The UFC’s annual Madison Square Garden pay-per-view (PPV) event is in the books. UFC 230 provided some great bouts and moments for fans in New York.

Daniel Cormier defended his title against “The Black Beast” Derrick Lewis in the main event, Chris Weidman and Jacaré Souza put on a show for the fans in an instant classic middleweight co-main event. The rest of the PPV main card was entertaining and not to mention the prelims provided us with some fantastic fights.

After a whirlwind weekend of fights, it can be difficult to organize your thoughts regarding the outcomes. After all, there were a total of 12 fights at UFC 230. That’s why we here at LowkickMMA have done the legwork for you.

Here are the six biggest takeaways from an insane UFC 230.

“DC” Has Claim At Being GOAT

At this point in his Hall of Fame career, it can be argued that Daniel Cormier is in the running for greatest of all-time.

The 39-year-old Cormier will most likely hang up the gloves after he fights Brock Lesnar in the first quarter of 2019. If he beats Lesnar as most expect he will, he will retire with a record of 23-1(1) with the only loss being to his rival Jon Jones.

Whether he is competing at light heavyweight or he is defending his title at heavyweight, “DC” just gets it done. He is a winner in every sense of the word.

His victory over Derrick Lewis was expected, but the manner in which Cormier beat Lewis is what continually impresses fight fans. ‘DC” didn’t have to absorb one power punch from “The Black Beast.” He was able to execute his game plan to a tee.

It’s my belief that not only does Cormier have a claim at being the GOAT, but I believe he has dominated time and again that he is deserving of that title.

UFC 220 emanated tonight (Saturday, January 20, 2018) from the TD Garden in Boston, MA. The card was topped by a big man title doubleheader, as heavyweight kingpin Stipe Miocic defended his title against budding star Francis Ngannou, while 205-pound champ Daniel Cormier put his belt on the line against Volkan Oezdemir.

The light heavyweight champ not only emerged with his title intact, but he would earn an extra $50,000 for his Performance of the Night. Oezdemir had some success early with his hands, touching – and at times, even cracking – Cormier through the first few minutes. DC obviously respected the power coming at him, but he turned the tide with his own flush right hand. He took down the wobbled challenger soon after, advanced to the back, and cinched the choke right at the end of the round. Only the bell saved Oezdemir. DC picked up where he left off in the second. After another takedown, he advanced to the crucifix position, and pounded out “No Time” with right hands.

The other Performance of the Night went to Abdul Razak Alhassan, who stretched Sabah Homasi in their rematch on the undercard. The fight began more methodically than their barnburner first encounter, but it soon devolved into the same kind of brawl. A full-power uppercut connected cleanly on Homasi’s chin from the Ghanian, sending him crashing backward, unconscious before his head bounced off the canvas. Alhassan pocketed an extra $50,000 for the jaw-dropping knockout.

The Fight of the Night went to main card featherweights Calvin Kattar and Shane Burgos. Kattar handed the previously unbeaten Burgos the first loss of his career with a simultaneously gorgeous and devastating third-round knockout. Kattar controlled much of the first round with his jab and leg kick, stymieing the aggressive Burgos’ offense. The New York native charged back in the second, connecting with hard counters that bloodied Kattar. Seemingly with the momentum on his side, Burgos soon found himself in serious peril. A long straight right hand from Kattar put Burgos on wobbly legs. Before he could recover, an uppercut sent him reeling backwards, and as he ducked to avoid the follow-up blows, he was met with another picture-perfect uppercut. Burgos was blasted off his feet, smashing into the canvas. The two heavy-handed strikers each banked an extra $50,000 for their wild scrap.

UFC Fight Night 210 – 145lbs: Shane Burgos Vs. Charles Rosa

No one saw this match up coming, but after Zubaira Tukhugov failed a drug test, Charles Rosa was left opponent – less, but not for long. Shane “Hurricane” Burgos stepped up to the challenge on short notice and will now be taking on the Brazilian in UFC fight night 210.

Shane Burgos (8-0) and Charles Rosa (11-2) are actually going to make for a very interesting fight. Burgos, who is 5 feet 11 inches is two inches  taller than Rosa, but the height is not really going to be a big advantage considering how agile Rosa can be.

Rosa had a very challenging debut in the UFC and was put up against Dennis Silver in Stockholm, however, he managed not only come out alive, but actually won the fight. Since then he went on to win two more and lost one to Yair Rodriguez.

Both fighters are excellent finishers who know how to put a fight to bed. It is really going to be an exciting fight – one for the crowds. They are relentless and are not going to while away time on the back foot trying to defend for too long.

Prediction – Burgos is our winner here as he has the edge technically and while on both feet. But make no mistake! Rosa can very well surprise us all again like he did in his debut.
