UFC Heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou doesn’t believe the crossover between him and boxing superstar Tyson Fury will take place anytime soon.

Ngannou believes that the fight will take place sometime in the future, but not in 2022. Fury had proposed that the two fight under boxing rules, but with MMA style gloves. It seems as if the boxer vs MMA fighter will not stop anytime soon. This would by far be the biggest fight between the two styles since the Conor McGregor – Floyd Mayweather fight back in 2017. That fight opened the floodgates to have boxers and MMA fighters meet up in the squared circle (or even most recently in a triangle) and go at it.

Ngannou believes that he may be able to bring a lot to the table that Fury’s opponents have not with his power and speed.

“Me and Tyson Fury may fight in 2023. It will be challenging, but I will throw some bombs at him that he will not have experienced before,” Ngannou told Stake. “I don’t know exactly when Tyson and I will fight. But I think maybe sometime in 2023. I am still under contract with UFC, so I don’t know right now the state of my situation or how it will play out. But I will say it will probably happen at some point. I definitely want to do it, but we don’t have control over it right now. I know it will be very tough when we fight. Not only am I coming from a distant sport, but I am testing myself against one of the best, if not the best, boxer ever.” (Transcribed by Mirror)

Francis Ngannou will defend his title for the first time at UFC 270 against former training partner, Ciryl Gane

Ngannou will be making his first title defense since he knocked out Stipe Miocic back in March of 2021. Since that time, Gane had beaten Derrick Lewis for the interim championship. Gane sports a perfect 10-0 record inside the octagon, and is one of the more complete fighters in the heavyweight division. He will be Ngannou’s biggest threat as he is the most technical striker he has ever fought.

Although Ngannou is looking forward to a fight with Fury, he should not take this next fight against Gane too lightly. We have seen many fighters overlook their opponents when looking forward to the future “bigger fights”.

Dana White, Francis Ngannou, Tyson Fury

UFC president Dana White wasn’t shocked when he learned that heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury was interested in a potential crossover matchup with Francis Ngannou.

Ngannou is set to make his first UFC heavyweight title defense against Ciryl Gane at UFC 270, nearly a year after he first earned the title over Stipe Miocic. This could be the last fight of Ngannou’s UFC tenure if he and the UFC brass aren’t able to come to terms on a new contract.

Leading up to the fight, Ngannou has been the target of Fury for a potential boxing match down the line. Ngannou is mostly known for his striking and has spoken about his early aspirations to become a professional boxer.

White and boxing have a complicated relationship, as the UFC headman has gone back-and-forth with boxing stars, personalities, and promoters over the years. But during his UFC Vegas 46 post-fight press conference, he revealed that Fury’s callout didn’t catch him off guard.

“These boxing guys need guys to fight,” White said. “None of this surprises me. That’s what it shows, you know what I mean? Doesn’t surprise me at all.”

Francis Ngannou Seems Equally Interested In A Tyson Fury Fight

Ngannou has criticized the UFC for how it treats its roster, and more specifically how athletes are compensated. He has pointed to boxers such as Jake Paul and Deontay Wilder making millions to box, while some UFC fighters are struggling to make ends meet.

Ngannou seems receptive and optimistic about a potential move to boxing, and more specifically a matchup against Fury. It’s unclear if it’ll ultimately happen, but chances could boost if Ngannou parts ways with the UFC.

Fury is coming off his trilogy win over Wilder last year and is currently in negotiations to battle Dillian Whyte after a mandatory order by the WBC.

Francis Ngannou has reiterated his desire to box Tyson Fury and claimed that the fight will eventually happen with or without the help of the UFC.

Ngannou, who is due to fight Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 on January 22, has been at odds with MMA’s premier promotion for some time now and could well become a free agent in 2022.

The Cameroonian knockout artist has been talking up a potential crossover bout with WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, who seems keen on a fight with the UFC heavyweight king.

Ngannou has previously stated that he will only sign a new deal with the UFC if he is free to take boxing bouts with the likes of ‘The Gypsy King’ and Deontay Wilder.

The UFC are notoriously strict on this type of thing but have made exceptions in the past. Conor McGregor, with the help of the UFC, fought Floyd Mayweather in what was one of the most lucrative combat sports events of all time.

Francis Ngannou Wants The Conor McGregor Treatment

During a recent interview with DAZN, Ngannou guaranteed that he will fight Fury sooner or later,

“Yeah, I do believe that that fight will happen,” Ngannou said. “I think Tyson Fury wants that fight to happen too, so eventually it will happen at some point. I can’t say specifically when but for sure it’s gonna happen since we both are willing to make that fight happen.”

Ngannou clarified that he doesn’t want to be allowed to go off and make boxing bouts alone. The 35-year-old wants Dana White and the UFC to co-promote shows between him and some of the best heavyweights on the planet.

