Good news for fight fans! The seemingly cursed fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson is being targeted once again by Dana White. The two UFC lightweight’s have been matched up five times in the last five years. The fight has of course fallen through every time in the most unfortunate and bizarre circumstances.

Back in December 2015, you’ll remember these two were meant to scrap it out at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale. Nurmagomedov was of course forced to withdraw due to injury. The UFC rescheduled the fight for April, only for the fight to be called off once again. This time, however, Ferguson was the reason due to a medical issue. The two titans ran through and defeated the other fighters on the roster. They were swiftly rescheduled for the third time for the interim title at UFC 209. Once again, the fight was called off with Nurmagomedov failing to cut weight. White and the UFC booked the fight again for the undisputed lightweight title at UFC 223.

The divisions two best fighters were finally going to fight it out and settle the rivalry. Or so everyone thought. Ferguson unfortunately tripped on a cable during his media run and blew his knee out a week before the fight. Al Iaquinta faced off against Nurmagomedov instead, and the Russian won the undisputed title via an unanimous decision win.

Tony Ferguson miraculously bounced back from injury and defeated Anthony Pettis at UFC 229, continuing his impressive 12-fight UFC win streak. Khabib continued his undefeated run and the two looked like they were destined to meet in a clash for the ages. So, with one final throw of the dice, White and the UFC booked Nurmagomedov vs Ferguson for UFC 249. Shortly after, the world descended into chaos as the COVID-19 pandemic swooped across the globe. Nurmagomedov was trapped in Russia as a result, and the fight was ditched once again.

Tony Ferguson, after bizarrely putting himself through 2 weight-cuts in a month, fought and lost to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. Gaethje became the UFC interim-lightweight champion in front of no crowd and was next in line for Nurmagomedov. Ferguson’s 12-fight win streak was snapped, and his golden ticket to an undisputed title shot seemed lost for good.

However, Dana White has recently given the cursed fight a lifeline. The tempting of the apocalyptic wrath of the MMA Gods continues. (H/T Sports Illustrated)

“If Khabib does beat Gaethje, you get Tony Ferguson another fight, which we’re working on right now,” White told Sports Illustrated. “And hopefully that fight with Khabib happens because I know people want to see it.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fight fall apart as many times as those two. It almost scares me to make the fight again. What’s going to happen? An asteroid comes to earth? That’s the level of bad this thing is.”

White clearly recognises that the hunger for the fight amongst fans is enough to warrant another rescheduling. Despite Ferguson losing, this is the fight to make. Although, White has been recently adamant that Conor McGregor is the next-in-line for Nurmagomedov. However, due to White’s recent spat with McGregor, it seems the organisation is moving in a different direction. McGregor has been very active on social media recently. The Irishman has even taken on the promotional cap by trying to book a charity exhibition fight with Dustin Poirier, without the UFC. White is adamant that McGregor is retired, and is simply baffled by what has transpired.

“This was a weird one,” White said. “This was weirder and different than anything he’s done before. There’s almost a pattern here. When we’re about to do a massive fight—and Israel Adesanya broke a ton of records last week in a global, massive fight—the day before that fight, he starts announcing he’s going to fight this guy and that guy. It’s almost like stealing Adesanya’s thunder. But he does it every time there’s a big fight.”

Khabib isn’t interested in a rematch with McGregor. Khabib vs Gaethje will take place on October 24th at UFC 254. Khabib recently revealed that Dana White has promised him “something special” for his next bout. Rumours suggest that it’s a superfight with UFC legend Georges St. Pierre, but maybe it’s a final match-up with rival Tony Ferguson. Maybe Khabib could go 30-0 in front of a Russian audience?

Charles Oliveira has gone on record to say he believes Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will never actually fight.

Lightweight contender Oliveira is slowly working his way into title contention. Last time out he submitted Kevin Lee at UFC Brasilia to extend his winning streak to seven. At the top, he will find current 155lb champion Nurmagmedov and former interim titleholder, Ferguson. The two men were scheduled to face off at UFC 249 on April 18 to finally settle the rivalry that stretches to 2015.

Unfortunately, Nurmagomedov was forced to withdraw from the event due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and subsequent travel issues. The card was later postponed before being rescheduled. ‘El Cucuy’ will now face fellow contender Justin Gaethje for the interim title on May 9.

This is remarkably the fifth time Nurmagmedov and Ferguson have been booked to fight but never made it to the cage. Oliveira is now convinced the two will never face off. “I think this Khabib fight with Tony Ferguson will never happen,” Oliveira told MMA Fighting. “Something always happens, someone gets hurt. This time was the coronavirus.”

Oliveira does however believe Ferguson emerges victorious from his bout against Gaethje, putting him next in line for the champion.

“Tony Ferguson is in a very good moment in his life, is beating everyone, and (he) has a unique style,” Oliveira said. “I think it would be a tough fight for Justin Gaethje now, because Tony Ferguson was training to fight the champion (and had) an opportunity to become the world champion. So he was definitely training like never before, and Justin Gaethje wasn’t training for a fight.”

“Now that he has more time, he will get better prepared,” Oliveira said of Gaethje. “We know he has heavy hands, hits really hard, so anything can happen. But I still think Tony Ferguson wins.”

Do you agree with Charles Oliveira? Is the Khabib Nurmagmedov vs. Tony Ferguson fight cursed?

With the global pandemic of COVID-19 and the sports world shutting down, many MMA fans are wondering if we will see Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson on April 18.

