MMA fans were confronted with what appeared to be an April Fool’s Day joke after news broke of Tony Ferguson’s withdrawal from UFC 223’s main event against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

But unfortunately, it was not a joke, and the lightweight title fight fans have been clamoring for and promised three times in the past fell through for the fourth time on Sunday due to an apparent knee injury Ferguson sustained just six days from fight night.

As a kind of consolation, the UFC whipped up an impromptu fight between featherweight champion Max Holloway and Nurmagomedov, who will compete for the lightweight belt in Ferguson’s absence.

Holloway, despite having recently defended his 145-pound title in December, posted a cryptic response to the news on Twitter immediately following the news of Ferguson’s injury:

Holloway seems to be alluding to a war of attrition against the undefeated Dagestani as the two prepare for battle in Brooklyn on Saturday night.

UFC President Dana White confirmed Ferguson’s injury and Holloway’s replacement to quell the confusion regarding the unfortunate timing of this debacle, having fallen on April Fool’s Day.

How will Holloway fare against Nurmagomedov? Will the short-notice replacement help or hurt his chances at becoming a simultaneous two-time UFC champion?

Well, well, well.

Oh how the tables have turned.

Injury ridden lightweight contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov has spent the last two years on the sidelines since scoring a victory over current divisional kingpin Rafael dos Anjos.

The undefeated Dagestani wrestler was scheduled to make his return later this month (April 16, 2016) against Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson in the main event of UFC on FOX 19 from Tampa, Florida.

Ferguson has been riding a hot wave as of late, and had previously warned Nurmagomedov to stay healthy and show up on fight night.

Now, however, “El Cucuy” has been forced off of the card due to an injury per FOX Sports.

This news has forced the UFC to bump the originally scheduled co-main event between former title challenger Glover Teixeira and former champion “Suga” Rashad Evans to main event status.

With such little time to find a replacement for Ferguson, “The Eagle” will not compete on the card, but will instead be given a new bout for a later date.

Teixeira, a Brazilian slugger, has picked up back to back stoppage victories over the likes of Ovince St. Preux and Patrick Cummins after suffering consecutive defeats to Jon Jones and Phil Davis.

Evans, on the other hand, recently returned from quite a lengthy injury layoff, dropping an extremely disappointing decision to Ryan Bader at October 2015’s UFC 192. He will look to get back on track against Teixeira in just a few weeks time.
