Santiago Ponzinibbio says he can officially return to the Octagon.

The welterweight from Argentina hasn’t fought since he knocked out Neil Magny in November of 2018. Since then, he has been dealing with a bevy of injuries, but he says he can now finally return.

“I had an injury that put the breaks on my career,” Ponzinibbio told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “I was doing well and I was close to a world title, but I’m now recovered and really happy I’m now able to return to the octagon and now I’m looking for a big fight to make that return.”

Ponzinibbio is looking at returning in June and says he should get a top guy when he returns.

“My work is well documented,” Ponzinibbio said. “I have 15 fights in the company, a seven-fight winning streak, four knockouts, I knocked the No. 8 guy twice, so the work is there. Injuries happen, it’s part of the game, but I’m going to give it my all in my return, win that fight and be right there to fight for the world title.”

Who he will fight is unknown at this time. But, Santiago Ponzinibbio mentions the likes of re-booking the Robbie Lawler fight. Or perhaps fighting someone like Nate Diaz or Anthony Pettis.

No matter who it is, Ponzinibbio makes it clear he wants a big name.

“A top-five or a big name,” Ponzinibbio said. “Sometimes it’s not a top-five, but maybe a former champion like Robbie Lawler, Rafael dos Anjos, those are people who have great names in the company. Or Nate Diaz or [Anthony’ Pettis, big names that may not be in the rankings, or a top-five who’s not know much but who can give me a shot at the title.”

In the end, Santiago Ponzinibbio remains confident he will return in June and be in the title picture after just a win or two.

“Maybe two, maybe one [win], but I don’t care about that right now,” Ponzinibbio said. “I’m just focused on getting big fights so I can do my job, keeping building my name, and the title is going to come as consequence. I know I have all the weapons to be a world champion and I’m ready, so that’s going to come naturally.”

Who do you think Santiago Ponzinibbio should fight in his return?

A massive welterweight matchup is reportedly being targeted for UFC 245 later this year.

According to a report from MMA Junkie, the Las Vegas-based promotion is working on a bout between former 170-pound champion Robbie Lawler and Santiago Ponzinibbio. No bout agreements have been signed as of this writing, per the report. The UFC has also not yet made the fight official.

Lawler is on a three-fight losing streak at the moment; having fallen to names such as Rafael dos Anjos, Ben Askren, and Colby Covington. His last victory came against Donald Cerrone in July of 2017 at UFC 214. Ponzinibbio is on a seven-fight win streak and hoping for a big win over a household name in Lawler.

The Argentinian powerhouse owns victories over names such as Zak Cummings, Gunnar Nelson, Mike Perry, and Neil Magny. With a victory over Lawler, Ponzinibbio would be a likely candidate for a title eliminator.

UFC 245 will go down live on pay-per-view (PPV0 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 14. Currently, one championship fight is on deck for that card, that being a women’s bantamweight fight between Amanda Nunes and Germaine de Randamie. Check out the updated UFC 245 card below.

Welterweight contender Santiago Ponzinibbio is open to a move to lightweight if he gets a crack at current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Ponzinibbio is on a seven-fight winning streak, having most recently knocked out Neil Magny last year. However, he is only No. 9 in the rankings and seems low in the pecking order for a title shot.

Looking to get into title contention, “Gente Boa” believes a win over Tyron Woodley would do just that, having called out the former champion multiple times already. But there are other opportunities that interest him as well, such as being the first person to defeat Nurmagomedov:

“Khabib, he’s 27-0, I can finish this guy, I know,” Ponzinibbio told media this past weekend when asked about his dream fights. “The first guy to beat this guy, is an exciting opportunity too.”

There’s always the possibility of Nurmagomedov clearing out the top contenders in his division and moving up to welterweight as well. That wouldn’t surprise Ponzinibbio for one:

“Maybe, maybe,” Ponzinibbio added of Nurmagomedov moving up to 170. “Why not? He’s a big guy for 155.”

But would he be able to make the move down to 155 if a fight with Nurmagomedov presented itself?

“I can do [it],” he concluded. “For [a] good opportunity, I can do that.”

Ponzinibbio expects to be back in action by the end of this year.

What do you make of his comments? Do you think he can beat Nurmagomedov?
