Six Likely Candidates for MMA Fighter Union President

“My thoughts concerning the state of Wisconsin repealing the collective bargaining rights of public employees? I’m glad you asked…”

Several recent, seemingly unrelated news stories in the MMA world have shared a common theme- unions. It’s the lobbying efforts of one union, Dana White insists, to blame for the UFC’s failure to gain a foothold in New York. And some pessimists credit a fear of unionized fighters–more than simple altruism–for Zuffa’s decision to provide accident insurance for its fighters. With all of the talk about a potential MMA Fighters Union, we took a moment to ponder who’s likely to throw their hat in the ring for union president…

Frank Shamrock: If you want to know what role “The Legend” has played in the history of our sport, just ask him. Never one to shy away from an opportunity to self-promote, Shamrock has been fighting for his relevancy in the sport ever since he departed from the UFC. His verbal battles with Dana are legendary, even prompting him to start a pseudo non-profit organization to call him out- that’s a devotion to hatred I can only hope to know. As a self-proclaimed champion of the downtrodden and sworn enemy of the Zuffa regime, Shamrock’s role as kingpin in a fighter union would finally balance the scales of power in his rivalry and allow him to resume his long-abandoned place at the top of the fighter chain.

Big John McCarthy: Fighter safety was little more than an oxymoron when Big John started officiating. Since those early days he’s played a leading role in looking out for the folks that put it all on the line. Outside of the cage, he lobbied to make sure that the Unified Rules were fair to fighters and fans alike. It’s no secret that Dana has had a grudge against him, which coincided perfectly with his inability to get re-licensed in Nevada.  Big John has found several ways to earn an income in the sport without donning latex gloves, including running his own gym and serving as a analyst on The Fight Network, so maybe an opportunity to protect fighters in a new capacity would be of interest to him as well.

Chael Sonnen: What is there to explain, really? The guy has an addiction to corruption. He’s shown a clear desire to hold office, but remarkably proved too shady for a job in politics.  Chael is never afraid to take the bully pulpit and hammer out a firm stance on a controversial topic, and when pinned down to a losing position he’s willing to say whatever is necessary to weasel his way out the hole he’s dug. He’s no stranger to cutting corners and skimming money from the top, which makes him a natural to head up a union. If he was willing to involve his mother in a real estate scheme, there’s little doubt he’d throw his “Uncle Dana” under the bus for a quick buck. Unless he seriously considers ditching a couple of his more nefarious personalities, he’s unlikely to glove up for awhile, and with his numerous other careers on hold this seems like a perfect fit for his unique set of morals.

Randy Couture: A true icon of the sport, “The Natural” has been involved in many of the UFC’s most memorable fights both inside the Octagon and inside the courtroom. Together they’ve made a lot of money, but following multiple break ups they’ve always seemed more reluctant bedfellows than chummy business partners. We’re only a few weeks into his latest retirement and Couture is already investing in new MMA ventures. With a stable of fighters at his side and as an obvious leader in our community he could no doubt foster support for a union throughout its ranks. He was willing to fight Zuffa in court to gain freedom from what he considered to be an unfair contract, and was very vocal about what he considered to be a lack of appropriately large paydays; maybe the time has come for him to walk that road once more.

Tito Ortiz: Even when it seemed suspiciously like he was simply looking out for himself, Tito always made it clear that he was actually fighting Dana White for every fighter’s rights. With his career in the UFC teetering on extinction, even Tito must realize his days as a fighter are numbered. He’s talked about the need for a fighter’s union—and his desire to run it–for years now, and with no other organization able to afford his hefty price tag his options will be limited. So what characteristics would you look for in a fighter union president? Eloquence? Check. Strong business acumen? Check. A trustworthy circle of friends to form his cabinet? Check.

BJ Penn: With the many turns that his career has taken, it’s clear that he’s unlikely to achieve the ambitious title of “greatest fighter to ever live”, and that may be a tough pill to swallow for a megalomaniac like Penn. Throughout his entire career, BJ has sought to dictate the terms. When Joe Rogan attempts to get his thoughts after the fight, he directs you to go to BJPenn.com to get his take. Before conducting an interview with him, you have to confirm that you do indeed like him very much. He even sued the UFC after vacating his belt to stop them from crowning a new champion. Penn is already a legend in this sport, but if he wants to rise to demigod status with the rest of the fight world serving as loyal subjects, this is his best shot.

UFC 132 is set to take place on July 2, and this is shaping up to be one of the better cards in recent memory.

It is so good, that four of the cards on the preliminary card could very easily be main card fights.

The main event of the evening pits bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz in the first defense of his UFC title against the only man who holds a victory over him, former WEC Featherweight Champion, Urijah Faber.

The co-main event of the evening is a fight that has been in the making for nearly a year, as a legend of the sport, Wanderlei Silva, takes on hard hitting and iron-chinned Chris Leben.

