In case you were wondering, no, Nate Marquardt has not completely put his loss to Chael Sonnen at UFC 109 behind him. It’s still there in the back of his mind. Certain aspects of it still bug him. But that’s okay, he says. Hanging on to a loss isn’t always a bad thing.

“You always have to look forward, but that doesn’t always mean putting it completely behind you,” Marquardt (29-9-2) told MMA Fighting. “It means looking at it and seeing why it happened and fixing your mistakes. I made technical mistakes and I made tactical mistakes, and that’s what cost me the fight.”

It cost him not only the victory, but also a title shot against his old nemesis, UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva. Marquardt came into the cage that night as a heavy favorite to beat Sonnen and claim the number one contender spot. Fifteen minutes later, Sonnen was bloodied and battered, but Marquardt was declared the loser via unanimous decision.

There went the title shot. There went the chance at redemption.

People kept telling him he’d won Fight of the Night, but Jared Hamman didn’t realize they were serious. It was nice to hear, and he appreciated the compliment. He knew his three-round slobberknocker with Rodney Wallace at UFC 111 had been an entertaining one, but Fight of the Night? On the same card that featured guys like Georges St. Pierre and Shane Carwin? That didn’t sound right.

“I thought they were telling me like, basically, that was a really good fight,” Hamman (12-2) told MMA Fighting. “I was like, thanks, I appreciate that. They had to be like, ‘No, you really won the Fight of the Night bonus.’ I had to call my manager and ask him if it was true.”

And it was. After a fifteen-minute scrap with Wallace that sometimes resembled a blur of furious arms and legs roving around the Octagon like a contained tornado, Hamman won a unanimous decision victory and, as he would learn later in the night, a $65,000 bonus for Fight of the Night.

Dana White says he’ll fire UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva if he decides he’d rather dance than fight at UFC 117. His opponent, Chael Sonnen, says he’s going to come right at Silva and force him to do something – anything – other than play his own private game for five rounds.

You add those two motivating forces together, throw in a dash of vocal displeasure from fans and media over his last title defense against Demian Maia, and you’d think that what we have here is a recipe for a real fight.

At least, it would be if we were dealing with a normal fighter, but we aren’t. We’re dealing with Anderson Silva. If there’s one thing we’ve learned about him over the last few years, it’s that he’s going to do whatever he feels like once that cage door shuts, and he doesn’t particularly seem to care what anyone else thinks about it.

LAS VEGAS — Brendan Schaub‘s name did not appear anywhere on the UFC’s official schedule, but that didn’t stop the Colorado native from making an appearance at the open workouts at the MGM Grand Conference Center Marquee Ballroom.

While Schaub was there mainly in support of teammate and main event participant Shane Carwin, in a way, it also symbolized his hope to be considered among the sport’s top-level heavyweights following his UFC 116 match against Chris Tuchscherer.

“I expect to be on the main card after this,” Schaub (5-1) told MMA Fighting. “It’s an honor to be on the Spike prelims, but after this, I expect big-name opponents. I think this will separate me from the rest of the up-and-comers. I think I showed what I do to up-and-comers like Chase Gormley and the guys on the [Ultimate Fighter] show, so I think from here it’s going to be some pretty big-name UFC vets for me.”
