Stipe Miocic Feels ‘Crapped On’ By UFC

Like many UFC fighters, reigning heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic isn’t too pleased with the promotion regarding fighter pay.

In fact, the Cleveland-native recently described the situation as ‘terrible’ and ‘not fair’:

“[It’s] terrible,” Miocic said on The MMA Hour. “Things definitely need to be changed. Something’s gotta change. It’s not really fair.”

Miocic is coming off of a star-building performance, as he scored a first round knockout over veteran Alistair Overeem last September at UFC 203 in his home of Cleveland. Miocic headlined the event, which sold out the Quicken Loans Arena, but despite his performance, he said that he felt ‘crapped on’ by the UFC:

“I just felt like I was kinda crapped on a little bit,” Miocic said. “I try to do things right and work with them, and they just didn’t give me a great deal. That’s my own fault, but also they knew what they were doing. They took my kindness for weakness.

“They told me it was the best deal they could do, and I said, oh okay, great. And then come to find out, it wasn’t.”

As far as why exactly it wasn’t the best deal, Miocic revealed that he actually made less than Overeem, who was the challenger. According to the Ohio Athletic Commission (Via MMAFighting.com), Miocic received a $600,000 payout, while Overeem was rewarded $800,000.

The champion feels as if this was a ‘slap in the face’ by the UFC:

“Blah, blah, blah, blah. They just made up some excuse, like that’s the contract you signed,” Miocic said.

“You’re making money off me in my hometown, and you’re giving the man that’s a challenger who’s never won the title in the UFC, you’re giving him more money?

“It definitely should change. But the fact that my challenger made more money than me in my last fight was just kind of a slap in the face.”

Miocic currently doesn’t have his next fight booked, but he did say that he is targeting a May return to action. He also seemed optimistic that he would be able to work out his contract issues with the UFC.

What do you make of the champion’s comments?

After knocking out Fabricio Werdum to become the undisputed heavyweight champion last May, Stipe Miocic successfully defended his title for the very first time in the main event of UFC 203 this past weekend (September 10, 2016) from his home of Cleveland, Ohio. Despite getting dropped early on, Miocic battled back to score an impressive first round stoppage over longtime veteran Alistair Overeem.

Miocic has a few options for his next title defense, but his name was also recently brought up by former longtime light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones, a man who has teased a jump to heavyweight for quite some time.

Despite currently serving out a temporary suspension that could potentially transform into a two-year suspension, “Bones” said that he’d be the ‘challenge of a lifetime’ for Miocic.
Today (September 13, 2016), Miocic responded to the call out, saying that although Jones is a ‘very nice guy’, he’d be open to fighting him:

“I’ll fight whoever,” Miocic told TMZ. “He’s a great guy, we’ve talked before, very nice guy to me. Like I said, I’ll fight whoever they want me to fight. If they want me to fight Jon, I’ll fight Jon or whoever they want me to fight next — Cain (Velasquez) JDS (Junior dos Santos), (Fabricio) Werdum — I don’t care.”

At this point in time, however, it seems as if Werdum and Velasquez are the leading men for a title shot. Werdum got back in the win column at UFC 203 as well, scoring a decision victory over Travis Browne. Velasquez’s most recent win also came over Browne, as the ex-champion knocked out “Hapa” in the first round of their UFC 200 bout.

Who would you like to see Miocic battle next?

UFC 203 was arguably one of the strangest cards in MMA history. Leading up to the pay-per-view show in Cleveland there were already a number of bizarre incidents. Perhaps most noteworthy was the elevator accident that caused CB Dollaway to be removed from the card. Following the ‘hellevator’ saga, the UFC 203 card got underway, and things continued on the same note. There’s no doubt the event was exciting and great to watch, but also fraught with oddities.

During the co-main and headlining bouts there were a number of very interesting moments. Let’s start with Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne. The former champion Werdum defeated Browne by unanimous decision, but the fight could easily have been stopped when ‘Hapa’ called time. Perhaps the referee thought Browne was having problems with his glove, it would later become clear that he’d actually suffered a broken finger. After defeating his rival, Werdum would kick coach Edmond Tarverdyan in a post-fight scuffle. A gruesome image of Browne’s finger invading Werdum’s eye would later emerge too.

Ouch

Then came the main event action between Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem. It was a wild affair, with both men scoring knockdowns in the early going. Many criticized ‘The Reem’ for running during the fight, truth be told it was probably more due to him being groggy from the punishment he’d absorbed. Miocic defended his title with a clean knockout, but then Overeem had a conspiracy theory to share in the post-fight interview.

