Jacare Souza

Middleweight contender Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza has issued a statement for the first time since a positive coronavirus test result forced his withdrawal from UFC 249. ‘Jacare’ had already weighed in and was all set to meet Uriah Hall in an exciting match-up on the UFC 249 undercard.

Unfortunately, that match-up was scrapped less than 24 hours before the event was scheduled as the Brazilian came back positive in one of his COVID-19 tests. His infection meant the whole card was in jeopardy, with many fans and pundits calling for the show to be cancelled. A primary reason for this was due to the fact ‘Jacare’ had been socializing with other athletes on the card at the fighter hotel. Luckily fight fans the card went ahead as planned and as of right now no more coronavirus cases have been reported.

‘Jacare’ took to social media earlier today to express his disappointment at what transpired at UFC 249, ask for his fight against Hall to be rebooked and to thank all the fans for the messages of support, he wrote.

“I was very sad to not be able to fight at UFC 249, but I want you to know that, as soon as I’m medically cleared, I hope to reschedule my fight with Uriah Hall so that I can put on the show that everyone expects. I thank my corners for the partnership, my opponent for the words of support and the UFC for all the care. Thank you all for the kind messages I have received in the last few days. The upcoming weeks I will be secluded with my family and coaches and focused on our health so I can be back soon. Thank you.”

Fabricio Werdum

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum has praised the fight promotion for the safety measures they put in place during UFC 249 fight week.

Werdum fought on the night’s preliminary card for the first time after serving a two-year drugs ban. The Brazilian submission specialist struggled against Alexei Oleynik and ultimately fell to a split decision defeat at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida this past weekend.

In the lead up to the event, Werdum found himself in the midst of a health and safety nightmare. His compatriot and friend Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza tested positive for COVID-19 and his fight against Uriah Hall was scrapped from the card after both fighters had already weighed in.

While social distancing procedures were supposed to be in place at the fighters hotel during the lead up to the event, Werdum and ‘Jacare’ were seen interacting in close proximity to one another before the middleweights positive test result. This caused concern among some media and fans that Wedrum and other fighters on the card could have become infected prior to the event.

Fabricio Werdum Praises “Very Careful” UFC For COVID-19 Protocols

Speaking to MMA fighting the former heavyweight king had nothing but good things to say about the UFC and how they dealt with the most unusual of fight weeks.

“The UFC was very careful,” Werdum said. “The UFC was really well prepared for this event. It’s impressive. They were checking our temperature every day, I had to do several exams. I got tested for coronavirus three times since I got there.”

Werdum also took the time out to defend his friend ‘Jacare’ for still travelling to the event despite knowing he had been exposed to the virus through a family member, he said.

“‘Jacare’ is a friend of mine for many years, I really like him. I was sad for him. I texted him and he said he was very upset too because the prejudice is hard. There’s always someone to talk crap. It pisses me off because some people have no respect.

“You think ‘Jacare’ said, ‘Oh, I wanna have the coronavirus’? No, no one wants to have it. No one wants to catch this sh*t and pass it on to their families. Nobody. But it happens. People talk crap, but thank God the UFC is assisting him and he will be alright. He won’t have the strong symptoms because he’s always well-prepared and that helps.”

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza is not done at 205 pounds, despite his return to middleweight to face Uriah Hall at UFC 249 in April.

Souza dropped a decision loss to Jan Blachowicz at UFC Sao Paulo this past November in his light heavyweight debut. Now, he’ll return to middleweight, but according to his coach, Josuel Distak, who recently spoke to MMA Fighting, Souza will continue to fight at both weight classes moving forward.

“‘Jacare’ will continue fighting in both divisions,” Distak said. “He will do special fights at 205, and go after the belt at 185. We still dream about fighting for the Ultimate Fighting belt. ‘Jacare’ still has that dream, and it’s hard to stop someone that has a dream. That’s our goal, to fight in both divisions. Wherever the exciting fights are, that’s where we’re going.”

As for his performance against Blachowicz, Distak says there’s no doubt in his mind Souza should’ve been given the nod for the split decision win. He feels his fighter was the more aggressive combatant on the night, and doesn’t believe Blachowicz wanted to fight.

“He fought well against a guy that was knocking everyone out,” Distak said. “(Blachowicz) did not want to fight ‘Jacare’. It was a split decision, and I thought we won that fight. It was a close, technical fight, but ‘Jacare’ was more aggressive. There’s no doubt in my mind that Ronaldo won that fight.”

What do you think about Souza fighting at both middleweight and light heavyweight?