The UFC has postponed its next three events and UFC 249 will not take place in Brooklyn, New York as expected. Where it will take place is unknown at this time. But, UFC president, Dana White has sent a message to all fans and media members about doubting him that the event will take place on that day.

“If you’re a fan, if you’re a media member, you’d stop doubting, I would imagine,” White said to TSN (via MMA Junkie). “But maybe not. We’ll see.”

“If you asked me questions 10 days ago, I could answer any question you threw at me. I don’t know a lot of things right now. Think about this: Las Vegas shut down the casinos. I never thought I’d ever see that in my lifetime. Khabib and Tony is going to happen. We’re going to make it happen. It’s just going to be a matter of how quickly it would go back to being normal.

“I have my own arena,” White said. “I have my own production. I have everything. I have everything you need to put on events. So there isn’t much that I can’t pull off.”

White joked on Twitter on Wednesday that he will hold the event on the moon. He has said he will go to extreme lengths to make sure this fight happens on that day. But, given no one truly knows when COVID-19 will go away, it is hard to say he will be able to make the event happen.

Regardless, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father has said Dubai is a possible location to host the event. But, if travel bans are still in place, the event may not go forward.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father of Khabib Nurmagomedov, believes UFC 249 will happen on April 18 and knows the perfect location for it.

Nurmagomedov is expected to defend his lightweight title against Tony Ferguson on that date. Yet, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the UFC postponing the next three events, the status of UFC 249 is very much in the air. Dana White said the event would most likely not take place in the United States, so for Abdulmanap, he hopes it takes place in Dubai.

“Most likely it will be Dubai,” Abdulmanap said to RBC Sports in Russia (via MMA Fighting). “Firstly, it’s easier to fight diseases because of the heat. And I think the Emirates will pay for the UFC fight faster and easier. Abu Dhabi may well be, but then, [that’s up to] Dana White. I can’t approve, but there are more chances there.”

The UFC did sign a five-year deal to have one UFC event with a title on the line in Abu Dhabi every year. So, April could very well be the time they go to Abu Dhabi or Dubai for the event.

Even if they go there, the chances of fans being allowed to attend is uncertain. Yet, for the Nurmagomedov’s they don’t care if the event has fans or not.

“Khabib feels great, everything is going according to plan,” Abdulmanap said. “He is not afraid of the coronavirus, we are all mortals. What about empty stands? I think that the audience is good, but without them it is even better.”

Regardless, Dana White has made it clear he will go to extreme lengths to make this fight happen as it is one the world wants to see. Where it will take place is the big question mark right now.

Do you think UFC 249 will take place in Dubai as Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov suggests?

Khabib Nurmagomedov is now 28-0 and defended his lightweight title for the second time. In the main event of UFC 242, the Russian champion dominated Dustin Poirier and submitted him in the third round.

Now, following the fight, the question of who Khabib Nurmagomedov will fight next is a big one. Yet, he believes there is only one person who deserves it and that is Tony Ferguson.

“UFC make decision,” Nurmagomedov said (h/t BJPENN.com). “I think yes, (Tony) deserve this. It’s going to be a good fight.

“You know it’s like, when you’re champion, undefeated, undisputed, even when you’re 28-0. You know it’s like 12-0 in UFC. People are (still) going to talk about ok this guy. Even if I beat Tony Ferguson. After Tony Ferguson they’re going to be like some guy. Tehy’re going to promote him. He’s the guy that is going to beat him. Then, he is the guy that is going to beat him. This is a game you know. Right now, I know Tony is not, after Tony it is not finished nothing.”

Ferguson is currently on a 12-fight winning streak and is the former interim lightweight champion. He is coming off of a TKO win over Donald Cerrone, and before that had another TKO win over Anthony Pettis. During this winning streak, he has also beaten the likes of Kevin Lee, Rafael dos Anjos, and Edson Barboza.

This is very similar to what Khabib Nurmagomedov said before UFC 242. There, he also said it was only Tony Ferguson who deserved the next shot.

“Only Tony Ferguson,” he said. “I think he deserves it. Who else is there? Nobody. Only Tony Ferguson, or nothing.”

Khabib’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, believes that his client fighting former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson would be an easy fight. That is a strong statement to make but Ali has never had an issue with speaking his mind.

UFC President Dana White has made his stance known regarding the next fight for Khabib Nurmagomedov. Although a rematch against former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor makes sense, he would like Ferguson get the next title shot.

At the end of the day, Abdelaziz wants to get Nurmagomedov his biggest payday possible. In his mind, Ferguson “cannot move the needle” when it comes to pay-per-view buys.

“I think it took 11 or 10 fights for (Nurmagomedov) to become champion,” Abdelaziz said to MMAJunkie. “It’s the longest winning streak outside Tony. Now, you can’t be like, ‘Fight somebody who is not going to help you sell pay-per-view.’”

At the end of the day, what is next for Khabib all comes down to the decision made by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. That call will be made on January 29th for his punishment in the role that he played in the UFC 229 brawl. When it comes to Ferguson, Abdelaziz anticipates an easy paycheck for the champ but it won’t be his biggest payday.

“Tony Ferguson is an unbelievable fighter, but I’m telling you, he’s one of the easiest fights for Khabib out there,” Abdelaziz said. “He’s sloppy. He’s slow. Khabib will beat him. He will put a beating on him, a worse (beating) on him maybe than (he did to Conor). The fight will happen, but when it will happen, I don’t know.”
