The most highly-anticipated fight to be made in the UFC’s lightweight division at the moment is a bout between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Both men have been extremely dominant in their lightweight runs, with Ferguson riding a 12-fight win streak, while Nurmagomedov is undefeated in his career at 28-0.

No fight between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov has been made official as of this writing, but it’s expected the bout could happen in early 2020 from Russia. With the potential fight looming, another key competitor in the 155-pound division, Conor McGregor, was asked for his take on the fight. Taking part in a Q&A for Parimatch in Ukraine, McGregor offered his prediction for a Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson fight.

“It’d be an interesting one,” McGregor said. “I think Khabib would probably beat him. Again, you’ve got to see what the circumstances are, anyone can win on any given day. Tony is a formidable fighter also. Very very tough. He does go down, he does get dropped, his guard has been passed, he’s been mounted by a lesser fighter. So I would favor Khabib in that bout.”

As for McGregor, he just announced he’ll return to the UFC in January against an opponent yet to be named. The Irishman would eventually like to fight the winner of Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz, which will take place in November at UFC 244.

Do you agree with McGregor’s prediction for Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson?

Jon Jones is no stranger to having personal issues, but that didn’t stop him from pointing out those of Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson on this day two years ago. Here’s a look back at our story published on this day two years ago that documented this unexpected clash. The following article is presented to you in its original, unaltered form.

Jon Jones fired back at Tony Ferguson’s remarks with a dig at his personal issues.

Jones has been the target of many verbal spats for years, but he was surprised when Ferguson took aim at him. “El Cucuy” is a lightweight, who many believe is deserving of the next UFC 155-pound title shot. The number one ranked UFC lightweight took to Twitter and issued a challenge to Jones.

“Lot Of Shit Talk [Jon Jones]. You Wanna Play Again Like We Did In College? I Bumped Up Two Weight Classes & I’ll Do It Again ? Growth. You Wanna Play Chess I’ll Be Your Huckleberry. Got You In 2 Neanderthal, Talked To Your Pops He Knows Who’s Champ. # Anklepick # DavidVSGoliath”

Jones responded by taking a shot at Ferguson’s personal issues in a now-deleted tweet.

“Wait, when did this beef start!? I thought we were cool!! You over there feeling suicidal Tony?”

Back in March, Ferguson’s wife filed a restraining order against him. This wasn’t due to physical abuse, rather it was done in hopes of getting Ferguson some help after he showcased “erratic behavior.” Many were concerned about Ferguson’s mental health, but his wife dropped the restraining order in April and Ferguson made a successful return at UFC 238 with a TKO win over Donald Cerrone.

Jones followed up by saying he doesn’t understand why Ferguson called him out and claimed the two were discussing possibly training together.

“Lol no, that’s why this is all really confusing to me. Last time I spoke to Tony we were texting each other about possibly training sometime. It’s probably just a publicity stunt.”

The in yet another deleted tweet, Jones apologized for his remarks.

“Definitely should’ve used a better choice of words, deleted that last tweet. My fault, I’m sorry guys.”

Jon Jones has deleted his controversial tweet to Tony Ferguson after “El Cucuy” called him out.

Ferguson took to social media and called out Jones saying he will beat him as he did in college.

“Lot Of Shit Talk @JonnyBones You Wanna Play Again Like We Did In College? I Bumped Up Two Weight Classes & I’ll Do It Again Growth. You Wanna Play Chess I’ll Be Your Huckleberry. Got You In 2 Neanderthal, Talked To Your Pops He Knows Who’s Champ. #Anklepick #DavidVSGoliath,” Ferguson wrote.

Jon Jones then was not impressed and responded with a very controversial tweet that asked Ferguson if he was having suicidal thoughts again.

“Wait, when did this beef start!? I thought we were cool!! You over there feeling suicidal Tony?” Jones responded in a now-deleted tweet.

The UFC’s light heavyweight champion was then asked on social media about the two’s beef which even he was confused about it. Jones said he thought he and Tony Ferguson were cool.

“Lol no, that’s why this is all really confusing to me. Last time I spoke to Tony we were texting each other about possibly training sometime. It’s probably just a publicity stunt,” he wrote.

He also then apologized for his tweet and deleted it.

“Definitely should’ve used a better choice of words, deleted that last tweet. My fault, I’m sorry guys,” Jon Jones wrote.

Both Jon Jones and Tony Ferguson are currently without fights booked. Yet, all signs point to El Cucuy taking on Khabib Nurmagomedov next. Jon Jones, meanwhile, says he is holding out for a ‘super-fight’ but a fight against Dominick Reyes makes sense.

Everyone wants a piece of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Including former interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson. “El Cucuy” is currently awaiting news of his highly-anticipated Octagon return.

In the meantime, he has taken to Twitter to call out “Bones,” referencing their old college wrestling days.

“Lot Of Shit Talk @JonnyBones You Wanna Play Again Like We Did In College? I Bumped Up Two Weight Classes & I’ll Do It Again ? Growth. You Wanna Play Chess I’ll Be Your Huckleberry. Got You In 2 Neanderthal, Talked To Your Pops He Knows Who’s Champ. # Anklepick # DavidVSGoliath”

Jones is one of the most – if not the most – dominant champions mixed martial arts (MMA) has ever seen. He has never been legitimately beat inside the cage, and comes off a split decision victory over Thiago Santos to retain his 205-pound title earlier this summer. It’s believed Dominick Reyes will be the next man up to challenge “Bones” for the light heavyweight title. However, Jones also has the option to jump up to heavyweight and make his debut at the weight class.

As for Ferguson, he is on a ridiculous 12-fight win streak in, arguably, the UFC’s toughest and most talented division. He’s expected to be the next challenger for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s lightweight title. It’s rumored the pair could be booked to finally square off in Russia come early 2020.

Dillon Danis revealed there is some movement in a potential grappling match with current UFC welterweight Ben Askren.

The two have had their history of beefing each other on social media. Danis would later challenge Askren to a grappling match. Although “Funky” was not as receptive to it, he would later have a change of heart. However, he also stated that it would be after his mixed martial arts career.

But Danis claims Askren called for a grappling match much before:

“That’s real. Even before he came on your show, Flo Grappling came to my gym,” Danis said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “They said that Ben Askren called Flo Grappling personally on the phone and said ‘I want to grapple Dillon Danis, let’s set it up.’ I said okay, let’s do it. I don’t care, I’m down.

“They were working on setting up some press conferences and building up a big event around it. I think that’d be awesome but the only thing that sucks is he’s going to get submitted by Demian Maia [at UFC Singapore this weekend] but let’s see what happens.”

Danis Could Have Grappled Tony Ferguson

The topic then turned to Joe Lauzon’s winning return at UFC Boston. Danis revealed that he actually grappled and defeated Lauzon back in the day while revealing something else — that he was initially supposed to grapple Tony Ferguson instead of Lauzon.

“Did I ever tell you about that, when I versed him [Lauzon] in that grappling match,” Danis added. “I was supposed to fight Tony Ferguson and then they came with Joe Lauzon. And back then, Tony Ferguson didn’t really have a name and I was like ‘yeah, I’ll go with Joe Lauzon.’

“Joe Lauzon’s a legend, even back then. I was like ‘Tony Ferguson? That guy fights on the prelims. He’s a purple belt.’ It’s funny how things come around. …Many years down the line, I’m still making all the calls.”
