Jon Jones wanted to fight Stipe Miocic next to make his debut at heavyweight.

However, Jones will instead be making another light heavyweight title defense in his next outing. “Bones” takes on Dominick Reyes in the main event of the UFC 247 pay-per-view (PPV) from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on February 8. Speaking at the UFC 247 pre-fight press conference yesterday (Fri. December 13, 2019), Jones revealed he was actually planning on debuting at heavyweight next.

Back in September, Jones teased a “big” fight announcement coming up. Of course, his next fight wound up being against Reyes, leaving some fans underwhelmed given how much “Bones” hyped it up.

Jones reveals his Tweet was in reference to an attempt to land a fight with heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic next. But, the UFC is planning on doing a Miocic vs. Daniel Cormier trilogy next instead, prompting the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization to book Jones vs. Reyes. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I was trying to get a Stipe Miocic fight and I thought that maybe that would happen,” Jones said. “But instead we have Stipe vs. ‘DC’ 3. But at the moment I was so ready to go to heavyweight and stick my hands in some of those big fellas.”

If Jones can get past Reyes next, his plans to move up to heavyweight might still be on the table. Of course, Jones still acknowledges that new prospects will always continue to pop up at light heavyweight, so he could also continue to clean out the division.

“I think it’s a very strong possibility,” Jones said. “Absolutely. There’s always going to be someone next. I feel as though I’ve cleared the division and I’m not waiting around. I’m taking new challenges. I’m not sitting on the title. I’m not hiding from anybody. I chose Dominick because he appears to be the best out of all my contenders and I’m just ready to take over the world.”

What do you think about Jones nearly making his heavyweight debut against Stipe Miocic?

Stipe Miocic is trying to give Daniel Cormier a taste of his own medicine.

Last year, Cormier won the UFC heavyweight title from Miocic with a first-round knockout finish. However, instead of giving Miocic – the winningest heavyweight champion in UFC history – an immediate rematch, Cormier saught a fight with WWE star and ex-UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar. Cormier and Lesnar even had a staredown and shoving match inside the Octagon.

When that fight didn’t materialize right away, Cormier kept busy with a heavyweight title defense over Derrick Lewis, submitting “The Black Beast” inside Madison Square Garden. Cormier promised that, should a fight with Lesnar not happen, he’d grant Miocic a rematch. And so he did.

This time around, however, it was Miocic who stood tall when the dust settled, reclaiming the heavyweight throne with a knockout win of his own. Now, Cormier is calling for a trilogy fight, which will ultimately be the final bout of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career – win or lose. However, now Miocic is trying for a fight with boxing lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, willing to put his trilogy with Cormier on ice, essentially paying “DC” back for the Lesnar drama.

Dana White

Speaking to MMA Junkie, Cormier explains why Miocic’s attempts are “misguided,” and the situation compared to Cormier’s desire to fight Lesnar, is completely different.

“After all that was done last year when I was going to fight Brock Lesnar and I said, ‘I’ll wait for Lesnar, and if Lesnar can’t go I’ll fight Stipe’,” Cormier told MMA Junkie. “I think it’s kind of the same thing (with him trying to fight Tyson Fury). But reality is, it’s vastly different. I think it’s misguided.

“I had Lesnar in my face. He came into the octagon and all that. I’ve got to be honest with you: The moment they said Brock can’t fight, I said, ‘Then let’s give Stipe his fight.’ The moment they said it, I said, ‘OK, find a date for Stipe and I to fight. He deserves his rematch.’

“I think the idea of the way things happened may have been a little bit misunderstood, but it went exactly as I said. From the moment of the fight I said, ‘If Brock doesn’t fight, I’ll fight Stipe.’ When they said, ‘No Brock.’ I said, ‘OK, let’s do Stipe.’”

UFC president Dana White has since suggested both Miocic and Cormier have verbally agreed to a trilogy bout in 2020. However, with Miocic dealing with an injury and no timetable in sight for his recovery, fight fans might have to wait some time for the next heavyweight title defense.

Daniel Cormier Thinks Stipe Miocic Trilogy Could Take A While To Make

If you’re waiting on the trilogy bout between Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic for the UFC heavyweight title, you could be waiting for quite a while.

While UFC president Dana White has suggested both men have agreed to the trilogy, Cormier himself says, given how the UFC’s 2020 schedule is stacking up, the fight could be pushed back until June.

“There’s no time for us to fight until maybe June,” Cormier told MMA Junkie. “The way the UFC quarterly schedule is looking, the UFC essentially, with them announcing Tony (Ferguson) and Khabib (Nurmagomedov) for April, there’s really no time. We’re going to be waiting a little bit.

Cormier would prefer for the fight to happen sooner rather than later, however, he acknowledges that the ball is in Miocic’s court, as he is the champion, and the champ makes the rules.

“It’s tricky,” Cormier said. “I would like it to happen sooner than later, that’s all I would like to say. I feel like the more time I get away from last year’s back surgery, the better I feel, and I’m starting to really feel like myself now. The further I get away from this surgery, the better I’ll be.

“They told me when I did it, after about a year is when it would really start to feel everything was back in order and I’m starting to feel that now. I’m ready to go, but he’s the champ. He’s the champ, he makes the rules. So I’m on standby and I’m waiting to see when this guy says that we’re going to fight.

“When he does, I’ll be prepared. I’ll be ready – even more prepared than the last time because I feel I can prepare better from the very start right now.”

“DC” and Miocic have met twice before. Cormier won the first meeting in the summer of last year, getting the first-round knockout to capture the heavyweight throne. However, this past August, Miocic took the title back with a late finish over “DC,” becoming just the second-ever fighter to do so. Cormier believes himself and Miocic have built up quite the rivalry.

“I think Stipe and I have a fantastic rivalry,” Cormier said. “I won the first fight in tremendous fashion, he won the second fight in tremendous fashion. I feel like we’ve had the first two acts of a three-act drama and we have to do the trilogy fight and eventually we’re going to do that.”

What do you think about Cormier’s comments suggesting a trilogy fight with Miocic could take a while to book?
