Former Bellator head man Bjorn Rebney might not be a name you expected to be associated with Georges St-Pierre as he attempts to finally make his way back into the UFC Octagon (or any MMA cage), but apparently that’s what will go down.

According to a report from MMA Fighting, the two will spearhead an ‘industry re-defining’ announcement this Wednesday that also includes major MMA stars Cain Velasquez, TJ Dillashaw, Donald Cerrone, and Tim Kennedy. The announcement was revealed today and will take place on a conference call on November 30.

It can’t be denied that it is entirely possible the announcement will be about the initial creation of a fighter’s union, as St-Pierre, Cerrone, Dillashaw, and Kennedy have all been extremely forthright in their stance about better fighter treatment and pay in the UFC, one of the hottest topics in all of MMA. Things got worse in that regard when the UFC was sold to talent giant WME-IMG for a record-setting $4.2 billion this summer, making fighters realize their worth compared to what they were getting paid.

St-Pierre recently revealed WME-IMG had taken an offer from previous UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta off the table. They then allegedly drug their feet on offering him a realistic fight, leading St-Pierre and his legal team to declare he was a ‘free agent’ while still under UFC contract. Dillashaw has been heard speaking out against the UFC’s practice of paying fighters, and fan favorite Cerrone recently said he was willing to head a potential fighter’s union.

What Rebney’s role in the potentially game-changing announcement remains unclear, but one thing is crystal: fighters have needed effective representation for far too long now, and the growing anti-establishment sentiment amongst fighter needs to be quelled for an athlete base that puts their health and future on the line each and every time out to the cage.

It should be noted that all fighters named in the press release except Cerrone are clients of Creative Artists Agency (CAA), WME-IMG’s main competition in the MMA representation business. The fact St-Pierre is represented by CAA has been whispered about as a reason why WME-IMG has been unwilling to meet the legendary former champion on his terms, instead calling it a ‘great financial risk’ to re-introduce him to fans.

GSP may have taken that as an insult, and it now looks he’s decided to do something about it. Is this the change so many fighters have been striving for?

If the Ontario Athletic Commission approves, Tim Kennedy will meet Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 206 next month.

Officials announced the bout Saturday night during UFC Fight Night 101. The middleweight contest would be part of the main card on December 10 from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, if Gastelum is approved.

Gastelum was given a suspension by the New York Athletic Commission earlier this month after failing to weigh-in for a planned fight with Donald Cerrone. The bout was scratched and the former Ultimate Fighter winner was told he would need to move up to 185 pounds from welterweight.

Kennedy was scheduled to meet Rashad Evans at both UFC 205 and UFC 206, but the former light heavyweight champion has been deemed medically unfit to compete by both commissions.

The day after Thanksgiving, the MMA world is still digesting the unfortunate news that light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has been forced out of December 10’s UFC 206 main event against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson.

It’s the second such withdrawal in three scheduled bouts for ‘DC,’ as he pulled out of his awaited rematch with archrival Jon Jones in the main event of UFC 197 this past April, and ‘Bones” removal of the re-scheduled bout at UFC 200 due to a failed USADA test certainly didn’t help matters.

Cormier famously beat ‘Rumble’ by submission at 2015’s UFC 187 after Jones was unceremoniously removed from his bout with Johnson following a concerning hit-and-run accident involving a pregnant woman in his adopted home of Albuquerque, New Mexico. That lead to a mess at the top of the shallow UFC 205-pound division, and no one is quite sure where it will head.

However, Cormier and Johnson aren’t going to rip into each other like he and Jones did; in fact the opposite is true. That was made evident by the champ’s public apology to ‘Rumble’ on Twitter directly after the news broke today:

Johnson will similarly even-keeled in his own response to the mess, noting that worrying about his latest lost title fight would do absolutely nothing before wishing ‘DC’ nothing but the best in his recovery:

The UFC is reportedly looking for a short-notice replacement to fight ‘Rumble,’ but that may be a tall order to find someone willing a competitor most consider to be the hardest hitter in all of MMA.

Set for December 10 from Toronto, UFC 206 is quickly falling apart after losing the Rashad Evans vs. Tim Kennedy bout earlier this week. It promises to be a tough sell on pay-per-view (PPV) in the middle of a Holiday season where the UFC is already asking fans for a ton of their time and hard-earned cash, so stay tuned for any new updates as they arise.

With Rashad Evans Out of UFC 206, Who Should Tim Kennedy Fight Next?

