Usually when I’m watching MMA fights on TV, I don’t want to risk a bathroom break in the middle of a fight for fear of missing something important. But with last night’s Strikeforce 135-pound women’s tournament and its three-minute rounds, I felt like I was always just one especially long sneeze away from missing the entire fight.

Not that I don’t understand the thinking behind the abbreviated tournament bouts. If you have to fight twice in the span of an hour, maybe you appreciate an outing that’s more appetizer than entrée.

That is, unless you lose a decision because you got taken down twice and there wasn’t much time to do anything else that might negate that. Then you probably feel like you got screwed, and you also probably feel like you need to hit the treadmill afterwards just so you can get a full workout in.

As middleweight prospect Louis Taylor heads towards his fight against veteran Joe Riggs at Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers 10 in Phoenix, Ariz., he can look back at his Strikeforce debut setback last year as a positive learning experience.

After all, in under a year, he’s gone from losing on a Strikeforce undercard bout to headlining a Strikeforce event on Showtime. Additionally, if he beats his name opponent, the local Chicago fighter could put himself on the map nationally.

“[Riggs is] definitely the most complete fighter I’ve faced and I’m a big fan of his, and he’s paid his dues,” Taylor tells MMAFighting.com. “Right now, basically he’s in my way, so it’s up to me to get him out of my way and keep it moving. I’m looking at him as an opportunity I need. It’s a big step up so it’s up to me to prove I belong in his category or above.”

Ryan CoutureRyan Couture was about 14 years old when he heard his father Randy was going to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It was the spring of 1997, Ryan was a ninth-grader, and the sport — then more commonly referred to as “No Holds Barred” or NHB — was still in its wild west infancy.

“It definitely took some getting used to when I saw the videos of him fighting and hitting people,” he told MMA Fighting. “That was kind of freaky for me at first, but I got over it pretty quick. The more I learned about the sport, the more I grew to love it.”

It would take years, but Ryan would eventually find his own path towards the sport, and on Aug. 13, he’ll become the first son to follow a high-profile father into major MMA when he makes his pro debut on the Strikeforce Challengers 10 show.

Mixed martial arts is a young man’s game, and a young game itself, and because of the combination, we’ve yet to see many legacies passed along from father to son. Other sports have seen countless generations roam their fields and playing surfaces. Baseball had the Bondses and Griffeys, football had the Mannings and Winslows, baseball had the Bryants and Waltons, hockey had the Hulls and Howes.
