T.J. Dillashaw distances himself from retirement following UFC 280 loss: ‘There’s no way I go out like that’

Former two-time undisputed UFC bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw has insisted he will not be calling time on his professional mixed martial arts career, despite suffering a one-sided second round ground strikes TKO loss to division champion, Aljamain Sterling at UFC 280 last weekend.

Angels Camp veteran, Dillashaw co-headlined the promotion’s pay-per-view event against Uniondale native, Sterling, attempting to become the first three-time bantamweight titleholder in the promotion’s antiquity.

However, en route to his eventual second round ground strikes TKO loss to Sterling, T.J. Dillashaw twice suffered a dislocation to his left shoulder – detailing during his post-fight interview with UFC color commentator, Daniel Cormier how he had entered the fight with the pre-existing injury.

Preparing for the championship battle since the beginning of May this year, Dillashaw claimed that at the end of April, he initially suffered the injury, before dislocating his shoulder up to 20 separate times throughout his camp.

Informing referee, Marc Goddard that his shoulder would likely dislocate during the fight at some stage, Dillashaw was allowed to compete regardless, urging Goddard to allow him continue to compete even if he suffered dislocation inside the Octagon.

Tipped to weigh up his future in the sport given his age and championship challenge loss, T.J. Dillashaw, who underwent reconstructive surgery to address a knee injury suffered in his split decision win over Cory Sandhagen in July of last year, insisted he would not be bowing out of the sport in that fashion.

“Sparring was f*cking awesome,” T.J. Dillashaw told ESPN post-UFC 280. “I was doing great in camp against high-level guys, The Juan Archuletas, the Cub Swansons, guys we were bringing in. I was on point, man. I really was looking really good. I was in insane shape. Because of the shoulder situation, I had been working harder on my physical therapy and working on strengthening up my shoulder.”

“The way I felt and the things that were going on, obviously it got worse the closer I got to the fight, but man, I was on point – because of me having one arm and that changed my game plan up, but I was so focused on the combos I can hit with my right hand and kicks that I felt amazing.”

T.J. Dillashaw plans triumphant return from shoulder injury

Undergoing surgical procedures to address injuries to both shoulders during his time away from the Octagon between 2019 and last year, Dillashaw is expected to go under the knife again – likely sidelining him for a period of a year or more.

“I don’t feel that my ability has gone anywhere, maybe a little bit of want,” T.J. Dillashaw explained. “This sport is a tough one, and then all the bullsh*t I go through here and there kills a little bit of the fire, but I think my competitive edge will always drive me. So I’m not done. You guys will see me again. There’s no way I’d go out like that, and if I come back, I’ll get back to the top.” (Transcribed by Yahoo! Sports)

Former two-time UFC bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw remains confident of regaining the throne this weekend at UFC 280 against titleholder, Aljamain Sterling – even admitted himself as a “cheater” following his well-publicized positive test for the banned substance, erythropoietin (EPO) back in 2019.

Angels Camp native, Dillashaw, a former two-time undisputed bantamweight titleholder, tested positive for EPO back in January 2019 following a first round knockout loss to Henry Cejudo in a flyweight title siege.

Banned for a period of two years in a retroactive suspension by anti-doping agency, USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency), Dillashaw returned to the Octagon with a close, split decision triumph over common-foe, Cory Sandhagen in July of last year.

Challenging Uniondale native, Sterling this weekend in Abu Dhabi, UAE at UFC 280, Dillashaw dropped a questionable line at today’s pre-fight press conference, self-labelling himself as a “cheater” during a back-and-forth with the incumbent division best.

“You’re going to get your ass whooped by a cheater, motherf*cker,” T.J. Dillashaw said to Aljamain Sterling.

In another line referencing his past indiscretions with USADA, Sterling, who has remained sceptical as to whether Dillashaw is still utilizing performance-enhancing drugs since his 2019 flagging, was urged to administer his own test.

“He (Aljamain Sterling) can test me himself,” T.J. Dillashaw said. “He can test these nuts in his mouth.”

Attempting to land his second successful title defense, Sterling successfully retained and unified the division titles against former champion, Petr Yan back in April of this year in a split decision effort in Jacksonville, Florida.

In his pair of title reigns, Dillashaw earned his premier title with a knockout win over Brazilian veteran, Renan Barao, before then reclaiming the title with a second round KO win against two-time opponent and rival, Cody Garbrandt in 2017.

