With the global pandemic of COVID-19 and the sports world shutting down, many MMA fans are wondering if we will see Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson on April 18.

The UFC has postponed its next three events and UFC 249 will not take place in Brooklyn, New York as expected. Where it will take place is unknown at this time. But, UFC president, Dana White has sent a message to all fans and media members about doubting him that the event will take place on that day.

“If you’re a fan, if you’re a media member, you’d stop doubting, I would imagine,” White said to TSN (via MMA Junkie). “But maybe not. We’ll see.”

“If you asked me questions 10 days ago, I could answer any question you threw at me. I don’t know a lot of things right now. Think about this: Las Vegas shut down the casinos. I never thought I’d ever see that in my lifetime. Khabib and Tony is going to happen. We’re going to make it happen. It’s just going to be a matter of how quickly it would go back to being normal.

“I have my own arena,” White said. “I have my own production. I have everything. I have everything you need to put on events. So there isn’t much that I can’t pull off.”

White joked on Twitter on Wednesday that he will hold the event on the moon. He has said he will go to extreme lengths to make sure this fight happens on that day. But, given no one truly knows when COVID-19 will go away, it is hard to say he will be able to make the event happen.

Regardless, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father has said Dubai is a possible location to host the event. But, if travel bans are still in place, the event may not go forward.

Do you think UFC 249 will happen on April 18?

On April 18, Khabib Nurmagomedov will defend his lightweight title against former interim champion Tony Ferguson at UFC 249. It will be arguably the biggest fight in company history and certainly the most eagerly anticipated.

Unsurprisingly the undefeated champion enters this fight a considerable favourite. You can find Nurmagomedov at odds of 1.36 to retain his title. Meanwhile, ‘El Cucuy’ is priced at 3.25 to dethrone the feared Dagestani wrestler. For great offers, bonuses, and fight odds, check out BetEasy.

First things first, it’s impossible to talk about this match-up without pointing out the insane history these two athletes share despite having never fought.

Over the past five years, the UFC has tried and failed to make Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson happen on four separate occasions. Each time this fight was booked before eventually falling through for various reasons.

This has led some to believe the fight is cursed, and they could well be right. Just as things look good for fifth time lucky, a deadly virus turns up and sends the world into meltdown.

Due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the event is currently without a home. The Russian was supposed to be defending his 155lb belt in Brooklyn, New York. However, the state is now in lockdown, and UFC president Dana White is currently in search of a new host country, city, and venue.

If or when the two lightweight fighters finally meet, it will undoubtedly be the most significant test of both men’s careers. Fans are split on who will emerge victorious and with good reason.

The 31-year-old Nurmagomedov has won all of his 28-fights. Since joining the UFC, the Russian has won 12 straight by utilizing his elite-level wrestling to dominate his opponents on the mat, landing ground and pound and sinking in submissions. He holds high profile wins over Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Rafael Dos Anjos. By beating Ferguson, he further enhances his legacy as one of if not the greatest lightweight of all time.

The quirky American is believed by many to be the man to beat Nurmagomedov. At 36-years-old he has never looked better and currently rides a 12-fight winning streak into this fight. Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee, and Rafael Dos Anjos are just some of the top contenders he has taken down during his rise to the top. Ferguson uses insane cardio, great hands, a solid chin, and slick submissions skills to win his fights. He is one of the most exciting guys on the roster both inside and outside the cage. The only reason he is not champion right now is because the UFC stripped him. A former interim champion who never lost his belt, he was stripped due to injury and until now has not had his chance at UFC gold again. He’ll be desperate to take this opportunity in this the most epic of fights.

Whoever wins will be the biggest star in MMA and have an incredibly lucrative fight with MMA’s money man Conor McGregor waiting for them.

“Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib, April 18, is still on and will happen. We’re going to follow these guidelines to not have more than ten people in a row. We’re hoping that this all clears up by April. This fight’s going to happen. No crowd. Whatever it takes. Probably not even going to happen in the United States, but this fight’s going to happen.”

Now the MMA promotion has officially confirmed in a statement that the fight will no longer be taking place in New York, it read.

“UFC is planning on moving forward with UFC 249: Khabib vs. Ferguson in April. The event will not take place at Barclay Center in Brooklyn as previously announced. Barclays Center ticket holders may seek a full refund at the point of purchase. Internet and phone orders will be automatically cancelled and refunded. Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson is one of the biggest and most anticipated fights of all time. On four previous occasions, this fight has been booked, and then fell through. At the moment, it seems like that could well happen again despite the best efforts of the UFC boss and his staff. Let’s hope they can find a suitable and safe venue soon.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father of Khabib, recently suggested Dubai as a potential host location for his son’s upcoming fight. It may take somewhere like Dubai with limited exposure to COVID-19 to make this fight happen.

Nurmagomedov is the undefeated and undisputed lightweight champion with a perfect 28-0 record. The 31-year-old Russian has 12 wins inside the octagon and has beaten the likes of Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.

Ferguson is riding a 12-fight win streak inside the UFC. The former interim champion has back-to-back TKO wins over former champion Anthony Pettis and veteran fighter Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone.
