Bellator 258’s co-main event matchup between former UFC fighters Yoel Romero and Anthony Johnson has been postponed after Romero failed to clear pre-fight medical testing.

According to the statement by Bellator, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson will remain part of the Belltaor Light-Heavyweight Grand Prix facing an alternative opponent “as soon as possible”.

The matchup was set to be the organizational debut for both fighters with Romero leaving the UFC in 2020 after a failed title bid against Israel Adesanya, and Rumble returning from his retirement in 2016.

Whoever was to win this pivotal matchup would continue on in the Grand Prix facing off next against current Bellator Light-Heavyweight champion Vadim Nemkov who moved forward after defeating Phil Davis at Bellator 257.

On the other side of the bracket sits the former Bellator double champion Ryan Bader who will face off against former UFC fighter Corey Anderson later in the year.

As it stands there has been no word on who will replace Romero and face Johnson in the Light-heavyweight Grand Prix, but Romero will have to sit on the sidelines for a few more months before he can reapply for clearance and gear up to make his Bellator debut.

Aside from this fallout, the event will continue as planned with the headliners Sergio Pettis and Bantamweight champion Juan Archuleta to headline the night.

Bellator

Bellator has announced a light-heavyweight Gran-Prix is set to take place.

An anonymous source with knowledge of the announcement reported the news to MMA DNA earlier today.

Bellator have since confirmed the story during a press conference.

To no one’s surprise, newly signed knockout artists and former UFC title challengers Yoel Romero and Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson will be joining the action at 205 in their Bellator debuts. Although to a certain shock, Scott Coker has matched up these powerhouses to fight each other on April 16th!

Ryan Bader, the former kingpin of the division will also look to stake his claim back on the title. Bader was defeated by Fedor Emeilianko’s protege, Vadim Nemkov in a series of attacks in round two. While Bader may not get his revenge on Nemkov immediately, he will have a chance to redeem himself against another familiar opponent in Lyoto Machida. “The Dragon” knocked out Bader in their first outing in 2012. The two will meet once again on April 9th.

Nemkov now wears the crown at 205. He will take on former foe Phil Davis in a rematch. The two fought to a split decision back in 2018 with Nemkov getting the nod from the judges. This time the title will be on the line, come April 16th.

Another name that will be thrown into the mix is Corey Anderson. “Overtime” made quick work of Melvin Manhoef in his debut under the Bellator banner last November. He has since called out for a title shot against Nemkov. However, the new signings of “Rumble” and Romero have left the title picture complicated. Anderson will fight highly-touted debutant Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov.

Ngannou

One-time UFC heavyweight title challenger, Francis ‘The Predator’ Ngannou continues to wait on his potential next Octagon outing, and while a second title tilt eludes the Cameroonian bruiser, he’s voiced his interest in a possible clash with the soon returning, Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson.

Comfortably sitting as the number-one contender at heavyweight, the knockout ace has scored four straight wins since decision losses to current champion, Stipe Miocic, and fellow one-time title chaser, Derrick Lewis.

Most recently featuring at UFC 249 in May in Jacksonville, Florida, Ngannou finished Jairzinho Rozenstruik with a barrage in just twenty-seconds, following a trio of opening-round knockout wins over former division champions, Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez, to go with a second career triumph over Curtis Blaydes.

Unbooked since that May result over Rozenstruik, Ngannou has been tentatively targeted to meet with the above-mentioned, Miocic at a pay-per-view event early next year, although, a date or event has yet to be nailed down by the promotion.

Growing impatient with the lack of movement in the heavyweight division, and with the activity of champion, Miocic in particular, Ngannou has voiced his interest in matching opposite the incoming returner, Johnson.

Yeah, I would be very interested in that fight,” Ngannou explained when asked by Brian Campbell from Morning Kombat earlier this week. (Anthony) Rumble Johnson is a guy that I respect a lot. I know him as a person, and I admire him as a person. It would be great to share the Octagon with him, no matter if it’s for the title or not.

Even beyond Rumble Johnson I still have some dreams and some aspirations,” Ngannou said. “But I have [to] stay focused and realistic, and deal with the situation right now. Obviously, that question has popped up before, and I would be down for that fight. It would [be] such a great fight, and it would be such an honour to fight Rumble Johnson.

Johnson, a former two-time title challenger at light heavyweight, is slated to make his highly-anticipated Octagon return in early 2021, snapping a three-year hiatus following his UFC 217 title challenge defeat to then 205-pound best, Daniel ‘DC’ Cormier.
