Daniel Cormier: It’s Hard To Put Faith In Someone Like Jon Jones

UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier found himself in a tough spot this week. Just three days out from his UFC 200 main event rematch with Jon Jones and the worst news broke; ‘Bones’ had failed a USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) random test and was struck off the July 9 card. With little over 72 hours to find a replacement, Cormier was greatly dispirited by this last-minute blow, and the hunt to replace the interim champion was underway.

Just 24 hours after the news of Jon Jones being cast from the milestone UFC 200 card and things were looking a little brighter. Amidst the ruckus of the massively entertaining UFC Fight Night 90 card, the first of the three-day UFC extravaganza, rumours began spreading that Anderson Silva was to face Daniel Cormier in the absence of ‘Bones.’ Dana White would go on to confirm the news during an impromptu presser, and suddenly the UFC 200 mess had been somewhat erased.

Still fresh in his mind, potentially causing additional stress given his change of opponent and the initial shock, Daniel Cormier talks about Jon Jones’ failed drug test during an appearance on ‘The Herd.’

As quoted by MMAFighting.com, ‘DC’ feels the rivalry with Jones has become cursed:

“We have to see how this plays out but I think in time [we will fight again]. Four times Jon and I have been scheduled to fight and we’ve fought once. The very first fight he pulled out of, then he beat me, then I pulled out of the fight in April, and now this. It’s a snake bitten fight man. It seems as though every time we’re getting close to it happening, something horrible goes wrong. So I think in time, but he has to see what happens with this. Mistake or no mistake, USADA does not play around. There will be a suspension and he will have to abide by that.”

CormierApologizesForUFC197

Much like many other onlookers in this saga with Jones, the light-heavyweight champion feels frustrated as he watches ‘Bones’ squander his wealth of talent:

“It’s still disappointing. Obviously the young man’s hurting. We don’t know exactly what he’s going through but honestly that was a mistake made in there. Whether it be purposely, whether it be something they didn’t know about, there was a mistake.”

“There’s been a number of occasions where, for lack of a better word, [Jon] kind of let the promotion down. When that happens it’s very hard to put your faith in someone like that. You see the UFC’s machine go full go behind Ronda Rousey, behind Conor McGregor and those guys, they hold up their end of the bargain. It’s your job to show up and fight and it’s your job to always try to do the right thing.

It’s unfortunate because he’s one of the most talented people that I’ve ever seen, and it’s unfortunate because he can’t get out of his own way.”

There’s still a myriad of unanswered questions that remain on Jones’ failed drug screen, but rest assured answers are probably en route.

It’s been one of the craziest weeks in mixed martial arts history, and we are still right in the thick of it. We are just 24 hours out from the biggest UFC events of all time, so you know it’s weigh-ins day here at LowKickMMA. After Jon Jones failed the USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) drug test and was removed from the top spot on the card, Mark Hunt’s heavyweight collision with Brock Lesnar was promoted to main event.

The former heavyweight champion’s comeback could well prove short lived if he chews on one of those legendary punches from Hunt. ‘The Super Samoan’ is known for knocking out opponents with usually granite chins (see Roy Nelson taking an atom bomb from Derrick Lewis), so many believe Lesnar is truly up against the odds in this one.

Miesha Tate will attempt her first women’s bantamweight title defense against rampant contender Amanda Nunes in the new co-main event of the evening. After stunning Holly Holm for the belt at UFC 195, ‘Cupcake’ will have her hands full in the second fiddle bout at UFC 200. Nunes will hope to continue the trend of 135-pound titles changing hands, but undoubtedly faces the best version of Tate to date.

Did someone say Anderson Silva?

The crazy rumours were true, Anderson Silva steps in on short notice for a non title fight with Daniel Cormier. This should be a great example of wrestler vs. striker in Jones’ absence, but the madness does not stop there. The interim featherweight strap is on the line as Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar do battle again, in a bout that many believe will determine the actual champion of the division.

With Conor McGregor tied up in a whole different division, expectations are that the winner of this fight will eventually get promoted to true boss of the feathers. Opening up the UFC 200 card will be former heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez as he attempts to climb the ladder against Travis ‘Hapa’ Browne.

