Tony Ferguson may not have even a potential title unification bout with Conor McGregor on the horizon, but that won’t stop him from trolling the controversial Irish champion online.

Without the fight many fans are calling for, ‘El Cucuy’ is on the sidelines recovering from a recent elbow surgery awaiting McGregor’s prospective return, something that truly may never happen after a $100 million payday to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing ring this August.

Ferguson is going to do his best to get ‘The Notorious’ back in Octagon, however, posting a ranting tweet online that featured a GIF of Will Ferrell from “Old School,” in addition to a laughable misspelling of “potato”:

It’s definitely true that “El Cucuy” has spewed a lot of at-times incomprehensible trash talk in the last year or two, but his overall message that McGregor, who hasn’t defended the 155-pound title since winning it versus Eddie Alvarez in November 2016, should either get back in the Octagon or vacate the belt is one that’s been repeatedly voiced by growing numbers of fans. The promotion made his mind up for him in a similar situation by stripping the 145-pound title.

The Irish star may have some of the most jaw-dropping knockout power in MMA history, but his seeming unwillingness to defend a single title has placed his spot among the true pound-for-greats in MMA into serious question.

“El Cucuy” appears ready to climb into that rarified air, yet the fight he needs to do it may not be available anytime soon – no matter how many times he calls out “The Notorious” online.

In the hours following Joe Rogan suggesting that Dana White was actually talking to Floyd Mayweather about a comeback in the UFC, several fighters threw their name into the hat for what predictably perceived would be an easy – and massive – payday in the Octagon.

One of the biggest names to do just that was UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, who said he would give up 20 pounds to meet ‘Money’ in mixed martial arts. Mayweather denied the rumor shortly thereafter, however, making it seem certain he would not fight in the UFC, which was what more expected would actually happen than him risking his legacy and undefeated record to end his latest retirement.

But “Mighty Mouse” isn’t giving up on the bout, as he revealed to TMZ Sports (via MMA Mania) that he would fight Mayweather without one of his go-to skillsets of grappling, which he has used to become arguably the flashiest submission artist in the UFC following his suplex-to-armbar stoppage of Ray Borg:

“I think it would go very well for me, obviously. I’m very well-rounded. It’s mixed martial arts. I would even do a handicap. I won’t even grapple with him. I won’t even go to the ground at all. I’ll get him in the clinch, bang up, hit him in the liver, kick him in the liver, take out his legs and work him.”

With essentially two-thirds of his all-around game rendered useless, Johnson still isn’t scared of what Mayweather would bring to the cage. The top pound-for-pound fighter in all of MMA went into detail about how he would beat up “Money” if he decided to clinch like he does in boxing:

“100 percent [I would win],” said Johnson. “Yeah, of course. You have the clinch, there’s kicks, there’s elbows, it’s mixed martial arts. I come from one of the great coaches – Matt Hume, Brad Kertson – and my skill set is well-rounded.

“I’d probably get after that liver. Have to get after that liver. Beat him up in the Muay Thai clinch because he likes to clinch a lot. You see it in his boxing, when he clinches, once we initiate that clinch, I’m gonna throw a knee right to his liver.”

Finally, Johnson sold the bout hard, challenging the legend to beat up the smallest fighter in the UFC:

“Floyd, come over here and beat up the smallest guy in the UFC,” said Johnson. “Come try your hand, try to beat up the smallest guy.”

‘Mighty Mouse’ seems to be campaigning quite hard for a farcical bout with Mayweather, a true testament to the sad state of fighter pay and treatment in the UFC if the most dominant athlete has to essentially beg for the huge payday of fighting a retired boxing great because he can’t get a big fight in MMA.

Johnson obviously saw how much Conor McGregor made to meet Mayweather this August, but ‘Mighty Mouse’ simply isn’t on the Irish star’s level in terms of pay-per-views – quite the opposite is true. Either way, he seems to want the Mayweather match-up rather feverishly, but for our sakes, let’s hope no one gets it.

AKA Coach Insists Khabib’s Weight Is Not An Issue

Top-ranked UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov has been on the sidelines for the entirety of 2017 dealing with the ill effects of an extremely botched weight cut heading into his scheduled interim title bout versus Tony Ferguson at March’s UFC 209.

After “The Eagle” was unable to show up for early weigh-ins due to him being in the hospital in Las Vegas, many pointed to his somewhat head-scratching clip where he was eating tiramisu for dessert days before he had to drop his usual large amount of weight to make the 155-pound championship limit. According to his head coach at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) Javier Mendez, far too much has been made of Nurmagomedov’s perceived inability to make weight.

Mendez told Submission Radio (quotes via MMA Fighting) that the situation became overblown because “El Cucuy” had poked fun of his weight cut at a pre-fight press conference:

“You know, the last time, people were making too much of his weight cut, talking about it was disastrous, he wasn’t gonna make weight, just because his opponent says he wasn’t gonna make weight and he made fun of it. He was on schedule to make weight, his body just failed on him,” Mendez said.

“It’s like, how many times do you see a fighter get ready for a fight and all of a sudden kidney stones or something happens to him? Look, it does have a lot to do with losing weight that causes these problems, but it wasn’t that he wasn’t gonna make weight, he was gonna make weight, he wasn’t over anything, he was just like where he normally is. And just the thing with Khabib is, he doesn’t like to say anything about it, and he still won’t say anything about it.”

