Darren Till’s Nutritionist Speculates On His Weight Class

What weight class will Darren Till be fighting at in the future?

Recent title challenger Darren Till may be unsure what division he will be fighting in moving forward, but his nutritionist, Eoghan Gallagher, believes “The Gorilla” can fight at 170 pounds for a long time to come.

Till hit the scales the Friday morning (Sept 7, 2018) before his title fight against Tyron Woodley at a lean 169 pounds. The gentleman responsible for Till’s most recent weight cut is his nutritionist Gallagher.

Although Till has the final say in where he will compete in the future, Gallagher believes the Liverpudlian can fight at welterweight as long as he wants to.

“[The weight cut] did go extremely well in the end,” Gallagher told Peter Carroll on the latest episode of Eurobash. “I was very confident [he would make weight] and I think he can make 170 with ease for years to come, it’s just all about what his preference is moving forward.”

Despite Till’s past issues making weight in the UFC Gallagher believes that with the proper plan in place Till should have no issues what so ever hitting the 170-pound mark.

“We are absolutely confident that when you put in a system that looks to achieve goals over a certain period of time and don’t leave everything to the last minute, like a lot of people do, [Till can make the weight],” he said. “I only got to work with Darren [for a short period of time]. I met him and 20 days later he was 169 pounds, which was significantly less than what I got him at.”

Gallagher is confident that the more time he can spend with Till the easier future weight cuts will be for the Brit. Gallagher will be spending time with Till in Liverpool prior to his next fight.

“Ideally, what I’d like to do moving forward is spend six to eight weeks with him in Liverpool in a much longer camp than this one, obviously this was a short-notice fight. I’d look to get the weight down earlier, get him a bit slimmer — a little bit less aggressive than I had to do it this time. I’d get the weight down slowly, making the cut in the end extremely easy.”

“This cut was super easy. The actual water cut itself did not take a significant amount of time. When he jumped on the scales and we saw 170, his teammate Mike Grundy and I were there, we were all together and it was a really emotional moment for us. We just hugged it out and we were like, ‘Wow’. Absolutely, Darren can make 170 with ease with the systems that we have in place,” he said.

Ratings are in for the UFC 228 prelims and it’s not looking good.

In fact, it couldn’t be much worse for last Saturday’s (Sat., September 8, 2018) pay-per-view card from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, at least for the preliminary card. The FX and Fight Pass-aired prelims reportedly brought in the lowest figures all year.

According to MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer, the prelims averaged 560,000 viewers, peaking with 683,000 viewers during the featured Tatiana Suarez vs. Carla Esparza fight, to earn the lowest numbers of the year.

Several factors contributed to the low numbers, with the fights being moved to FX instead of the customary FOX Sports 1 to make room for college football certainly playing a big role. The overall competition factor with college football overall also definitely failed to help things as well.

The numbers were the lowest for the prelims of a UFC pay-per-view card since September 2017’s UFC 215. That card saw the prelims delayed for an hour by the Walker Cup golf tournament. The event was a low-anticipated pay-per-view as well, with a scant 100,000 buys for the Amanda Nunes vs. Valentina Shevchenko-headlined card rating as one of the worst in modern history. Throughout 2018, UFC prelims have averaged 789,000 viewers on FOX Sports 1 and only 617,000 viewers on FX.

The prelims faced competition from three major football games airing concurrently, but overall, the main detractor to the UFC 228 prelims was simply the lack of interest in the card and more specifically, the lack of interest in its main event, which is always the main motivating factor in how a card rates on both TV and pay-per-view. This event saw welterweight champion Tyron Woodley defend his title against highly-promoted rising Brit Darren Till in the main event.

But while Till has been hyped through the roof since beating Donald Cerrone last year, a few indicators show that Till did not actually bring much attention to the card in an overarching sense.

There were around 500,000 Google searches for the event, with 200,000 of those being for Woodley itself. Meltzer clarified that while this was a low number, it wasn’t necessarily a disaster and on par with Google search expectations for the event.

The pre-fight show airing on FX brought 271,000 viewers while the post-fight show on FOX Sports 1 did a putrid 64,000 viewers, again showing a pure lack of interest in the product the UFC offered last weekend.

The UFC has seen far too much of this during this year, and while that’s bound to turn around with next month’s Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov megafight, McGregor can’t fight every weekend. Clearly, the UFC is losing the interest of fans.