The highs and lows of this extremely eventful triple-event UFC fight week continue to unfold at an unprecedented rate. First off we entered the MMA twilight zone when Jon Jones was removed from this weekend’s July 9 UFC 200 super card. A failed drug test by USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) that dated back to mid-June was revealed in a shocking turn of events this past Wednesday, leading to a veritable of wild headlines.

Anderson Silva was later announced as the Absent Jones’ replacement, as the interim champion tried to address his failed drug test to the media on the same day. The heavyweight attraction between Mark Hunt and Brock Lesnar was promoted to the main event, and all of a sudden UFC 200 was looking tidy again. Amidst the highly entertaining UFC Fight Night 90 card last night there was yet more of a shuffle announced.

Miesha Tate 2

UFC women’s bantamweight champion and fierce contender Amanda Nunes were now bumped up to the main event, as Lesnar and ‘The Super Samoan’ were demoted to the second fiddle spot. As reported by Brett Okamoto on Twitter and Dana White himself (as quoted by Damon Martin of FOX Sports).

“Miesha is the woman who beat the woman who beat the woman. She’s the champ,” White said. “What she accomplished a few fights ago, you can’t disrespect that. She should be the main event. She deserves that.”

MieshaYell

Since defeating Holly Holm at UFC 195, Tate has been talking a lot about fighting Ronda Rousey. Now, in the absence of the biggest draw in women’s MMA history, ‘Cupcake’ finds herself headlining the biggest event in UFC history. It’s strange how things turn out.

The updated UFC 200 main card (for the fourth time in two days) is as follows:

Main event

Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes

Co-main event

Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt

Main card

Daniel Cormier vs. Anderson Silva

Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo (interim featherweight title fight)

Cain Velasquez vs. Travis Browne

To say this has been the wildest week in UFC history would be a gross understatement. There really are few words to describe the madness of the past few days, as UFC fight week is in full swing heading in to the TUF 23 finals and of course UFC 200, but it hasn’t been all good. When news broke that Jon Jones had failed a USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) test on June 16, the main event for this weekend’s historic milestone card fell to pieces. The short notice nature of the announcement, just three days out from the fight itself, made the pill that much harder to swallow.

In the midst of the UFC lightweight title changing hands at UFC Fight Night 90, with Eddie Alvarez sleeping Rafael dos Anjos, we got some lifting news about the UFC 200 card. Former middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva is to face light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier in a non title bout in the absence of ‘Bones.’ UFC 200 is looking amazing once again, but there’s more bad news for the fans of the interim 205-pound boss.

jon-jones-ap[1]

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, a frequently reliable source of inside information regarding UFC pay-per-view buys and insider insights, has reported via Twitter that Jones has been flagged for multiple banned substances. As you’ll read later in the article, this could unfortunately prove incredibly costly for Jon Jones in terms of his suspension.

Melzer reports that Dana White indicated two banned substances being flagged by USADA:

During an impromptu press conference in the heat of the media frenzy yesterday (Thursday Jul7, 2016) Jon Jones addressed reporters about his USADA violation. During an emotional moment ‘Bones’ apologised to the UFC, the fans and Daniel Cormier for his removal from UFC 200. He also indicated that a tainted supplement was the reason for failing the dope screen. After a little bit of digging through the USADA policies for the UFC, this writer has found a number of potentially concerning facts.

Under the new testing standards, if it’s a second offense, or the athlete is discovered to have intentionally taken these substances under ‘aggravating’ circumstances, an additional two years can be added to the ban. As per the official USADA policy:

10.2.3 The period of Ineligibility may be increased up to an additional two years where Aggravating Circumstances are present.

Aggravating Circumstances: Aggravating Circumstances exist where the Anti-Doping Policy Violation was intentional, the Anti-Doping Policy Violation had significant potential to enhance an Athlete’s Bout performance, and one of the following additional factors is present: the Athlete’s or other Person committed the Anti-Doping Policy Violation as part of a doping plan or scheme, either individually or involving a conspiracy or common enterprise to commit an Anti-Doping Policy Violation; the Athlete or other Person Used or Possessed multiple Prohibited Substances or Prohibited Methods or Used or Possessed a Prohibited Substance or Prohibited Method on multiple occasions; the Athlete or Person engaged in deceptive or obstructing conduct to avoid the detection or adjudication of an Anti-Doping Policy Violation.

