Two-weight UFC champion, Georges St-Pierre has a unique take on the forever raging ‘GOAT’ discussion.

Whatever the sport may be, the argument of who is the greatest of all time, or ‘GOAT’, is something that has and will forever be argued. MMA is no different, and whether you’re on the side of Jon Jones, Demetrious Johnson, or one of the other usual suspects – a unanimous choice will likely never be in place.

Georges St-Pierre names his GOAT

While a person’s pick is usually one of a handful of names, occasionally someone will hit you with something out of left field. St-Pierre is one of those people, and in an interview with Michael Bisping, the Canadian was asked who his choice would be – giving a an unusual answer.

“For me, I think, it’s Royce Gracie because he did stuff that I don’t think I’ll ever see again,” St-Pierre said. “He was fighting in an era that didn’t have any weight classes, the rules were much different. It was very different, and back then it was a totally different thing. You were going into the cage, you thought maybe someone could die.” (H/T MiddleEasy)

Gracie famously won UFC 1 back in 1993 and took part in legendary contests in both UFC, Pride and K-1.

Now, St-Pierre is realistic and explains that he understands that if the Gracie of then fought some of today’s talent, it might not work so well. However, St-Pierre would justify his choice of the BJJ ace, giving an interesting justification.

“For me, Royce Gracie is the number one,” St-Pierre continued. “Of course, if you put Royce Gracie in modern days against the champion, I don’t think he would maybe do so well. So, I think the real GOAT is not even born yet because we can talk as much as we want, but I truly believe that the performances tend to get better over time. It has nothing to do with the person because I don’t think the athletes are better now than they were before. I don’t think it has to do with the person, I think it has to do with knowledge and technology.”

Nurmagomedov family gracie comparison

Former middleweight title challenger turned podcaster and pundit Chael Sonnnen has compared the Nurmagomedov family to ju jitsu and mixed martial arts pioneers the Gracies.

Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has recently been joined in the UFC by two of his relatives. Cousins Abubakar and Umar Nurmagomedov have both signed with the promotion bringing even more strength to the family name. So much strength that Sonnen has begun comparing them to MMA royalty, the Gracies.

The legendary Gracie family were pivotal during the early beginnings of MMA in the 1990’s. Royce Gracie showed the world how a smaller man can out grapple and submit much bigger opponents. He and his family quickly started a revolution that brings us to MMA as we see it today. Gracie family members still have an impact on the sport with fighters consistently coming through and appearing on the biggest and best promotions.

Speaking on his podcast, Sonnen offers the Nurmagomedov family high praise when comparing them to the pioneers of MMA and ju jitsu, he said.

“It seems to me that the Nurmagomedov’s, in many ways might be the next Gracies. I don’t believe that anyone will ever surpass the Gracie family in the ultimate hierarchy of mixed martial arts. They just did too much and they just did it at the right time. Yeah, they’re were a lot of them and they’re still coming through. They’re still coming! Second and third generations are still coming through. I don’t believe anyone will ever surpass them even if they have the numbers on their side.”

“Let’s look at what the
next best thing may be. If you’re talking about power in numbers, if you’re
talking about bloodline. It would seem the Nurmagomedovs are right there in
line to be number two for MMA family royalty.”

Do you believe the Nurmagomedov family is second strongest family name in MMA history?

History was at stake when Charles Oliveira made the trip to the Octagon to fight Christos Giagos on the prelims of tonight’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil.

The flashy, constricting submission specialist had scored 10 tapouts in his eight-year UFC tenure. The number tied him with UFC and MMA pioneer Royce Gracie for the most of all-time. The current lightweight and sometime featherweight had an up-and-down UFC career at times. His grappling, however, was always one of the most dangerous single skillsets in mixed martial arts.

The Brazilian mat technician proved why once again in Sao Paulo, submitting Giagos with a rear-naked choke. He finished UFC foes with six different submissions. With this latest win, he now passes Royce Gracie for the record of most submissions in UFC history. He’s submitted Jeremy Stephens, Clay Guida, Darren Elkins, and Myles Jury, among others.

Oliveira is now in a class of his own in a fitting piece of UFC history after two longtime fighters had retired on the card. Watch his record-breaking submission here:

10 UFC Fighters Who Quit On The Stool

These 10 UFC fighters decided to quit on the stool in between rounds:

The post 10 UFC Fighters Who Quit On The Stool appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

The concept of quitting is a taboo subject in mixed martial arts.

But in the heat of the battle in the Octagon, even some of the toughest human beings on the planet can be brought to their physical and mental breaking point.

To prove it, in this article, we’ll tell the stories of 10 UFC fighters who came to the painful conclusion that they had no other option left but to cast the stigma aside and quit on their stool.

Chris Leben

Leben is one of the toughest fighters to have ever set foot in the Octagon, which made it all the most shocking when he waved the white flag following the first round of his fight with Uriah Hall at UFC 168 in late 2013.

The already bloodied Leben, who had a reputation for possessing a granite chin and having the ability to take ungodly amounts of punishment, was attempting to take the fight to Hall in the dying seconds of the opening round when he suddenly ate a lightning-quick right hook flush to the face that floored him with a few more shots connecting cleanly on the mat before the bell saved him.

Leben rose back to his feet like a zombie afterwards and staggered back to his corner dazed and confused, asking his corner if the fight had been stopped.

They assured him that wasn’t the case, but that fact didn’t seem to put his mind at ease.

”I’m done man, I’m done,” Leben suddenly said. “Stop it.”

It was a poignant moment to see such a battle-hardened warrior admit that he had nothing left, and even more so in hindsight given that it would later emerge that Leben really was done.

After all the wars he’d been in over the years, both inside and outside of the cage, ‘The Crippler’s’ memorable career came to an end that night.
