Heading into last night’s (July 30, 2016) UFC 201 from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, welterweight veteran Jake “The Juggernaut” Ellenberger was going through quite the rough patch. He had lost five of his last six bouts with three of those losses coming by way of stoppage. It was safe to say that “The Juggernaut” was on his last legs with the promotion last night, and it turns out that he was actually given a second chance.

Speaking on FOX Sports 1 after the event, UFC President Dana White said that the UFC had briefly cut Ellenberger, but that the longtime veteran begged for more chance:

“I didn’t know what to expect from him,” White said. “I said in the standup with [UFC commentator Joe] Rogan before the fights started, if he comes out and does what he’s capable of doing, then this is going to be a very fun fight.”

“With the UFC, we had cut him,” White added. “He flew out to Las Vegas and he met with me and said, ‘Don’t cut me, please.’ He said, ‘Give me one more shot. I promise I will come out and deliver.’”

Ellenberger undoubtedly delivered, as he came out strong in the first and blasted his opponent, No. 9-ranked Matt Brown, with a body kick that dropped “The Immortal”. “The Juggernaut” followed up with a flurry of strikes to end the bout in the very first round. Many had expected Brown to get the job done, but as White stated, Ellenberger showed up:

“We put him against Matt Brown and he came out and delivered,” White said.

Where does “The Juggernaut” go after this victory?

Following Saturday night’s UFC pay-per-view event, UFC President Dana White spoke backstage with Megan Olivi to share his thoughts on what was an eventful evening in Atlanta, Georgia.

Regarding the Lawler-Woodley main event ending so quickly and violently, White offered the following take to Olivi.

“That’s exactly how everyone thought it would go. If Tyron Woodley could catch him in the first round with his fast, explosive punches he would probably catch Robbie and knock him out. But if Robbie took him in the second and third round, Woodley tends to gas and Robbie would dominate. That’s exactly how I saw it going, and that’s the way it went.”

It’s Sunday morning, and the MMA world is collectively left to sit and chew on yet another shocking upset in a UFC title fight.

Today, it comes in the form of Tyron Woodley’s first-round knockout of Robbie Lawler in the main event of last night’s (Sat., July 30, 2016) UFC 201 from Philips Arena in Atlanta, and while we probably shouldn’t be all that surprised due to “T-Wood’s” power and Lawler’s propensity for getting hit, it’s simply the latest in a long line of touted champions who just can’t hold onto their belts for all that long in today’s evolving MMA landscape.

Miesha Tate vs Holly Holm

All in all, seven champions have been dethroned already in 2016 after Dominick Cruz, Miesha Tate, Stipe Miocic, Michael Bisping, Eddie Alvarez, Amanda Nunes, and now Woodley unseated relatively new champions in their own right. Gone are the days of dominant champions like Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre. Jon Jones is still here, technically, but his own actions have put a serious halt to his otherwise dominant career that is now on hold for an undetermined amount of time.

To put it in a stark kind of perspective, since Woodley last fought and beat Kelvin Gastelum by split decision at UFC 182, the only champ from that time to still have the belt is Demetrious Johnson after Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Rafael dos Anjos, Daniel Cormier, Fabricio Werdum, Holly Holm, Luke Rockhold, and Conor McGregor all won their respective titles in 2015. That’s 14 new champs in a year-and-a-half, folks, and that’s the kind of shakeup that can only be seen in mixed martial arts.

Just what that means for a sport where the UFC was recently purchased for a record-setting $4 billion remains to be seen. On the surface, business has never been better, but it’s hard to say if that’s sustainable for any long-term timeframe.

Also on the surface, it would appear that, with Ronda Rousey absent from the sport and obviously not a champion, the UFC has one true and proven top pay-per-view (PPV) draw in McGregor, and he hasn’t even defended the belt he won from Jose Aldo last year.

There is going to be the argument that the frequent changing of titles prevents marketable stars from being built, and of course there will be the side that supports and applauds the inherent unpredictability of fighting and the excitement that comes along with it. Which side are you on?

With losses in five out of his six previous bouts, formerly touted UFC welterweight veteran Jake Ellenberger had his back against the wall when he faced another man in the similar spot in Matt Brown at last night’s (Sat., July 30, 2016) UFC 201 from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

But ‘The Juggernaut’ fought like a man possessed after switching camps to the revered King’s MMA, coming out with a massive overhand right out of the gate that rocked “The Immortal” huge. He recovered, but Ellenberger used his newfound striking to absolutely decimate Brown with a picturesque body kick shortly thereafter.

It was a vitally important win that most likely saved Ellenberger’s job. Check out the video highlights of his career-extending victory right here:

UFC 201 went down last night (Saturday July 30, 2016) in Atlanta, Georgia. The reigning welterweight champion Robbie Lawler looked to defend his strap against explosive contender Tyron Woodley in the main event. ‘Ruthless’ was coming off a duo of gruelling battles against Carlos Condit and Rory MacDonald at UFC 195 and UFC 189 respectively, and many expected a similar story against ‘The Chosen One.’

As things turned out, Woodley came out and got the job done inside one round. Catching Lawler with an overhand right from hell, the hungry contender became champion as ‘Ruthless’ was sent in to another dimension against the octagon fence. It was brutal to watch, but we knew that round one was where Woodley needed to win the fight. Taking a grinder like Lawler in to the later rounds just wasn’t an option.

As the dust settled on Woodley’s impressive win, UFC president Dana White gave his opinion on the quick title fight. As the changing of yet another UFC belt in 2016 took place, White says he wasn’t surprised by the result. As quoted by MMAMania.com’s Adam Guillen Jr.:

“That’s exactly how everyone thought it would go. If Tyron Woodley could catch him in the first round with his fast, explosive punches he would probably catch Robbie and knock him out. But if Robbie took him in the second and third round, Woodley tends to gas and Robbie would dominate. That’s exactly how I saw it going. And that’s the way it went.”

With Woodley’s win came the challenge of a ‘money fight’ with Nick Diaz at UFC 202. The infamous Stockton brawler’s suspension for a failed drug test after UFC 183 came to an end this week, giving another interesting twist on the UFC welterweight picture.
