In “the people’s main event” of UFC 238, Donald Cerrone was taking on Tony Ferguson in what promised to bring fireworks. There, the thought process was that the winner would then fight for the lightweight title against the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier. However, the undefeated Russian was not impressed by either one […]

While Dustin Poirier thought Tony Ferguson and Donald Cerrone had a fun fight at UFC 238, he wasn’t completely impressed by either of them.

Ferguson and Cerrone were given Fight of the Night honors for their lightweight affair this past weekend, which saw the former come out on top. The contest came to an end when the doctors rendered Cerrone unable to continue after his right eye was shut just before the start of the third round.

With the winner of the bout essentially being the next challenger for the belt, Poirier kept an eye on the matchup and felt Ferguson was deserving of the victory. However, he felt both competitors looked a bit slow.

“Yeah, I watched it,” Poirier told ESPN. “It was a fun fight to watch. I thought Tony started pulling away, Donald started wearing a lot of damage, getting busted up. I thought Tony was starting to take over the fight. It would have been interesting to see if he would have kept pulling away in the third round.

“But I thought they looked kind of slow. I don’t know, I’m focused on Khabib right now, but I think beat everybody in my division.”

Poirier, of course, is the interim lightweight champion and will face Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title unification fight in the main event of UFC 242 on September 7. Many agree that Ferguson should challenge the winner afterward. However, some, like Cerrone, want a rematch to happen.

Could that stall the division right after it becomes active once again? Here’s what Poirier had to say:

I’m not sure what Donald is ranked but if say, they did the rematch and Donald won the fight, obviously Tony’s the next contender — it would shake up things,” Poirier added. “We’ll see what happens. I don’t know if they are going to do a rematch. Sometimes things are said and they don’t happen. We’ll see in the next couple of weeks.

Justin Gaethje wants to go to Tony Ferguson’s “dark place” inside of the Octagon.

The former World Series Of Fighting (WSOF) lightweight champion has been on a tear through the UFC’s 155-pound division as of late. He’s ready to share the Octagon with a premiere challenger in the weight class. Perhaps even a match-up with former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson.

Welterweight competitor Ben Askren suggested as much on Twitter. This garnered a response from “The Highlight,” who said he’d love to go to Ferguson’s “dark place”:

“That sounds fucking fantastic. Take me to that dark place of yours @TonyFergusonXT

The 30-year-old Gaethje is currently on a two-fight win streak, in which he has knocked both of his opponents out cold. He finished James Vick with a hellacious knockout at UFC Lincoln in August. Gaethje followed that up with another huge knockout win over Edson Barboza this past March.

As for Ferguson, he is currently on a ridiculous 12-fight win streak inside the Octagon. He hasn’t been defeated since May of 2012 when Michael Johnson handed “El Cucuy” a unanimous decision defeat. In his latest outing this past weekend (Sat. June 8, 2019), Ferguson defeated Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone via second-round TKO. With the win, Ferguson is expected to receive a title opportunity next.

Given the complexity of the 155-pound division, however, don’t be surprised if Ferguson’s next fight isn’t for the gold.

Contrary to what was said, Donald Cerrone did not break his orbital bone during his loss against Tony Ferguson.

Cerrone and Ferguson fought for two rounds at UFC 238 this past weekend in Chicago until the former was rendered unable to compete after his right eye had completely shut. “Cowboy” had blown what was suspected to be a broken nose right before the third round which caused his eye to shut. With the doctors not allowing him to compete, Ferguson was given the victory via TKO.

Cerrone was still in good spirits even as he was hospitalized, however, UFC president Dana White claimed after the event that the veteran had broken his orbital bone. That doesn’t seem to be the case after a Cerrone Instagram update on Tuesday, though:

“I’m in Good Health,” Cerrone wrote. “Thanks for all the message and concerns. Only air was in my eye. No broken bones nor cracked or broken orbital. Sitting and waiting for the Rematch or next fight.”

Cerrone notably ended his post by adding that he was waiting for a rematch with Ferguson or another fight. While some fans may argue that a rematch would be warranted, Ferguson was clearly dominating Cerrone in the second round and would have likely continued to do so in the final round. And with 12 wins in a row, it would be extremely harsh for “El Cucuy” to fight anyone but the lightweight champion next.

As for Cerrone, he’s still ranked high at 155 pounds and could be just one or two wins away from finally getting his chance at becoming a UFC champion.