“It’s not like freely go have a boxing match but more so I would like something like Conor and Mayweather did,” Ngannou explain about his contractual requirements. “I think it would be more viral with the supporting that, with the UFC behind that. Anything that you do with the UFC behind, I think it’s gonna be huge…

“From where we are, nothing is safe to say…. Yes (no boxing is a deal-breaker). I’m 35 years old, bro. It’s not like I have a lifetime ahead of me. I’m very aware of my age and the stage of my career and if I really want to do this, I think it’s time to do it. But I don’t see why that shouldn’t be possible for them as well.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Francis Ngannou’s dreams of becoming a boxer might be over before they began.

Francis Ngannou is just one of the UFC fighters who are looking to make some extra money by trying their hand at boxing. The road paved by Jake Paul has given former UFC fighters a chance to make a huge paycheck in a “celebrity” style boxing match. Ngannou has been toying with this idea himself and has been asking for a shot at Tyson Fury.

One man who is not so sure of Ngannou’s chances against “The Gypsy King” is his former coach Fernand Lopez.

“I think the fight makes sense for Francis because he thinks he can cash out. There’s also something there for Tyson Fury, he doesn’t care that it’s not a competitive fight, he just wants to make money and make some news,” Lopez told The Mac Life. “It would take at least three years for Francis Ngannou to be competitive from a boxing standpoint with Tyson Fury, and I mean three years only dedicated to boxing. Realistically, he would have to stop everything else and probably do nothing else for three years, only boxing. No grappling, nothing else. The way that his body and muscles are built, it will not allow him to keep throwing punches after the third round.”

Ngannou is known for his power in the UFC heavyweight division. Who can forget when he sent Alistair Overeem into the shadow realm at UFC 218, but can his power translate over to the squared circle? Lopez thinks not.

“I’m not sure Francis can ever challenge the stamina or endurance of Tyson Fury,” Lopez said. “All he can do is have a high defense; be elusive, close footwork, change direction. But eventually, Tyson will wear him down, get him tired, work the body and then go up with the uppercut, and sooner or later Francis will give up because of the volume, because of the pressure shots and he will just go down.

“I don’t see how he can win the match. This is an opportunity for him to cash out. I’m not sure if you’re a UFC fighter it’s worth letting it all go and have three years boxing training–how would you live your life, what would be your income? And after three years, you may be competitive enough to stand there and keep throwing punches.”

Lopez was Ngannou’s first MMA coach in France. He led him to the UFC and saw him rise up the ranks. However, the two have since had a falling out and Lopez is now the head coach of Ngannou’s upcoming opponent Ciryl Gane. Having trained Ngannou for years, Lopez thinks he knows what to expect in the main event of UFC 270. He and Gane are preparing for Ngannou and all of his strengths and weaknesses.

“We are not expecting anything brilliant, Francis is not a boxer,” Lopez said. “You train a lot to be a boxer. Boxing needs dedication, boxing needs sacrifice, you need years and years to train. So we know the outcome of that fight. The question is how much Francis Ngannou can cash out, because he only has one shot. Because objectively speaking, he cannot think about having a boxing career because his boxing skill will not be enough for him to become a boxer.”

O’Malley Would Expect Fury To ‘Piece Ngannou Up’ In Boxing Match

UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou has flirted with the idea of boxing against Tyson Fury, but Sean O’Malley doesn’t like his odds.

UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou has flirted with the idea of boxing against Tyson Fury, but Sean O’Malley doesn’t like his odds.

Ngannou is set to face Ciryl Gane for the unified UFC heavyweight title at UFC 270. It’s been quite the buildup to the fight, featuring his strained relationship with his former coach Fernand Lopez.

After winning his trilogy with Deontay Wilder, Fury is widely expected to face Dillian Whyte next after a mandatory negotiation order. It’s unclear if and when the fight will happen as an official date hasn’t been targeted.

During a recent episode of his podcast, O’Malley explained why he feels Ngannou wouldn’t match up well against Fury.

“Ngannou vs. Fury potential boxing fight. If I’m being real, I’ve seen Ngannou throw [punches] like he doesn’t have a lot of boxing skills,” O’Malley said. “If you see how he throws some of his punches, it’s not like a good one too. It’s not even close [to Fury’s level]. With that being said, he could still catch him. He’s got that much f***ing power. Ngannou’s probably got more power than Wilder I’d say… So if they’re in a boxing ring, Francis is so big and terrifying but Tyson Fury would probably piece him up.”

After the negotiations with Whyte stalled, Fury and Ngannou have gone at it on social media for a potential crossover fight. Ngannou, who has long hinted at a move to boxing, has publicly entertained the idea of fighting Fury.

Ngannou has been at odds with the UFC brass for months over an ongoing contract dispute. While UFC President Dana White has expressed recent optimism regarding a new contract for Ngannou, it’s unclear if a deal will get done with one fight left.

O’Malley is arguably one of the best strikers in MMA today and seems to know what he’s talking about when it comes to the boxing aspect of fighting. Ngannou vs. Fury may or may not happen, but O’Malley certainly thinks that Ngannou should stay away from the potential matchup.