This indeed could be considered unlikely in light of recent fighters having reduced ineligibility periods following legitimate findings of tainted supplements. That said, if Jones was intentionally doping, it could well signal the start of a very long suspension. If what Jones says is true though, he may actually see action without suspension at all, as discretionary clauses within the USADA policy allow lenience in these types of cases.

As usual we’ll keep you updated here on LowKickMMA, so stay tuned.

Conor McGregor’s Coach Trolls Dana White

It’s been a rough night for any fans who were pumped about Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones’ UFC 200 rematch. ‘Bones’ was flagged by the United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) for a potential violation of the new policy last night (Wednesday July 6, 2016) and the former undisputed champion was removed from the card.

The promotion is actively seeking a replacement to face ‘DC’ on just three days notice. Another massive pay-per-view event and another serious stroke of misfortune for the MMA world.

The loss of Jones from the main event has seen Mark Hunt vs. Brock Lesnar promoted to the top spot, but the ramifications of this catastrophic saga are by no means limited to the order of this single card. As historic and exciting as the milestone UFC 200 event may be, the fact Jones has been removed will have a huge impact on his own future, that of the division’s and potentially the promotion’s too. Once again Jon Jones is the subject of much controversy.

FotorCreated

Many have called to replace Jones against Cormier at UFC 200, but one rather interesting Tweet came from Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh. The head of SBG (Straight Blast Gym) in Ireland and long time trainer of the UFC featherweight champion sent a rather inflammatory question to UFC president Dana White after the news of Jones’ failed drug test.

Kavanagh is of course referring to the highly publicized rift between McGregor and the UFC. It came to be when ‘The Notorious’ refused to attend a press conference for the event in California, and was subsequently removed from his UFC 200 main event rematch with Nate Diaz.

White had a typically blunt response, and UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping jumped in on the conversation offering to fight Cormier this coming Saturday:

The story continues to evolve, and as usual we’ll be here to keep you posted every step of the way here at LowKickMMA.com!

UFC 200 press conference live stream starts at 3 PM ET here on LowKick.

UFC 200 fight week is upon us, and we MMA fans are beginning to get in to the festive swing of things. It’s been seven years since the first milestone event of UFC 100 went down, and how things have changed since then. What has stayed the same is the presence of Brock Lesnar, albeit on short notice and reportedly for one fight, as the WWE crossover looks to erase the memories of his brutal losses in 2010/11. He faces a stone cold knockout puncher in Mark Hunt and many feel this is going to be a rude welcoming back for the ex-UFC heavyweight champion.

That’s not even the headliner for the evening, as Lesnar vs. Hunt plays second fiddle to the rematch between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones. The light-heavyweight championship became vacant when Jones was temporarily banished by the UFC, and Cormier took the throne in his absence. After losing to ‘Bones’ at UFC 182 following a hateful rivalry, ‘DC’ is seeking redemption in the second defense of the belt.

79e73026e0cda6a2bd6a42ffdf3c253a

Don’t sleep on the interim featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar, as the two former champions of 145 and 155 pounds respectively meet for the second time. After his devastating KO loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 194, ‘Scarface’ is looking to get back on track and take back the junior title, whole Edgar seeks revenge for his narrow loss to Aldo at UFC 156 in 2013.

Another division and another championship fight as Miesha Tate looks to make her first defense of the women’s 135-pound strap against Amanda Nunes. After choking Holly Holm out cold at UFC 195, ‘Cupcake’ is hoping to prove she’s here to stay, while Nunes wants to make it four straight and keep the title changing hands. Former heavyweight boss Cain Velasquez is also back in action, taking on Hawaiian heavy hitter Travis Browne to open the main card on July 9.

Stay tuned to LowKick as we celebrate the biggest fight week EVER!
