Cain Velasquez shares his thoughts on whether he thinks that former UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic should get a title fight.

Cain’s teammate, Daniel Cormier, scored a KO win over Miocic to win the UFC heavyweight title in the main event of the UFC 226 pay-per-view event. This fight took place in July at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, which marked history as Cormier was a two-division champion. DC has since relinquished the UFC light heavyweight title.

Since then, Miocic has stayed outside of the Octagon while he voices his thoughts about why he should get a rematch against DC. While doing promotion for his UFC on ESPN fight against Francis Ngannou, Cain was asked whether this fight makes sense for DC.

“Stipe just put in work when he needed to do it, and he won when he needed to do it. My hat’s off to him, with the guys that he’s fought. I believe he’s been a great champion,” Velasquez said of Miocic (h/t CageSide Press). “I knew just going in and watching him throughout his career, I knew how good he was.

“When [Daniel Cormier] had the opportunity to fight him, I didn’t see anywhere where Daniel would lose that fight. I was pretty confident in that,” he continued. “Just because you were the reigning, defending heavyweight champion, doesn’t mean you get a title shot right away.”

Stipe Miocic has been insisant on a rematch against UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

The pair initially fought back in July when “DC” knocked Miocic out in the first round to capture the gold. Since, Cormier has gone on to successfully defend the title against Derrick Lewis. Miocic recently said that Cormier owes him a rematch.

Speaking on a recent episode of “The MMA Hour”, Cormier explains why he thinks the former champ needs to earn his rematch (via MMA Fighting):

“I understand where he’s coming from because I’ve been there with Jones twice and I’m like, ‘God, I know I can beat him if I can just get another opportunity to do it. I know I can beat him.’ And it burns at you and it eats at you, especially the way that he lost the fight. I get it,” Cormier said.

“But I don’t have to really owe anything. I’ve said that before, I’ve said he deserves it. I’ve said that. He deserves a rematch if I don’t get to fight Brock. I’ve always stood by that. But you can’t just go, ‘Well, you owe it to me.’ I don’t want to sit here and talk bad about Stipe because I like Stipe. I think he’s a good guy.

“He’s a fantastic father. He’s a pillar of the community. He’s a great fighter. I think he’s great. But you can’t sit there and say, ‘He owes me.’ When I lost to Jones the first time, I thought, ‘Man, if I can just get another opportunity.’ I didn’t just sit and wait. I went right back to work at trying to re-earn the opportunity if they weren’t going to give it to me.

“I wasn’t the champion obviously, so the circumstances were different, but I right away scheduled a fight to try to get my way back to that fight and it’s almost like he hasn’t really taken that approach. That’s one of the things where I’m kind of like, what’s going on? Why hasn’t he fought yet still?”

Miocic had a six-fight win streak snapped upon losing to Cormier. Five of those came by way of knockout. He is the most successful champion in heavyweight history, as he’s the only man to have ever defended the championship three times. It will be interesting to see if Cormier and Miocic rematch before “DC” retires.

Daniel Cormier has no plans to grant Stipe Miocic a rematch.

Cormier defeated Miocic this past July with a tremendous first-round knockout. Prior to the defeat, Miocic was the most successful heavyweight champion in UFC history. He was the first man to successfully defend the strap three times. In his fourth defense, however, “DC” was able to render the Croatian-American unconscious.

Rather than granting Miocic an immediate rematch, Cormier instead defended the title successfully against Derrick Lewis at Madison Square Garden. Recently, Miocic suggested Cormier owes him a championship rematch. Cormier went off on his former foe for his comments in a Twitter rant today (Tues., February 5, 2019):

“I don’t owe anyone sh*t!”

“Do you guys wanna know why I’m not fighting @stipemiocic again?”

“Reason 1: he’s being entitled, why have I fought since and he hasn’t. He lost the fight is he still the champ? Reason 2: I’m hurt Reason3: how do I do it better? I beat him in a round last time ?”

Initially, Cormier’s plans were to retire around his 40th birthday. However, with nagging injuries keeping him sidelined, he’ll likely make it past that date. UFC President Dana White has said he believes “DC” has two or three more fights left in him.

Some of those bouts include match-ups against the likes of Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar. Unfortunately, a rematch against Miocic looks extremely doubtful at this point.