If they can turn that around is anyone’s guess.

Six Reasons Why Dana White Dislikes Tyron Woodley

Six reasons why Dana White dislikes Tyron Woodley.

Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley successfully defended his title against Darren Till at UFC 228. The “Chosen One” submitted the hyped younger fighter in the second round, in so doing becoming the current longest-reigning UFC champion.

Woodley first captured the welterweight strap at UFC 201 when he bum-rushed then-champion Robbie Lawler with his patented and thunderous right hand. Since winning the title, the “Chosen One” has defended it four times.

However, not all is good with the UFC’s longest-reigning current champ. Woodley has drawn much criticism from UFC President Dana White. As a result, MMA fans have developed a mostly derogatory relationship with Woodley due to White’s attitude. For the most part, MMA fans go as Dana goes.

That being said, the UFC has a champion in Woodley who is active and doesn’t run from fights. So why does it seem that White flat-out dislikes Woodley? Only White knows the truth behind the beef, but we here at LowkickMMA are pragmatic, so we have compiled a list:

Check out our six reasons why Dana White dislikes Woodley.

He Knows His Worth

Perhaps the reason why UFC President Dana White doesn’t seem to like Woodley is that the “Chosen One” knows his worth.

It’s no secret Dana gets along better with the fighters he can rein in and bully to a certain degree. Although very much a company man, Woodley isn’t that guy that White can manipulate. Quite the opposite is true, as a matter of fact.

Woodley is an active champion, defending his title whenever he is healthy and against all comers. That being said, Woodley has passion projects he has been working on these last couple years, and he won’t let anything get in the way of.

Woodley is 36 years old, however, so his fighting career is most likely winding down. Perhaps he will find success as a rapper or more likely as an actor. Either way, Woodley knows his worth, whatever it is.

Kamaru Usman Wants To Beat Colby Covington’s A** For Social Media’s Sake

Kamaru Usman wants to beat Colby Covington’s ***.

Kamaru Usman would take pleasure in beating Colby Covington’s *** – would love to ‘put his hand through’ Covington’s face.

The 31-year-old Usman is currently ranked as the #6 welterweight in the UFC. The “Nigerian Nightmare” has positioned himself among the divisions elite. A showdown with champion Tyron Woodley seems destine. Or perhaps Usman must deal with recently defeated title challenger Darren Till. Let’s not forget the grudge match with Covington still looms.

Usman actually has a great deal of respect for both Woodley and Till. However, when it comes to Covington the “Nigerian Nightmare” would take extra pleasure in putting his fist through Covington’s face.

“That’s more than business,” Kamaru Usman told the media ahead of last Saturday’s UFC 228 card (courtesy of BJPenn.com). “That’s good business — after I personally beat his ***. That one’s a little added bonus. There’s not one guy in the UFC that I can say that I have negative feelings towards, except Colby Covington. I truly want to put my hands through his face. That’s a guy that… the world would be watching as well. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t get a message, whether it’s Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter saying ‘man I can’t wait for you to kill Colby Covington.’”

Usman boasts an impressive 13-1 record. He is a perfect 10-0 inside the octagon and he hasn’t lost a fight since 2013. He most recently defeated former welterweight and middleweight title challenger Demian Maia back in May of this year.

Ben Askren Calls Colby Covington “Poor Man’s Version Of Me”

Ben Askren has come to the defense of his teammate, Tyron Woodley, against expected opponent Colby Covington.

With Tyron Woodley’s title defense against Darren Till in the rear-view, “T-Wood” can move on to a bigger and more personal feud.

Woodley is believed to be fighting Colby Covington for the welterweight title next. The pair are former teammates who have built up a ton of animosity towards one another in the past several months.

Recently, Woodley’s training partner from Roufusport Training Center, Ben Askren, took to Twitter to offer some comments on Covington.

The recently retired mixed martial artist said the following about Covington, who he described as “a poor man’s version of me”:

“Cmon is a poor mans version of me. Couldn’t accomplish in wrestling, got choked out by subpar Wallrey Alves and trash talking sounds like his IQ is 85(which it may be although I can’t confirm)!”

Shortly after his victory, Covington called out Woodley to fight at the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view (PPV). The Madison Square Garden card is currently without a main event. Woodley said that he believes he could make that date and called Covington an embarrassment to the sport.

Covington has yet to respond to Askren’s remarks on Twitter.