As for the infamous tiramisu controversy, Mendez said that his pupil was simply with fighters who were out of camp at the time and did not eat the delicacy:

“And then there’s that tiramisu bulls**t. You know, he don’t eat that stuff, he never ate that stuff. He’s with a bunch of fighters that aren’t in camp and not fighting, so they’re not allowed to eat because he’s not allowed to eat? It’s like stupid, you know? Too much has been made up of something that wasn’t even there.”

Maybe it does amount to ‘bulls**t,’ but touting that you were enjoying a dessert the week you have to make a massive weight cut for the biggest fight of your life and then missing weight is an increasingly bad look for “The Eagle” any way you slice it, especially considering that he’s only fought twice since April 2014 due to never-ending injuries.

Regardless, Khabib will now move on to face touted striker Edson Barboza at December 30’s UFC 219 from Las Vegas. It’s a dangerous fight that he has to win to be further considered for a title bout in the UFC’s messiest class, and Mendez claims it only came about when Ferguson, who’s now supposedly looking out for the business side of MMA, wanted to wait for current champion Conor McGregor:

“Yeah, 100 percent true, they offered Tony. But listen, you know, Tony, when he was going for that gold, he was saying, ‘I’ll defend, I’ll do this, I’ll do that,’ but reality is, he’s the fighter but he’s got businessmen that manage him, and they’re doing a good job doing with that. And it comes down to, once you reach that mountain top, which Tony has, then it’s about making the wise choices that make the most sense.

“And let’s face it, a bout with Khabib versus a bout with Conor, which was what Dana was talking about, everybody was talking about, if you were in Tony’s shoes what would you do? You’re not just gonna fight anybody that comes up and whatever. No, he’s gonna try to get himself in that sweepstake situation with Conor, and you can’t blame him, I don’t blame him.”

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm can understand a fighter going into a bout as the underdog facing long odds against an unbeatable fighter. She’s been here before, and it turns out, she is back in this position.

Just a little over two years ago, Holm was given the chance to beat former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, who was undefeated at the time, at UFC 193.

At this point in time, Rousey was one of the biggest superstars the sport had ever seen and was a big favorite over Holm.

That all changed when Holm stunned the world by scoring one of the most legendary upsets in the history of the sport by head kicking Rousey out cold to win the title.

Holm is now scheduled to challenge UFC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg at UFC 219.

“I think there are similarities with the feeling of it, and just knowing that people are having a little bit of doubt,” Holm said Thursday on a UFC 219 media conference call (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “But I think that because I’ve done this more than once now, in boxing and it’s probably even more seen with Ronda, to be the underdog and come in — I think that people think, ‘Oh, OK, well Holly is capable of doing some of [these] things,’ so I feel like there’s more of curiosity behind it. Not necessarily just thinking I can’t do it, but kind of, ‘Hmm, I wonder if she’s going to do it this time.’”

Cyborg has long been considered the best 145-pound female fighter in the world. Holm, on the other hand, is a relative newbie to 145 pounds.

“It’s a little different with my diet for this fight. I’m really not having to watch too much of portions or anything like that,” Holm said. “I’m eating healthy because I want to have energy for training, but it’s kind of that, I don’t have any stress as far as the weight.

I just get to focus on my training and have energy for training, so that’s a little bit different than for 135. I have to be a little more careful with things for 135, so it’s been nice to not have that stress for this training camp, because this is such a big fight, I was able to just kinda put more of my focus on everything else.”

“I did keep a little bit more weight on for this fight, but I didn’t want to keep bad weight on either and feel sluggish,” Holm said. “And yes, I was doing a lot of strength training between my last fight and this fight, but over the last couple weeks I kinda shut that down. I feel like I had built my strength between (fights), and right now, going to do a hard weight training session right now is not going to make me any stronger in one week.

“So I do feel stronger, but with the strength workouts, I’ve kinda tried to keep it based on explosive strength workouts. I don’t really want to just get more muscle that’s harder to carry around. Muscle needs oxygen, and the more muscle you have, sometimes it takes a little bit more to carry around. I still want to feel light on my feet. I still want to have speed.”

UFC 219 is set to take place on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at 7 p.m. ET.

“I know that a lot people have said, ‘Oh, you should take her in late rounds,’ and you know what, I know she’s not used to the later rounds. That’s just a fact,” Holm said. “But I still know that she trains really hard, and that doesn’t mean that she’s going to not want to be there. I know that she’s still going to be fighting hard all the way through.

I expect her to be there and be aggressive and in my face for the full 25 minutes. So I don’t sit here and just think, ‘Oh, if I make it through two rounds, I’m just good to go.’ I’m ready for five rounds of hard fight.”

“It’d be awesome,” Holm said. “I’ve always said I want to do something that nobody else has done, and one of my biggest things coming to MMA from boxing was to be able to hold world titles in both boxing and MMA, because no male or female had done that yet.

And here we are, I was able to do that. And here I am, up against another opponent. To be able to get multiple world titles in MMA after boxing would be huge. Nobody’s done that before, so it’s a dream of mine to accomplish that.”
