Khabib Nurmagomedov is on top of the mixed martial arts (MMA) world right now. He recently secured a massive fourth-round submission (watch full highlights here) over Conor McGregor in the main event of last weekend’s UFC 229 from Las Vegas. Khabib’s performance was by far the biggest of his undefeated career.

All is not perfect in his world, however. The Dagestani champion caused a chaotic scene when he jumped into the crowd to fight McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis. To top it off, three of his teammates rushed the Octagon and got into it with McGregor. They were arrested but Mcgregor didn’t press charges.

That adds up to Khabib being on the sidelines for quite some time, and possibly even worse. He could conceivably be stripped of his belt and will be fined. The champion could have a lot of time on his hands as a result. And he might be able to spend more time with his family, something he chooses to keep under wraps unlike McGregor.

McGregor is often seen with longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin and their son, Conor Jr. The much quieter Khabib has obviously chosen a more secluded lifestyle.

Khabib’s father Abdulmanap says he’s going to punish his son tougher than the UFC does, but we see precious little from Khabib’s wife.

The undefeated lightweight king has yet to even reveal her name to the public. “The Eagle” has two children with his rarely-seen bride. They had a daughter in 2015 and a son in 2017. While her name is not known, they supposedly call their son Mohammed.

The couple lives in Makhachkala in the Republic of Dagestan. Khabib has often criticized McGregor’s absence from fighting due to the birth of his son. He claimed he never stopped training when his children were born.

McGregor’s Coach: Khabib Is ‘The Boogeyman’ At All Divisions

John Kavanagh is doing everything in his power to make sure Conor McGregor shows up to UFC 229 rust-free.

It’s been almost two years since Conor McGregor has fought inside the UFC’s Octagon.

Back in November 2016, McGregor defeated Eddie Alvarez for the 155-pound championship. That was the last time we saw the Irishman in the cage. The MMA megastar decided to take some time off and participated in a big-money exhibition boxing match against Floyd Mayweather.

Now, with a new champion at lightweight, McGregor is itching to get back to the top of the UFC world. He’ll fight Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 229 next month in Las Vegas. “The Eagle” is a dominant 155-pound champion that has yet to lose in his fighting career.

It’s quite a difficult thing for McGregor to return to after two years on the sidelines. In that regard, McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, recently said in an interview with The MacLife that he’s providing a training camp that is attempting to prevent the dreaded “ring rust”:

“I think it’s how you approach training – I think if your gym environment and how you compete in the gym is very separate from how you compete – then for sure there will be ring rust,” Kavanagh said.

“But if you’re regularly putting yourself in stressful types of sparring situation, which is the best we can get in the gym environment, it more resembles competition then. So, Conor – specific for this training camp we have had a lot of very intense training sessions, sparring sessions – and it’s done in the environment he’s going to compete in.

“We have spectators for a lot of the spars – so we’re trying to make the training environment mimic as close to the competition environment so there isn’t as much as a disconnect between the two of them.”

The Undefeated Champion

Kavanagh also talked about the appeal of handing “The Eagle” his first career defeat.

Nurmagomedov is the only undefeated champion in the UFC at the moment. For the McGregor camp to take that away would be a major feather in their cap:

“Absolutely. I think it’s no mystery to say that Khabib is the boogeyman at all divisions at the moment. There isn’t another unbeaten champion that I can think of. And just that constant, aggressive wrestling style – for anyone that’s tough to face. So to actually beat that guy, the guy that everybody is saying is unbeatable, it’d be a huge feather in the cap to do that.”

The UFC lightweight division is in focus right now, as the New York debut for the promotion beckons. UFC 205 is set for Madison Square Gardens in NYC, and as usual pulling together the biggest stars for the November 12 pay-per-view has not been a simple process. The UFC lightweight division is in focus right now, as the New York debut for the promotion beckons. UFC 205 is set for Madison Square Gardens in NYC, and as usual pulling together the biggest stars for the November 12 pay-per-view has not been a simple process. Originally widely rumoured to feature Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor for the lightweight title, the story took a few twists and turns this week. First off UFC president Dana White and Khabib Nurmagomedov chimed in.

‘The Eagle’ claimed, with a confirmation from White Himself, that he was next in line for the title shot. Sharing via Twitter that he’d signed the bout agreement for UFC 205 against Alvarez, Nurmagomedov laid waste to weeks of rumours, or at least it appeared that way. Following this stream of head-spinning announcements came another curve ball. Apparently ‘The Notorious’ was still injured from his UFC 202 bout with Nate Diaz. Was the Irish star out of the running for UFC New York?

Who’s It Gonna Be?

After the announcement of McGregor’s injury came reports to the contrary. The featherweight champion was fine and still gunning for a spot at UFC 205. All the while the UFC featherweight division was like the poor relative on the outskirts of town, waiting for an invitation to the big party. Dana White had previously stated McGregor would have to vacate the 145-pound title to fight at any other weight again. Clearly confirmation of anything in that regard is still wanting.

Now we await next Tuesday, where the official line-up of UFC 205 will be confirmed. In the meantime, Ariel Helwani confirmed that neither McGregor or Alvarez have officially been offered a fight against each other. Khabib Nurmagomedov on the other hand, he’s already signed two bout agreements, as per his recent Tweets:

What About Conor?

That’s an interesting question, one that ‘The Eagle’ has his own opinion on. As per a report on FOX Sports, Nurmagomedov feels McGregor should fight his way from the bottom:

“I promise I become the lightweight champ, I promise all the lightweight fighters, Conor is not going to fight for the belt. He’s going to have to earn it. From the bottom up.”

UFC 155-pound killers Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson and Russian powerhouse Khabib Nurmagomedov simply do not like one another.

The two were originally set to meet at The Ultimate Fighter Season 22 Finale (TUF 22 Finale) last December, however Nurmagomedov was forced to pull out of the contest citing an unfortunate injury suffered in training camp.

Another attempt to reschedule the contest was made for UFC on FOX 19 this past April, but this time it was Ferguson who would suffer an injury forcing him out of the bout. Nurmagomedov would remain on the card to take on UFC newcomer Darrell Horcher instead, defeating the UFC rookie via second round TKO.

Ferguson is coming off a second round submission win over another UFC newcomer, Lando Vannata, and is scheduled to step inside the Octagon with former 155-pound champion Rafael Dos Anjos at The Ultimate Fighter Latin America 3 Finale.

While we will have to wait for a potential Ferguson vs Nurmagomedov bout down the road, ‘The Eagle’ hasn’t refrained from taking shots at ‘El Cucuy’ through social media. Nurmagomedov took to Instagram to take shots at Ferguson regarding his United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) tests:

“This moron Ferguson has concerns about my doping tests. Hey idiot, I was tested 11 times, and 11 times antidoping agency found too much courage in my samples, unlike your cowardly eyes, that you was hiding when we met in person.”

The undefeated Nurmagomedov currently awaits his next bout after successfully returning against Horcher after a near two-year layoff, hoping for his long awaited shot at lightweight gold.

Nurmagomedov and newly crowned champ Eddie Alvarez have exchanged words of their own over the past few weeks, so it may not be long before we see ‘The Eagle’ finally get his opportunity to challenge for the throne of the talent stacked UFC 155-pound division.
