chin, dropping the Mexican-born fighter in the second round.

Tabares was unable to answer the referee’s 10-count, forcing referee Olivier Coste to call for the stoppage.

Rodtang wants ONE gold in Kickboxing

At ONE Fight Night 6, the ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Champion Ilias Ennahachi was originally booked to defend his throne against Thailand’s Superlek and Rodtang was to fight Daniel Puertas. Due to weight issues, Ennahachi dropped out of the fight and vacated his world title. Puertas was then moved to fight Superlek for the vacant kickboxing title, and ‘The Iron Man’ was then to fight China’s Jiduo Yibu. Both ‘The Iron Man’ and Superlek won their bouts.

‘The Iron Man’ Rodtang has made his intentions clear, he wants a world title in kickboxing and then MMA. Superlek and ‘The Iron Man’ nearly fought last year during the ONE Muay Thai Grand Prix. Due to weight issues, ‘The Iron Man’ was unable to compete in the tournament. Superlek vs Rodtang is a fight combat sports fans have been demanding. Both are phenoms in Muay Thai, and the two may fight for a kickboxing world title later this year.

‘The Iron Man’ is only 25-year-old has earned a whopping 270 career victories and holds the ONE flyweight Muay Thai world title. The Thai athlete began his Muay Thai career when he was only 7 years old as a way to support his family. ‘The Kicking Machine’ Superlek Kiatmoo9, the ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Champion, began his professional career at the age of 8 and has since earned a record of 131-29.

Superlek and Rodtang are on a collision course. The two Thai strikers will likely fight for the Kickboxing throne in 2023.