In addition, Tito Ortiz fights for his job against an Ultimate Fighter winner, Ryan Bader, Carlos Condit takes on Dong Hyun Kim in what could very well become a No. 1 contender match, and Dennis Siver, fresh off an upset over George Sotiropoulos, takes on “Handsome” Matt Wiman.

So here is the breakdown and predictions for the main card.

After his much-publicized confrontation with Tito Ortiz last week at the UFC Fighter Summit, Matt Mitrione has been very open to a possible bout with the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.

During Monday’s episode of “The MMA Hour”, Mitrione said he pitched the idea to UFC president Dana White following the altercation and reminded him that he would do whatever it took to have the potential bout finalized.

“At the end of it I was like, ‘Just to let you know, if Tito really wants to run his mouth about this…I will cut down to as close as to 205 as possible,” Mitrione said during his segment with Ariel Helwani.

“So all these boys who say I’ll never fight him, I told Dana and I told Mr. Fertitta that I wanted to cut weight to whoop his a– if he would take that fight.”

Mitrione, who competes in the UFC heavyweight division, made disparaging remarks directed at Ortiz, and more specifically his ex-girlfriend and former adult film star, Jenna Jameson, that had prompted Ortiz to confront Mitrione.

Mitrione said he did not have any intention of fighting Ortiz, but he said he had to defend himself, after Ortiz became aggressive.

“I started to square up a little bit, and then he kept saying, like anybody who doesn’t really want to fight, they’re like ‘hit me, hit me then, hit me,” he said.

“That’s why, in the video, I was like, ‘Well, you’re the one being aggressive. If you want to be aggressive, then let’s scrap. …I came and introduced myself. I didn’t come up here to fight you.'”

For now, Mitrione will look to take his frustrations out on his next opponent, Christian Morecraft, who he’s scheduled to face at UFC Live in June.

And as for Ortiz, Mitrione said he is willing to fight him, but if Ortiz decides to turn down the offer, he said he is fine with that decision, too.

“I think that Tito didn’t necessarily want to fight me about it, but I think he felt like, as a man, he had to pop up and do something about it. And I respect that. I respect that completely,” Mitrione said.

“But if he’s not satisfied with what went on,” he continued. “If he’s not satisfied with his Twitter monologues or soliloquies or his wife’s…then we can scrap. If not, if you’re cool with it, then I’m cool with it too.”

Tito Ortiz Linked to Bizarre Murder Conspiracy Court Case

(You need how much? Damn. OK, but I want some new XXL leather headrests for my G6.)

According to a story that appeared in the Las Vegas Review Journal today, former UFC light heavyweight champ Tito Ortiz has been tied to a murder conspiracy court case that involves a father who is accused of hiring a hitman to kill his son, who is alleged to have slept with both his father’s ex-wife and ex-girlfriend before testifying in February that his old man had used $160,000, which he fraudulently obtained through a burglary insurance scam, to fuel his crack habit.

You know a family is dysfunctional if it make’s Tito’s seem like the Cleavers.

Apparently the only reason Tito’s name got out in reference to the case is that the accused, Keith Harriman, who is petitioning to get a Nevada state appointed lawyer due to financial reasons put up a $500,000 bond to be able to leave jail and live under house arrest until the trial is over and he revealed when pressed that “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” fronted him the cash.

According to the report, Keith Harriman’s brother, Wayne Harriman, a used car salesman from Las Vegas, was the person Ortiz credits with mending his relationship with UFC president Dana White.

Keith’s son Dominick was shot at least nine times Aug. 27 while working at Wayne Harriman’s car lot. The shooter was never identified, but according to Keith Harriman, the hit could have been a result of his son’s sordid past and criminal history or the fact that he was was an informant for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

No word on when the movie comes out, but it’s likely that Ortiz will be played by one of these two actors.

Tito Ortiz must remember what it’s like to be in holding so he took pity on Las Vegas murder suspect, Keith Harriman (49) who has been held on 12 Felony Counts in connection with a plot to murder his 27 year old son.

At a preliminary hearing in February, Dominick Harriman testified his father wanted him dead because he told insurance fraud investigators his father’s $160,000 burglary loss claim was a scam to feed a crack cocaine addiction. Dominick Harriman also said his father was angry because he had slept with both his dad’s ex-girlfriend and his ex-wife.
Dominick Harriman was shot at least nine times Aug. 27 at the used car dealership where he worked for his uncle, Wayne Harriman, at Nice Cars of Nevada, 3401 S. Decatur Blvd. The shooter has not been identified.

Bail was set at half a million dollars and Ortiz put up the bond. It was revealed that Ortiz has a long time relationship with Wayne Harriman, a used car dealership owner and the brother to the murder suspect. Ortiz may have felt he needed to help out the brothers as Las Vegas Review Journal reports:

…Wayne Harriman helped bridge a rift between Ortiz and UFC chairman Dana White that led to a six-fight contract.
