Almost 25 years since the birth of the UFC, it’s with a heavy heart that we look back in disbelief at just how many fighters who once set foot in the Octagon, so vibrant and full of life, are sadly no longer with us.

In this article, we’ll recall the harrowing circumstances surrounding the death of 10 stars who had fought on the sport’s biggest stage, and whose passing shocked the MMA community to its very core.

Tim Hague

Former UFC heavyweight fighter Tim Hague’s premature passing at the age of 34 last year due to injuries sustained in the boxing ring was a painful reminder of just how dangerous combat sports can be.

Hague had compiled a 1-4 run during in the UFC between 2009-2011 and then moved on to successfully compete for other promotions like WSOF and King of the Cage in the years that followed.

Between 2015 and 2016 his form started to take a dramatic dip though, losing three fights in a row by way of knockout, then a 33-second TKO loss just a few months later in July.

That would prove to be Hague’s last ever MMA fight, but unfortunately, he didn’t hang up his gloves, turning to professional boxing instead.

He’d fight to a unanimous decision loss in the boxing ring that September, then suffered a first-round TKO loss in December. Undeterred, he then took an MMA-boxing hybrid fight billed as ‘superboxing’ in April of 2017 and was TKO’d in 40 seconds.

After that punishing succession of concussive defeats over a relatively short period, Hague should not have been licensed by the Edmonton Combative Sporting Commission to undertake another boxing bout just three months later against Adam Braidwood, an independent report would later conclude.

However, Hague was allowed to fight and quickly found himself outmatched by Braidwood, leading to him being floored no less than three times in the opening round.

The fight wasn’t stopped and so Hague continued to endure a one-sided beating in the second round that saw him dropped once more before finally being brutally KO’d.

Hague regained consciousness afterward and made his way out of the ring helped by his corner, but backstage he began complaining of a severe headache and was vomiting, leading to him being rushed to the hospital.

Two days later Hague was declared dead due to a traumatic brain injury.  Combat sports in Edmonton were subsequently banned for a year as a result of his tragic death.

As 2016 rapidly draws to a conclusion and we take stock of the year gone by, one trend that casts a long shadow is the alarming number of past and present MMA fighters who’ve died over the past 12 months.

Unfortunately the sport of mixed martial arts is still too young for this to simply be a case of stars passing away due to old age. In fact, with the age of the 10 fighters listed here ranging from just 25-49 years old, we are left having to come to terms with the fact that these were 10 lives that were simply taken far too soon.

A knee-jerk reaction would be to assume that these deaths occurred due to injuries they sustained in the cage, but the truth is that only one of the ten passed away in that manner – although we can surely all agree that’s one too many.

As you’ll read in the pages to follow however, the reasons for the others deaths are just as hard to accept, from sudden medical emergencies to apparent suicide, from freak accidents to cold-blooded murder.

Two men have been arrested and charged in the hit-and-run murder case of former UFC fighter Ryan Jimmo.

According to MMA Fighting, Edmonton Police have charged 23-year-old Anthony Getschel with ‘second degree murder, criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and fail to stop at scene of accident involving death.’

The passenger in the vehicle, 21-year-old Jordan Wagner, has also been charged with ‘accessory after the fact to murder.’

Jimmo was killed Sunday night after a parking-lot incident outside of an Edmonton sports bar with Getschel and Wagner resulted in the former UFC fighter getting out of his car. While attempting to walk back to his vehicle, Getschel ran down Jimmo from behind and subsequently fled the scene.

An autopsy on Jimmo’s body revealed his cause of death to be due to blunt force trauma. Edmonton authorities located the vehicle days after the incident, on Tuesday, which led to Getschel and Wagner’s eventual arrests.

Another tragedy struck the mixed martial arts community this week. UFC veteran and former MFC light-heavyweight champion Ryan Jimmo sadly died in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Initial details were sketchy, but it was reported that he’d been hit by a car and later died from the injuries in hospital. Tributes poured in for the 34-year old Canadian, who went by the nickname ‘Big Deal,’ and was described by friends and family as a gentle soul.

The incident was later revealed to be a hit-and-run, the suspect was still at large as of this past Monday (June 27, 2016), and what started as a terribly tragic event was quickly developing in to a homicide case. Now, according to a report on Global News, police have found the suspect vehicle involved in Jimmo’s fatal hit-and-run after a number of widespread appeals.

Edmonton police were asking for info or the known whereabouts of this black pickup, and it now appears they have located the vehicle. Further details remain undisclosed at this stage, but homicide detectives have taken over the case and the truck is being examined by a forensics team.

Jimmo was 19-5 as a professional mixed martial artist, and became popular for his heavy hands and unique celebrations after victory. Everyone that knew him said he was truly a great person to be around.

Luke Harris trained with Jimmo for 10 years at the Hayabusa center in St. Albert, and had some touching words to describe ‘Big Deal’ with:

“He was just a pleasure to be around. If you know Ryan, he’s never a guy that’s too serious. He’s serious when he’s in the cage and looks like a big tough guy, but I mean, he’s probably the gentlest, easy-going guy you’d ever meet with an absolutely huge heart,” Harris said. “It’s a big tragedy losing a guy like that. Especially 34 and such a special person.”

A former coach of Jimmo, Peter Martell, had the following to say after the Canadian’s sad passing:

“I knew Ryan inside and outside of the gym and he was a nice guy. He was a gentle soul, he was always happy, always joking. I don’t think I ever heard him say anything bad about anybody,”

Ryan Jimmo’s tragic death has touched the combat sports world once again, at a time when we are already reeling from the numerous losses of 2016. If you’d like to pay a donation to the GoFundMe page that has been set up to bring Jimmo’s body home, the link is here: https://www.gofundme.com/2bm77gc
