UFC 202 went down in Las Vegas last Saturday August 20. The main event was the long awaited rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor, and did not disappoint. Following Diaz’s submission win over McGregor at UFC 196, the Irishman was out for revenge. MMA fans were treated to a five-round war at UFC 202, and vengeance was sweet for McGregor. Although its been debated in the time since, ‘The Notorious’ took home the majority decision win.

For Diaz its probable he’ll take some time off. After appeals for an immediate rematch were shot down, it was clear the promotion had other plans for McGregor. The Irish star is yet to defend the featherweight title, but that may not change anytime soon. UFC president Dana White revealed plans for a lightweight title clash featuring McGregor soon after UFC 202. Jose Aldo is probably not a big fan of this potential super fight.

The McGregor Show

After a brief detour, the Conor McGregor show is back on the road again. With the score evened against Nate Diaz, its back down the weight classes with a possible stop in the lightweight championship bout with Alvarez. UFC color commentator Joe Rogan made an interesting comment on social media the other day, claiming he’d love to see McGregor face Nick Diaz next.

Furthering that post during his recent podcast, Rogan said he literally wants to see that fight more than anything else in the world right now.
“This is what I want to see; I want to see Nick Diaz vs. Conor McGregor. I want to see that more than I want to see anything in life. More than I want to see the Aroura Borealis, more than I want to revisit the Milky Way–I want to see NICK DIAZ vs. CONOR McGREGOR.”

Thankfully it wasn’t only Rogan’s fantasies we heard about during this episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. The UFC commentator also gave a breakdown and recap of the UFC 202 main event. For casual fans that may be wondering why McGregor didn’t follow Diaz to the ground when he scored knockdowns, here’s Rogan’s analysis.

Not Going Down

“He was awesome. He’s a bad motherf*cker dude. Nobody gets a first round knockout against Nate Diaz, it’s going to be a war. He knew it, he had to be conservative. It was insane, like nothing ever. He doesn’t need to go down to the ground with (Nate). If you do that with a guy like Nate Diaz, he might not be hurt at all. Conor f*cked up Nate’s right leg with kicks.”

“He’s just getting chewed up with this left leg kick. It makes it super difficult to move. Conor just fought a smooth and smart game plan. He didn’t unload himself, in the first fight he did that and his gas tank emptied. He ran away, you can say that, but it’s OK.”

Running?

Nate Diaz and many of his fans reacted angrily to Conor McGregor ‘running away’ from exchanges during their fight. You could view this tactic two ways–As Diaz says ‘he was scared,’ or McGregor was simply avoiding Diaz’s biggest strength. Why trade with a guy against the fence when this is his best option in the striking exchanges?

UFC 202 will go down in the history books as one of the most exciting events of our generation. The main event rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz was a fitting end to the Las Vegas card that featured tons of great fights. Earlier Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson starched Glover Teixeira in the co-main event and Donald Cerrone put away Rick Story with conviction. The headlining bout was really the clincher for UFC 202.

Building on their UFC 196 classic, McGregor and Diaz had plenty of bad blood between them. The Stockton Jiu-Jitsu ace had submitted ‘The Notorious’ on just 11 days notice, and the Irishman was desperate for revenge. Furthering their feud was the story line between both stars and the promotion.Previously Diaz had complained about low pay for years, and McGregor had his own beef with the promotion after UFC 196.

‘They Are Trying To Get Me Out Of Here’

In typical Nate Diaz fashion, the Cesar Gracie product claimed the UFC was out to get him. According to him, the promotion was unhappy with his win over Conor McGregor. That was the reason for the immediate rematch being made just days after their first fight. Once McGregor had earned the majority decision win at UFC 202, Diaz turned the tables. Requesting a trilogy fight, the popular Stockton native was shot down by UFC president Dana White.

Eventually White revealed that McGregor had a choice between defending his featherweight belt or fighting Eddie Alvarez. Clearly no prizes for guessing which option the Irish star will go for. With ‘The Notorious’ now eyeing a lightweight title bout, Diaz stated he wouldn’t fight again until he’s booked for a third time against McGregor.

Timing

Following the UFC 202 main event, Diaz landed himself in potential trouble with USADA. After being filmed blazing up CBD oil at the presser, the possibility of a mandatory ban is very real for Diaz. Responding to being shut down on his hopes of a third fight, the ever popular 209 brawler took to Instagram. Here’s what Nate Diaz had to say to Conor McGregor:

By this time last fight I had already excepted rematch.. Rest up. I'm coming for you…..

If USADA eventually decides to ban him, perhaps the timing will work well.

In all honesty, there just might not be a better set of highlights out there than when the UFC releases its “Fight Motion” series.

This one from the recent UFC 202 card ranks among the best yet.

Along with featuring some incredible slo-mo footage of the Conor McGregor-Nate Diaz fight, we see some awesome exchanges between Raquel Pennington and Elizabeth Phillips, the brutality of Cody Garbrandt and the perfection of Mike Perry’s back-flip.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a few minutes.

Two days after last weekend’s (Sat., August 20, 2016) UFC 202 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, a UFC middleweight has issued an apology for racially insensitive marks he was seen and heard issuing during the UFC Fight Pass-aired portion of the UFC preliminary card.

Alex Nicholson, who recently picked up his first UFC win in July with a shocking come-from-behind knockout of favored Devin Clark at the scintillating UFC Fight Night 91 from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was caught on video muttering the unfortunate phrase, “He can’t even open his motherf**king eyes,” when his teammate Mike Perry was introduced for his own UFC debut against veteran Hyun Gyu Lim.

The comments were immediately flagged for their brash oversight of common respect, especially in a bout when Perry had already drawn heat for instigating at the official weigh-ins. He went on to win the bout with a brutal knockout, so it’s unfortunate that Nicholson had to mar his teammate’s big debut win with some in-the-moment comments like this.

For his part, he attempted to mend the fences this evening with an apology on Twitter (via Bloody Elbow):

It takes a big man to admit when he’s wrong and apologize, although it remains to be seen if the UFC will take any action against Nicholson for the bad publicity they certainly don’t need in this age of seemingly nonstop USADA drug test failures.

He’s only a two-fight veteran in the UFC, having lost his debut to a brutal jaw/neck crank submission from rising prospect Misha Cirkunov after he proposed to his girlfriend at the weigh-ins.

Following his win at middleweight, it’d be unfortunate to see a potentially solid career be hindered by such a foolish statement.

We’ll see if this apology is enough in the eyes of the new UFC ownership.