Tim Kennedy has his hands tied. After opponent Rashad Evans was denied licensing by the New York and Toronto commission – due to brain injury – Tim Kennedy was left fishing for a partner, again. With UFC 206 fast approaching Kennedy has taken to twitter to call out anyone that will listen, even Brock Lesnar.

“Hello, is there anybody out there?”

But let’s face it, Brock Lesnar is freakin HUGE and besides being a behemoth, he’s also suspended due to a doping infraction. Patrick Cote, while a native Moose jockey (canadian), is supposedly out due to an elbow injury…so where does that leave us?

 Kennedy vs. Silva

Anderson Silva has become a journeyman of some sort. While we still believe in his voodoo magic, his last fights have been  a wonky last minute fight at light heavyweight against Daniel Cormier, and before that a razor thin lost against the count Michael Bisping. With a pulled fight against Uriah Hall, it seems he’ll take on whoever poses a challenge, so why not Kennedy? Despite his age you never really know what Anderson will do next, and with a tough well rounded fighter like Kennedy, sparks could fly.

Kennedy vs. Vitor Belfort

Though usually a 205′er Kennedy has already said he would fight at a catchweight to compensate for Vitor’s “dadbod”. This is an interesting matchup because though Vitor’s the bigger man, at 6’0 he’s not exactly a large light heavyweight and has fought at middleweight in the past. While Vitor can dish out a beating in the first round, Kennedy can definitely take one (check out his strikeforce match with Luke Rockhold) and keep on ticking. I predict this fight is won in the third round.

While these two seem the most likely with Gegard Mousasi looking for a big fight, Derek Brunson, and Whittaker tied up this weekend, and Kelvin Gastelum suspended for missing weight, who do you guys want to see Kennedy fight?

Tim Kennedy Calls Out Anderson Silva For UFC 206

UFC middleweight fighter Tim Kennedy is in need for his next fight. Kennedy was supposed to fight former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans at next month’s UFC 206 event, but Evans was pulled from the event. This is the second time that the bout between both fighters has been removed from a fight card.

Just like the New York commission did, the Ontario Athletic Commission also denied Evans a license for the fight.

Kennedy called out former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva via Twitter to take the fight on short notice just like he did in his last fight against UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 in July in which he lost by unanimous decision.

“@SpiderAnderson I know it’s been a minute since you won a fight,” Kennedy said on Twitter. “I might be an easy match up. Bad wrestling, horrible striking. #ufc206 ?”

Following Silva’s fight with Cormier, Silva stated that he was disappointed in the UFC for not giving him an appropriate level of respect for taking the fight, so it appears that Silva is not willing to take this short notice fight with Kennedy, but stranger things have happened in MMA.

UFC 206 takes place in Toronto, Canada at the Air Canada Centre on Dec. 10th. The main card will air on PPV (pay-per-view) while the prelims will air on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. A light heavyweight title rematch between champion Cormier and top contender Anthony Johnson is scheduled to main event UFC 206.

Rashad Evans has found it rather difficult to say the least when it comes to his attempts to make his 185-pound debut, as he has now been denied a license to compete by both the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) and the Ontario Ministory of Tourism, Culture and Sport in the span of a few weeks.

Evans was scheduled to make his middleweight debut against Tim Kennedy at UFC 205 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from New York City, but was denied his license and the bout was called off. The bout was re-booked for UFC 206, however, Evans license troubles again would force him off of the card.

The UFC has released an official statement on the matter which you can read here:

“UFC has been notified by the Ontario Athletic Commission that it has declined to approve a license for middleweight Rashad Evans, based on the recent medical issue that prohibited him from competing at UFC 205 in New York City. As a result, Evans’ rescheduled bout against Tim Kennedy, set for UFC 206 in Toronto on Saturday, December 10, has subsequently been cancelled.”

“The UFC organization takes the health and safety of all athletes competing under the UFC banner very seriously and has encouraged Evans to take all the appropriate time to consult with his physicians and properly evaluate his medical status prior to scheduling any future bouts.”

The Ontario Ministory of Tourism, Culture and Sport (courtesy of MMA Fighting) has also released a statement of their own regarding the matter:

“The Office of the Athletics Commissioner is responsible for upholding medical requirements, which are put in place to protect the safety of contestants. In regards to the UFC 206 event on December 10, Mr. Evans has not cleared Ontario’s medical licensing requirements. We can confirm that his proposed bout has not been approved but are unable to comment further on his private and confidential medical information.”

As for Kennedy, he has yet to be given a replacement opponent for UFC 206 in Ontario, however, early reports suggest Kelvin Gastelum as the early choice for the Special Forces veteran. We’ll keep you updated as Evans’ situation progresses….