The Dutchman claimed Miocic had tapped out during an early grappling exchange on the canvas. Joe Rogan reviewed the footage on the big screen, and it appeared ‘The Demolition Man’ was wrong. Either way, it was certainly a continuation of the overall quirky feeling surrounding UFC 203. Jimmie Rivera also suffered an eye poke during his decision win over Urijah Faber, stating he could not see properly after the fight.

Joe Rogan’s Reaction

During the most recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience, the UFC color commentator reviewed the madness of UFC 203. Sitting with Duane Ludwig, TJ Dillashaw and Bas Rutten, Rogan had a predictably vivid reaction to the brutal injuries at UFC 203.

“His finger is literally knuckle deep in Werdum’s eye. That’s fucking insane. Something really needs to be done about these eye pokes man. The UFC owned Pride, why can’t they use their gloves? The Pride gloves meant that fighters couldn’t extend their fingers fully”

“It’s almost like they are waiting for something really serious to happen. Look at Michael Bisping; he suffered a detached retina. I think maybe that was from a kick from Vitor Belfort, but he certainly has problems with his eye now. They actually filled it with oil to protect his retina, that’s why one of his eyes are black now.”

Jon Jones Says He Would Be “Challenge Of A Lifetime” For Stipe Miocic

Former longtime UFC light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon Jones is currently dealing with a possible anti-doping violation that forced him to be pulled from his scheduled UFC 200 (July 9, 2016) title fight with bitter rival and current champion Daniel “DC” Cormier. The situation has yet to be resolved, but “Bones” has hinted that positive news could be coming. If the ex-champion does indeed avoid a two-year suspension, he’d likely return to the 205-pound division where he appears to have some unfinished business, but he may not remain there forever.

In fact, Jones has teased a possible jump to heavyweight in the past, and it could be a very realistic possibility. “Bones”, when he does fight, has come dangerously close to cleaning out the light heavyweight class, and he also has the size to compete at heavyweight.

If he were to indeed make the move up, he’d likely find himself in a huge right off the bat, and he recently touched on a potential title fight with reigning champion Stipe Miocic on his official Twitter account. When asked about the possible scenario, “Bones” said that he’d be the ‘challenge of a lifetime’ for Miocic:

The reigning heavyweight king secured the title with a brutal first round knockout over Fabricio Werdum last May. He followed that performance up with another first round stoppage over Alistair Overeem in his first title defense this past weekend (September 10, 2016) at UFC 203.

In a back-and-forth slobberknocker only witnessed in the UFC heavyweight division, champion Stipe Miocic picked up his first title defense in a rousing bout with Alistair Overeem in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., September 10, 2016) UFC 203 from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

The pressure was high in the UFC’s first-ever pay-per-view in his native Cleveland, and Miocic delivered in a big way when he put out Overeem’s lights with a torrent of ground and pound. But it wasn’t without some adversity, as “The Reem” stayed fleet of foot to counter Miocic, actually putting him on the ground with a well-timed shot at one point.

The Dutch striking legend went for a guillotine which he thought made Miocic tap; yet the champion remained stalwart to continue trading shots with the former K-1 Grand Prix champion, each fighter rocking each other at one point. Ultimately, the Croatian-American firefighter picked up his biggest-ever win by knocking out one of the most dangerous fighters in the world.

Alistair Overeem Is Going To Feel Sad Taking Stipe Miocic’s Belt

Legendary Dutch kick boxer Alistair Overeem has held titles in multiple major combat sports promotions including Strikeforce, DREAM, and K-1, but he has yet to get his hands on the UFC heavyweight championship. “The Reem” will finally get the chance to capture UFC gold tomorrow night (September 10, 2016) in the main event of UFC 203 against Stipe Miocic. Overeem will attempt to get the job done in enemy territory as the fight will take place in Miocic’s home of Cleveland, Ohio.

Despite giving up home field advantage, Overeem appears to be supremely confident heading into the bout, and for good reason. The No. 3-ranked heavyweight has won four straight including three stoppage victories over the likes of Stefan Struve, Junior Dos Santos, and Andrei Arlovski. “The Reem” plans to continue his streak against Miocic, and he even went as far to say that he’ll feel ‘sad’ taking the title from the Ohio native:

“What can I say?” Overeem told MMAJunkie. “People are very friendly and very open. I was here during the parade, it was madness. It was good to see a proud state finally accomplish (winning) championships. I almost feel a little bit sad I’m going to take something away from them. But I will be taking that something away this Saturday.”

Overeem will be facing no easy task, however, as the champion has won six of his last seven bouts including four by way of finish.

Who do you see walking away with the heavyweight strap tomorrow night?
