UFC Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic may be preparing for his toughest test to date, as he’s set to take on red hot knockout artist Francis Ngannou in the main event of Jan. 20, 2017’s UFC 220 from Boston, Massachusetts.

Given Ngannou’s recent streak and brutal fight-ending power, Miocic, who’s won five-straight fights by way of T/KO, is actually the betting underdog, but it appears to be a role he’s embracing:

“I’m the underdog. What do you expect?” Miocic said at yesterday’s (Dec. 29, 2017) UFC 220 press conference. “That’s what the betting line says, right? But I’m used to it. I’m pretty much the underdog in all my fights. I don’t mind being the underdog, because I like shutting people up.

“People bet against me, and they lose a lot of money. I’ve had people come up to me and say, ‘Ugh,’ and (I say), ‘What’s wrong?’ (They say), ‘I lost a lot of money on you. I bet against you.’ I say, ‘Next time, you should bet for me.’ I’m used to it every fight.”

Over the last year or so, it seems as if the UFC has been grooming Ngannou as its next big star, and if the Cameroon native can score another highlight reel knockout and become the heavyweight champion, he could very well become the promotion’s next big thing. Miocic, however, is poised to not allow that to happen:

“I think everyone does, but it ain’t gonna happen, I can tell you that,” Miocic said. “He can do it to someone else, but it ain’t going to happen to me.

“Listen, man. He knocked out Overeem pretty good. Good for him. Great knockout. But it ain’t going to happen when we fight on January 20th. Sorry, but it’s not going to happen. I’m not going to put myself in that position. I’m not going to put my head in the lane, either.”

Who do you expect to come out on top next month?

Daniel Cormier Reveals How He’ll Remove ‘Stench’ Of Jon Jones Loss

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is preparing to defend his light heavyweight title against surging knockout artist Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event of UFC 220 on Jan. 20, 2017 in Boston, Massachusetts. UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is preparing to defend his light heavyweight title against surging knockout artist Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event of UFC 220 on Jan. 20, 2017 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Ahead of this defense, “DC” is in a unique position for a champion given the fact that he’s coming off of a brutal TKO loss to Jon Jones this past July. However, it was revealed after the fight that Jones failed yet another drug test and he was then stripped of the title, which led the UFC to once again crown Cormier the undisputed champion.

In regards to that situation, Cormier doesn’t shy away from what happened that night in California, although he says that the only thing he can do is ‘go back to work’:

“When you guys ask me these questions, it’s hard for me to not be who I am,” Cormier said yesterday at a UFC 220 press conference in Las Vegas. “I always say July 29th I was in the octagon, I know what happened, (and) I don’t hide from the result. I know what happened, and I lost the fight. That’s my reality. But what do I do when I lose a fight? What do I do when I’ve had anything bad happen to me? I get up, I dust myself off, and I go back to work. That’s all I can do. …

And because the memory of his rematch with Jones stays put in his mind, Cormier admits that there’s a ‘stench’ on him from a bad performance, and that there’s only one way he can rid himself of that:

“I feel like after the fight, there’s a stench, a stink on me from just a bad fight, a bad build-up, a bad result, a bad everything. I have to right that by not only beating Volkan Oezdemir, but really dominating him and smashing him. I’m going to smash him on January 20th. That’s the only way I can feel better being the competitor that I am.”

Do you expect Cormier to bounce back next month, or will Oezdemir continue his rise up the light heavyweight ranks?

Top light heavyweight Volkan Oezdemir may be heading into the biggest bout of his life when he meets current champion Daniel Cormier at January 20’s UFC 220, but he’ll apparently still be dealing with a felony charge when he does.

Today, public records acquired via MMA Fighting revealed that the Stae of Florida was moving ahead with a felony charge against Oezdemir, with a court appearance apparently having been set. Oezdemir’s second-degree felony charge of aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability has been moved down to third-degree felony battery causing great bodily harm.

The rising light heavyweight was originally charged with battery in November. Records stated that judge Barbara R. Duffy would preside over his arraignment hearing in the Broward County Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court on January 9, 2018. Records also showed that state attorney Michael J. Satz had filed the new, lowered charge on December 15, and Duffy had issued a no-bond arrest warrant for Oezdemir, which will only come into play if the Swiss knockout slugger fails to appear in court.

Oezdemir’s trouble dates back to an alegged August 12th incident where he supposedly struck and knocked out Florida man Kevin Cohen for 14 minutes. Cohen also told police he was treated for symptoms of concussion and required staples for multiple lacerations. The alleged incident took place at a bar called Capone’s, where Cohen said he walked outside of after hearing his friend had been knocked out. When he asked who did, according to him, Oezdemir then knocked him out.

Although the charge he’s facing carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail, Oezdemir and his attorney Bruce Zimet have insisted he was merely acting in self-defense. Both Zimet and the UFC did not respond to inquiries from MMA Fighting.

Heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis is currently preparing for a bout against Marcin Tybura at UFC Fight Night 126 on Feb. 18 in Austin, Texas, but he’s also keeping a close eye on the upcoming heavyweight title bout between champion Stipe Miocic and red hot knockout artist Francis Ngannou, which is set to take place at UFC 220 on Jan. 20 in Boston.

While Ngannou has been rising through the ranks with a string of brutal knockout victories, Lewis has recently been dealing with injuries, but he feels as if the UFC needs to show him some love as well:

“I just think it’s racist, man,” joked Lewis (18-5 MMA, 9-3 UFC) in an interview with MMAjunkie.” “I’m an American black guy. He’s from France. They’ve got to step their game up. You’ve got to show me some love. I’ve been through more than he has.”

As far as his future goes, Lewis is planning to get through Tybura before he sets his sights on the heavyweight crown. And when he does receive a title shot, he’s hoping it comes against Ngannou:

“I believe it’s going to be a good fight,” Lewis said. “Stipe has been rocked before; Francis, he hasn’t really been touched before, so it’s going to be an interesting matchup. But hopefully Francis wins, and then I’m going to come in line and I’m going to take Francis out.

“That’s the fight I want after this fight (against Tybura). Hopefully, everything goes good, and that’s the fight I want.”

Do you expect “The Predator” to get by Miocic next month?