T.J. Dillashaw believes UFC 280 title win over Aljamain Sterling lands him ‘135lbs GOAT’ status

A victory over current undisputed UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling next weekend for former two-weight division champion, T.J. Dillashaw would land the Angels Camp native as the first three-time titleholder at bantamweight in the promotion. And according to him, would score him GOAT status at 135lbs as a result.

Scheduled to co-headline UFC 280 next weekend on ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Dillashaw will compete for the undisputed bantamweight title against Uniondale native, Sterling – with the latter looking to retain his crown and secure his second championship knockback.

Last time out, Dillashaw headlined against common-opponent, Cory Sandhagen back in July of last year, defeating the Colorado native in a close, split decision victory.

Dillashaw returned from a two-year retroactive USADA suspension in his win against Sandhagen, after he tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO) following a January 2020 knockout loss to Henry Cejudo in his pursuit for flyweight gold.

T.J. Dillashaw plans to solidify his status as bantamweight GOAT

Along with past opponent, Dominick Cruz, Dillashaw is the only other two-time undisputed bantamweight champion in the history of the division. And according to the Duane Ludwig trainee, a win over Sterling would, in turn, solidify his claim as the greatest bantamweight of all time.

“When I’m champ again it’s going to be great,” T.J. Dillashaw told ESPN during a recent interview. “I never left. I never lost my belt in this weight class. Yeah, I was stripped, but I never actually physically lost it. People forget how dominant I was because I hadn’t been in there. I hadn’t been performing. I hold a lot of records in the bantamweight division and just because of the time off, they forget.”

“So I’m going to have to remind them all who the best is, who the best pound-for-pound is, and that 135 pound GOAT, I’m coming for it,” T.J. Dillashaw explained.

During his Octagon tenure, Dillashaw has defeated the likes of Renan Barao, Raphael Assuncao, John Lineker, Cody Garbrandt, and the aforenoted, Sandhagen.

Xtreme Couture head coach, Eric Nicksick has shared his thoughts on this month’s undisputed UFC bantamweight title fight between his student, champion Aljamain Sterling, and former titleholder, challenger, T.J. Dillashaw – praising the dynamism of the latter and crediting him for revolutionizing standup fight at the bantamweight level.

Nicksick, the head coach of several leading UFC fighters including undisputed heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, and the aforenoted, Sterling – along with Ray Longo and Matt Serra, will prepare the latter for his trip to Abu Dhabi, UAE later this month to tackle Dillashaw at UFC 280.

Defending bantamweight champion, Sterling, most recently co-headlined UFC 273 earlier this year against former champion, Petr Yan in the pair’s rematch – edging out the Russian with a close, split decision win in Jacksonville, Florida.

As for Dillashaw, the former two-time division kingpin headlined in his promotional return in July of last year against common-foe, Cory Sandhagen, earning a title fight with a close split judging win of his own. The outing came as T.J. Dillashaw’s first since serving a two-year retroactive suspension issued by USADA after he tested positive for the banned substance, erythropoietin (EPO).

Commenting on the style of Dillashaw and the overall game of the Angels Camp veteran whilst breaking down Sterling’s incoming title defense, the above-mentioned, Nicksick highlighted the former’s dynamic style at bantamweight.

“It’s nice getting matched up against who I think is one of the best coaching minds in the game (Duane Ludwig),” Eric Nicksick told Mike Owens during an interview with LowKick MMA. “It’s also nice not having to stand across from him, you know what I mean.”

“All in all, I think T.J. (Dillashaw) brings a full MMA skillset from the feet to the floor, where he’s very dynamic in all areas,” Eric Nicksick explained. “I think it’s a great matchup to be quite honest with you.”

Eric Nicksick heaps praise on challenger, T.J. Dillashaw ahead of UFC 280

Credited with some of the best footwork and angle creation in the sport and the bantamweight division as a whole, T.J. Dillashaw has been praised for his part in revolutionizing that aspect of mixed martial arts by Nicksick.

“I think when you change stances a lot, your defense suffers,” Nicksick said of T.J. Dillashaw. “I think guys like to switch stances because of what offense it brings out for them, but you get into a focus of purely offense. For me as a coach, if you’re switching stances, your defense suffers – then you shouldn’t be switching stances, because you’re going to get your ass knocked out.”

“… To me, I think T.J. does really well in his stance switch because his defensive soundness remains the same out of both orthodox and southpaw,” Nicksick explained.
