The UFC will return to New Orleans on Sept. 17 for the first time since 2000, and Season 12 winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” Jonathan Brookins will return to the cage for the first time since winning his title.

The UFC announced Saturday that verbal agreements are in place for TUF 12 champ Brookins, who won the show at lightweight, to drop down to featherweight to face Erik Koch at UFC Fight Night 25.

The “Battle on the Bayou” show now has three confirmed bouts with Alan Belcher vs. Jason MacDonald and Dongi Yang vs. Court McGee getting announced for the card last month.

Brookins (12-3, 1-0 UFC) has not fought since his unanimous decision victory over Michael Johnson at the TUF 12 Finale in December. The WEC and Bellator veteran was scheduled to face John Makdessi at UFC 129 in April, but had to pull out with an injury. Re-booked for the TUF 13 Finale last Saturday against Jeremy Stephens, he was again forced off the card. Brookins’ last loss came at WEC 36 in November 2008 to Jose Aldo a year before Aldo won the featherweight title.

Koch (12-1, 1-0 UFC), who went 3-1 in the WEC prior to its merger with the UFC, has won three straight by first-round stoppage – including consecutive Knockout of the Night bonuses. In March, he knocked out Raphael Assuncao in the first round at UFC 128. His only loss was a unanimous decision setback to Chad Mendes, one of the featherweight division’s top contenders for Aldo’s title, at WEC 47 in March 2010.

The main card of UFC Fight Night 25, an event heavily promoted by UFC sponsor Bud Light, airs on Spike TV. As MMAjunkie.com recently reported, the event is expected to take place at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

UFC Fight Night 25 is expected to take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. The main card will air on Spike TV and is the promotion’s first of a series of planned annual special events with major sponsor Bud Light.

The UFC has not hosted an event in Louisiana since UFC 37 in May 2002, which was in Bossier City, a suburb of Shreveport. The last UFC event in New Orleans was UFC 27 in September 2000, prior to the Zuffa era.

MMAWeekly is reporting that Leonard Garcia and Nam Phan will meet again at UFC Fight Night 24 on March 26th in Seattle. Many fans and analysts feel the judges made a bad decision which awarded the “Bad Boy” a win over Phan at The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale in early December. With Dana White giving Nam Phan his win bonus, there were rumblings of a necessary rematch.

Another controversial fight, in which White awarded both fighters their win bonus was Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard for the Lightweight Championship at UFC 125. The fight marked the second time the two met in the Octagon and now a third meeting is expected to take place at UFC 130 in Las Vegas. The rubber-match is tentatively scheduled and will depend upon if Frankie Edgar, who was given six months for medical clearance, can be cleared before then. Both Edgar and Maynard were medically suspended until at least February 16th; whereby it was noted, Maynard would be cleared and Edgar could be medically cleared as early as that date.

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve just received word that Cody "The French Revolution" McKenzie has agreed to take on Yves Edwards at UFC Fight for the Troops 2 on January 22nd, after Edwards’s original opponent was drafted for the main event. (It should be noted that Edwards has never lost by guillotine choke in 56 career fights.) McKenzie’s big return made us wonder — what does the future hold for the other winners of last Saturday’s UFC event? Well gather around, kids, and we’ll tell you what should happen…

Jonathan Brookins: You know how this works. In his first post-TUF outing, Brookins needs to be built up against a relatively established vet who happens to be vulnerable against his skill-set. So, who’s a chokable, lateral-droppable lightweight who you’ve heard of, but who doesn’t have the kind of striking skills that will make Brookins look foolish? Huh. That actually doesn’t leave a lot of options among the UFC’s current roster.

This is going to sound random as hell, but I think the UFC needs to bring back Matt Veach. Though the H.I.T. Squad fighter was released by the UFC earlier this year after consecutive losses to Frankie Edgar and Paul Kelly (both by submission), he’s gone on to win three straight in smaller promotions; he was also undefeated before he came to the UFC, scoring stoppages in nine out of ten fights. I think we all want to see Brookins developed slowly in winnable matchups; still, Veach is far from a pushover.

Shortly after winning a controversial split decision victory over Nam Phan at the TUF 12 Finale, Leonard Garcia sat down with Phan to watch the fight at the 24/7 Café inside the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. It was an amicable, if unlikely little viewing party, but afterward Garcia said he arrived at a firm conclusion about the scoring in the fight.

He’s watched the bout approximately 15 times since then, he told MMA Fighting, and his thoughts on it are the same each time.

“I think I outscored him in the first and third rounds,” said Garcia. “I think that in the third round, I was dead tired, but I kept firing and kept pressing the action, and I was able to get a takedown as well.”

Though judges Adelaide Byrd and Tony Weeks agreed, giving Garcia the first and third rounds even as judge Junichiro Kamijo gave every round to Phan, the fans in attendance at the Pearl at the Palms voiced their displeasure loudly and thoroughly. Even UFC color commentator Joe Rogan went to great lengths to express his disapproval, which bothered Garcia more than he initially let on.
